This game is fantastic, and I don't even like puzzle games! I just think that fusing two genres is such a cool thing to do. But, it isn't 100% smooth. Mario's jump height just feels so wrong. I always feel like I should be able to make jumps that I can't and I just get hit instead.

The Sky Islands are a bad first impression. In the first game, The Great Plaetau felt as big as Hyrule Fields from Ocarina because of your lack of limitations. The Sky Islands halt you. If you take the wrong path, then you'll be led to a dead end. It took me hours just to find the fuse shrine because of how much more restrictive it felt. At the end of the day, it's a sequel to BOTW (even if it's a bit overpriced).

A very janky masterpiece. The Pikmin ai bogs it down a bit, but this series struck gold right out the gate. Having 30 days to collect 30 ship parts leads to a time limit system that is somehow both manageable and insanely stressful, and it works perfectly. Once you know how everything works, it's an endlessly replayable game. Especially when you know about the egg that gives you 100 free Pikmin :)

If this game was a person, they'd lull you into a false sense of security by being your friend and then beat you up for no reason.

Ah yes, the many choices that are presented in an rpg. For example, should I use Geno Flash or should I have mercy?

For a baby's first Metroidvania, it's pretty good. Your current objective is catalouged in a quest log, most quests have a marker on your map telling you exactly where you need to go, abilities are never too far from where you need to use them, and there's even an "everything's falling apart" escape sequence at the very end. Also, DISNEY KNOWS WHAT AMONG US IS!

This game does this really annoying thing where you still have to sit through dialouge when restarting a battle even if you selected the restart & skip cutscenes option. Oh, you want the positives? I mean, it's advance wars. I haven't seen anyone fuck that up.

This game is so rough. Enemies will constantly pop out at you giving you no time to react, there are lives for whatever reason. Yeah, lives. In a Metroidvania. Puzzles that make me activley mad when figuring out the solution. And worst of all, it's prone to crashing. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal. I could just play up to that point. It would be annoying but not memorable enough to put into a review, but I just can't do it. I don't want to play this game for longer than I need to, so I just won't play it at all.

2023

This game should be great. It looks amazing and has very interesting mechanics, but the camera is just awful. I know that it seems unlikely that one element can make a game bad, but Blanc's camera just makes for an unfun experience. Combined with the fact that this game drops frames like they're going out of style, I just can't recommend this game to anyone. There's nothing that you can get out of this game that you can't get out of a cute animals video.

One aspect of Metroidvanias that I feel most people don't talk about is the boss fights. In these types of games, bosses are very techinical in a dodge into attack kind of way. Shantae is an interesting case because some bosses (like the squid barron) follow this rule. You have to learn what they do and counter, however other bosses (like the hypno barron) adopt a far less interesting stand there and hit the attack button while occasionally moving around strategy. Also, I'm 74% certain that they just forgot to put a boss in here. They set up the Ammo Barron for a boss fight the best out of all the barrons and then you just... don't fight him.

2022

This game is so cozy. You won't even notice that you're struggling to understand the puzzles because of the rich atmosphere this game has. Though that ties in to a problem: You sometimes won't really know what the puzzle even is. This game just throws you into things and tells you to find the directions yourself.

Even if the PS5 is your first console, it's obvious how much love for PlayStation's past was poured into this game

This game is really in touch with the 'friendly neighborhood' part of spider-man

Somehow, the first game looks primitive in comparison to this.

We can skip the game awards this year. nothing could possibly top this game
