Tonally this has been my favourite in the series so far, I just really enjoyed these characters and many of the comedic moments. I feel like I'll actually remember character names, which I can't say about many from Final Fantasy 1-4.

On top of that, there's a more developed story and the now iconic job system. Overall, this is really fantastic game and pretty close to 5/5 from me.

I also enjoyed the step up in difficulty here, with Gil Turtle, Omega, and Shinryu being more challenging than anything thus far.

To put it simply, this is incredible and essential.

This is my second attempt at playing this game, but unfortunately I'm just not connecting with it. The plot doesn't seem to be going anywhere interesting, which is likely down to my disinterest in the characters.

Definitely my least favourite in the series so far.

Like many others, I picked this up because I love the Souls games. I've never played Armored Core before as aside from Mechagodzilla, I don't care for mechs at all.

Aside from a pretty bland story, I enjoyed my time with this game and will likely revisit it in the future. It's got some great moments of spectacle, excellent customisation options and awesome boss fights that are challenging and exciting to overcome.

FromSoftware have to be the most consistent developer in the world right now, I can't wait for whatever they make next.

Maybe VI is a greater boundary pushing piece of art, and VII has those hugely iconic moments that stand out in the memory, but for me, IX is the most consistently enjoyable game in the series so far.

I'd also say this is the most 'fantasy' of all the Final Fantasy games, it has a fairy-tale adventuring quality to it, with a vibrancy to the presentation and an endearing tone and cast of characters.

Speaking of characters, it was refreshing to have a main protagonist who was immediately likeable, lively and charismatic, rather than Squall and Cloud who are both moody sullen teenagers. Zidane is crucial in establishing the tone of this game early, as well as Vivi and Steiner, who I would rank first and second on my list of character FF characters overall.

If you've finished this without a guide, I don't believe you.

Before Lies of P, I'd never finished any 'Soulslike' game before, they've always seemed like cheap imitations to me and were simply not fun to play.

This is one of the best games of 2023 and easily the best Souls inspired title that I've played.

2023

A totally fine game, but I can only get so enthusiastic about yearly releases that have small changes. Glad to have gotten it for free through PS Plus at least!
