Bought this game because manchildren were getting mad over their underage waifu or something, as is the case with gamers after like 2009. Long story short people do not know what censorship is and no actual content was removed. Mike Z, the director for a long time, was ousted (simplest way to put it) for... misconduct a few years ago. Do not take people who actually think a mild change in color to a piece of clothing on one character and removing some unnecessary story panels (like idk, 2 out of the 20 billion in this game) is removing content. The game is literally the same and I can guarantee you none of these people complaining would even notice if it wasn't explicitly announced.
I find it difficult to find many faults in Skullgirls. The movement is smooth as butter, the art is unique and appealing, the music is great, and it has this charm to it that no other game has. This game is like a high quality dish served with caviar. Combos feel limitless in a way that few fighting games have without being broke as shit (looking at you, Street Fighter Alpha 2...)
I think the only problem I could find is that the boss character at the end of the story and arcade modes is like the antithesis of what the game is. You basically have to play the game completely differently due to how that fight works, which I'm not really a fan of in fighting games.
All of the things that people complain about fighting games not having, is present in Skullgirls. A thorough tutorial, a robust story mode for all of the characters, long term support, and some of the BEST rollback netcode in the genre. I fail to find any real issues with the actual game, which is what you should be reviewing a game for anyway.

The recent controversy that has surrounded this game has conflicting opinions from different sides. On one hand, firing the original developers and removing content people paid for (the art book) is incredibly stupid. On the other hand however, censoring sexualisation of a 16 year old? I get why that had to be done as I didn't like it myself.
On the topic of Filia's censorship however, there is one thing I don't quite understand: what's the point in censoring story illustrations when 1) her figure is still curvaceous in said illustrations and 2) her sprite animations still contain pantie flashes, etc. I feel like at the beginning they should have made Filia a university student or not sexualise her at all.
In summary, this entire controversy is a mess.

I'm not a fighting game expert, and I'm pretty bad at them, but this game has hooked me. I think one major plus that has gotten me to stick with this game is the extensive but easy-to-grasp tutorials that the game provides. Though I'm still not at the level I want to be, I've made major steps, and my progress has been noticeable and meaningful.
The biggest reason I have stuck with the game has to be its style. The character designs are fantastic (though not always appropriate), and the animations are amazing. I think the big band, jazzy, music does a lot to help push the old movie style that permeates a lot of the game, including the supers, which are called "Blockbusters".
I'd highly recommend checking this game out. It's a spectacular time. (I play Peacock, by the way.)

Oh boy... this game was excellent in its day, I followed along with it from the OG publisher to the Kickstarter days.
it was one of the best arcade fighters for a WHILE.
BUT
DO NOT PLAY IN ITS CURRENT STATE.
current owners have fired all the original devs and deleted content people paid for because it was deemed offensive.
I don't care what your opinion of 'offensive' material is, you don't get to remove content people paid for.

Skullgirls is a fairly endearing if a bit risque fighting game that served to set the example that more than one FG can use rollback netcode to immense success, while oozing pure style and fluidity. It was also one of the earlier examples of an actually good in-game tutorial and walkthrough, making it by far one of the best on-boarders to the genre short of getting a veteran to coach you personally.
The music is lovely and the stage selection while literally just a flat line in physicality offers a lot of nice variety in tone and mood, preventing sessions from feeling stale so much; not to mention the countless character-on-character specific battle intro/outros, you can tell so much care went into this despite what's apparently pretty awful working environ- wait, I'm getting something...
Oh noeys my broskis, sisterinos and they/themmings, they're removing content from a game I haven't booted up in 6 years!
W-what content? U-um, yknow, stuff like uh..
sexual comments involving minors, allegorical nazi imagery, a few pantyshots, the announcer voiced by the creepy ass ex-CEO(/director?)..
This level of censorship is proof western civilization can only dream of creating masterworks such as Bakemonogatari.
Just remember to fight that good fight and not buy Skullgirls for the third time, /a/lrighty?
lmfao get real. Favorite piece from the OST.

This is the game that properly got me into fighting games. I will forever love it for that. Even though I'm still not any good lmao. Love the art style, art deco goes crazy. Music is fantastic. Combat is so kinetic, and all the characters are super unique. Most characters have super big bazongas (even Beowulf) so take that as you will. Overall it's a great package. 👍👍👍
