Really neat little game, close to obra dinn but much more contained.
Art style is probably not for everybody, and a couple mysteries are a little too complicated you may end up brute forcing a little.

DLC was good too, first one pretty tough, second one with a little gimmick to add some layering

Pep's Detective Deep Dive - Game 6
This was... something different. Rather than the usual "investigating a murder after the fact" murder mystery, Case Of The Golden Idol presents a static scene to you, and it's up to you to point-and-click your way to the truth of what exactly is going on in the story.

Clicking highlighted areas of interest presents you with a series of words, and you use these words to fill in the gaps of an incomplete "scroll", giving you the story. Seems simple at first, but as the game progresses it can get fiendishly difficult as the story spirals and some parts left me genuinely stumped. If you're really struggling there's a hint system available, but I never used it.

The only real thing stopping me from giving this a higher mark is that the story kind of fizzles out by the end, and I was left slightly let down by it. However, there's a 1970s-set sequel on the way so I'll be looking into that.

An interesting concept done very well, I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a different kind of mystery game.

Played on Steam Deck. Cool idea, but a bit tedious trying to figure out the exact way the game wants you to fill in the words.

Really enjoyable detective game, with a story that slowly pieces itself together. Difficulty was pretty manageable for me for the most part, although I did admittedly struggle quite a bit on the last few cases, and ESPECIALLY on some of the DLC cases. I would still strongly recommend playing the DLCs, as they round out the main story in a really nice way.

Excellent mystery solving game. A bit futzy at times but worth it

I voted for Lazarus Herst. What's your excuse?

Wow! I honestly did not expect to like this game this much. I am a fan of games like Return of Obra Dinn, but initially found the artstyle a bit too harsh for my tastes, and the more-traditional point and click style of interaction was also not that appealing to me.

I have to say I was wrong to assume the game was boring - it is a nicely crafted detective adventure that takes you through a chronological journey that slowly, but surely becomes more and more evil. Impressive and very fun!

o final é bem cansativo, mas em geral é um obra dinn like bem gostosinho

nice I like clicking on things to find out about secret societies

Really pleasant solving game with a compelling artstyle.

Defo going to check out the DLC!

a bit too easy to brute force solutions sometimes, but very saisfying and fun to solve the dioramas on your own. Not quite Obra Dinn levels of satisfaction and quite a bit different in how it works, actually, but a very good game, nonetheless.

Some pretty puzzling puzzles. Really got my noodle working. There's some deduction and narrative that I definitely wasn't picking up on as I went along but process of elimination got me there at that point.

A decent detective game in a style I'd like to see more, however the story was uninteresting and the quality of each case varies wildly.

the core gameplay isn’t particularly distinct from your run-of-the-mill point-and-click mystery game and does become tedious when playing for awhile. however, the story is super compelling and well-constructed without taking itself too seriously—a whimsical exploration of aristocratic control, desire, paranoia, and ruthlessness borne out by the enigmatic power of the titular idol. there was an incredible moment of clarity between the final level and epilogue that will stay with me long-term. loved the grimey and exaggerated aesthetic too

I completed it together with my girlfriend, and perhaps the best recommendation is that she was very engaged in solving the puzzles. Some were (in my opinion) damn difficult, but never to the point of being annoying. If someone is missing a game like Return of the Obra Dinn, I think they won't be disappointed by choosing this one.

Wow, another special game. Absolutely loved this. Aside from a few harsh endgame spikes in the DLC, the way this detective game is paced and weaves in knowledge you gain as you go through cases is wonderful. A must play.

Complexity of puzzles became overwhelming in the last few cases. The interface isn’t well adapted to the Switch either.

Lazarus Herst? More like Lazarus worst

Great artistic design a d also gameplay; simple but very challenging. I need more like this

The DLC is still kicking my ass, but by the time I rolled credit on the main game, it got me feeling proud of myself and kept making me think about its world.

Short game with a interwoven and engaging thread throughout revolving around the titular golden idol. Engages with a lot of themes and has good world building around it - expanded in the DLCs.

Visually it's kind of ugly - but in a sort of detailed way that works, one of the central premises is the greed and ambitions of people driving them to heinous lengths, so like maybe that's an intentional choice.

Gameplay is fun, though easily subject to brute forcing if you get stuck - though I guarantee anyone playing will have a moment where the solution (or indeed twists in the plot) will click and you'll feel like Neo seeing the code of the matrix - I honestly wish one could bottle that feeling and sell it. It's likened to the Obra Dinn, which to my understanding (having not played) has a narrative reason for your investigation, this does not - you're very much an outside perspective.

Ultimately, the game (and it's DLCs) provide a short but engaging narrative journey. It doesn't overstay it's welcome and I look forward to future work by these devs.

Really pleasant solving game with a compelling artstyle.

Defo going to check out the DLC!

Playtime: 6-7 hours. %100.

A refreshing murder-mystery with a multi-layered story that touches family drama, colonial exoticism, 18th century politics and more. I especailly liked how the characters switch allegiances, evolve, or reappear throughout, kinda like a classical novel. I liked it a lot! Similar to Obra Dinn but I liked this more.

Recommended for adventure fans and anyone who is simply fed up with triple A gaming.

A really cool spin on what could be misconstrued as just a typical point-and-click mystery game. It was pretty well-balanced for me too, where no puzzle felt like it took too long or was too difficult - I was surprised at how in-depth some of the mysteries went, and the connections you had to make.
The DLC also helped to expand on the base game and round everything off, so I'm glad I didn't have to wait for those to release! The music and artwork all felt consistent and thought out, and I'm glad there was an option in the settings to toggle an indication for what was interactable, as I am not interested in wasting my time pixel hunting.

I wish I was good enough at puzzle games to properly appreciate how great this game is

Final Grade: A

Not quite obra dinn but scratched the itch

I'm delighted to see more deductive reasoning/"Obra Dinn-likes"--although in some ways it felt like a step back from Obra Dinn's ingenious logbook form of deduction. Instead, Golden Idol takes a "mad lib" approach: so as a necessity the game must rely on directly giving words to bank for solutions and explicitly providing information (for example, telling me directly a sword is clean or a latch is broken in tool tips) instead of allowing me to deduce.

Still, this allows for a wider variety of mysteries with more complicated stories playing out over many years. You'll come to recognize the same characters weaving in and out of the story and your general knowledge of the secrets of this world evolve alongside it (but not entirely paying off for me--I guessed the major twist early on). Golden Idol makes it easy to hop back to earlier scenarios to refresh your memory like you're Columbo coming back for "just one more thing"--although I couldn't always shake the feeling I was cheating when I did this.

I love games that compel me to pull out a notebook and start writing things down, which I was definitely doing here--although due to the heightened complexity of the type of mystery you're trying to solve, at times it felt more like rote information gathering, especially whenever the game would dump a pile of clues on my head. On that note, I do wish the game had let the player log a personal clue bank, like notes or diagrams that the player thought was valuable information.

The DLC saw a marked visual and musical upgrade, an improvement I'm excited to see Color Gray Games taking into their sequel, The Rise of the Golden Idol.
