The RPG aspects are about as deep as a Cocomelon video, but it satisfies the urge to make up dumb shit for the fun of it.
Why yes, my noble teammate "Lightning McQueen vomiting to death", we do in fact have to stop Dark Lord CD-i Ganon.

Loses a full point solely for not allowing you to control your other party members, severely limiting player agency in a game already lacking in real strategic decisions, but is otherwise a hilarious and memorable romp taking Tomodachi Life's concept of putting whoever you want into these ridiculous scenarios and applying it to my favorite genre, the JRPG.
It also may seem like a minor addition, but the expanded Mii maker drastically increased my enjoyment of the game. Being able to create more accurate-looking versions of the characters you want to implement into the story helps a ton with immersion, or at the very least makes the game as immersive as a fantasy RPG starring the Miis can be.

I think this game is a fairly good game. It's one I don't see myself coming back to (although I did play it TWICE, once on the 3DS and once on the Switch). I think the allure of it was quite honestly what Tomodachi Life was all about too, which is putting in people you know into the game as characters and seeing how they interact. The interactions in this game compared to Tomodachi Life however are very basic, so this ends up being a very status quo RPG with a few changes to the basic formula/mechanics of the genre.
It took a long time to beat, and despite some of the levels feeling a little boring, I had a lot of fun playing through! I think the dialogue and character interactions are so cute, and I enjoyed being able to make my own Miis, since I either added myself, friends, family, my own characters, or just the Miis I'd find online. In my opinion, Miitopia is worth the money because it feels like a long-ish game, yet fun game. To be fair though, I wanted to complete every single path of all the levels so maybe it felt long to me. There's also post-game content, which is nice. The music is quite groovy as well.
I played the 3DS version first when it was released and I had a great time with it BUT when I finished the game I didnt feel like investing my time in the game anymore, because I could just play tomodachi life if I wanted my OC to do stuff together, but now with Miitopia switch (thanks god for the best mii maker ever) I can make my OTP do stuff together without looking like abomination with the OG mii maker.
So yeah, this is the superior version.

I played the original 3DS version to death (quite literally, my copy of it doesn't even work anymore) and I've played the Switch version to death as well. This is one of the only ports of a game where I can without a doubt say it's better than the original in every way. Anyway, Miitopia is a very simple RPG designed around inserting your Miis into the story. It's kind of like a DND campaign in some way. The Mii customization is the best we have ever seen and it's a crime that it's not the default Mii maker. I don't think a blind playthrough is necessary since the enjoyment comes from putting your Miis in silly situations, but anyone interested should definitely play the demo in the E-Shop. It's a section from the first area in the game and is a great introduction to what the game is like.
The story and gameplay is very simple and not all that great. But the ability to put any character or person into it is what makes this game special. I spent more time creating Miis with the makeup feature than actually playing lol. The game just gets better the further you get, so I'm glad I finished it.
You’ll get as much out of this as you put in. The first time I played it, my party members were my fursona, Kazuma Kiryu, Dr Nefarious and Gordon Ramsey, and I lost interest so fast. Second time around, I used all my OCs, and suddenly I was invested like nothing else.
It’s a fairly hands-off experience that I wish had more unique scenarios, but there are few things that have gotten me to care more about a video game than building up my OCs to be badass fighters, hanging out with them and watching them do silly things together, only to see them kidnapped and have to go rescue them.
Screw Tomodachi Life.
