The difficulty thing is actually only in the overseas release, not only did they change the difficulty names so that the "Normal" difficulty would be the JP version's cheat code-only crazy hard mode, but they made it so "Children" mode (actually "Normal") would lock you out of the ending, which it didn't in the OG release.
