The graphics in this game, WOW. Can't imagine the amount of effort it took for all those frames of animation. Aside from the graphics, the gameplay is really interesting, some bosses are really good, and others are kinda bad, mostly from the airplane segments. The run-n-gun segments are kinda boring on repeat playthroughs but they are ok.
The Moldenhauer's demanded excellence from themselves when painstakingly creating the game's iconic, vibrant art, so it's only fair that they demand some excellence from you the player in taking down these grueling bosses. The game is a thrill to play, my only complaint is how frustrating it can be to die to an unlucky nigh un-dodge able pattern.
Very late to this game and was always slightly intimidated by the difficulty. But man what a game, it needs not be said that the visuals are top tier, the creativity of the bosses is incredible, but the stand out for me was that the gameplay was tight as hell. No filler whatsoever. I haven’t felt such a feeling of triumph since beating the radiance in hollow knight.

Cuphead's hand-drawn animations and watercolor set pieces may have been influential for their time, but I'd need to research games from a few years after to be certain. What I do know is that Cuphead's run(?)-and-gun fights and platforming are good, but not new or outstanding.
Cuphead's effort is spent on the visual presentation of its bosses and environments, but not the feeling or experience of play. The game almost feels muted without the visual presentation to fill in how flat it is. Bosses are also very safe in their design. It's no coincidence that the bosses considered to be the hardest are those that break from the formula of eclectic projectile dodging that gets easier yet more visually bombastic as the fight goes on.
