私が言いたいことは以下の文言に集約される。
「全力でゲームを作る気がないならゲーム制作なんてするな」という事だ。トライエースには、日本の、世界の、ゲーム業界の為にも早急に、可及的速やかに消滅して頂きたい。

>It's another "it's bad because it's not exactly like VP1" episode

By that argument, it's not "better because it's different from VP1".
I'm simply saying that shit is shit.

Was Exist Archive a masterpiece?
Yeah, tri-Ace has made another shitty game.

It's been 15 years since VP2 was released, and yet there hasn't been a remake or even a port for other consoles.
Whhhhhhhy?
Even though VP1 was ported to iOS?
Why? Why?

Nothing you said has anything to do with my comment, or even with VP2's quality.

Quality, huh?
What was so high quality about VP2?
The storyline? When the scenario writer was outsourced? In fact, it's so shitty that no one is praising it. It's obvious that tri-Ace didn't want to do this from the start.

And the battle system?
What kind of high quality is a degraded version of VP1's combat?
Don't you think tri-Ace and Square Enix, the distributor, have the answer?
If it really was a high quality game that everyone could appreciate, wouldn't there be a port or remake?
Most importantly, the majority of VP fans in Japan, the main customer base, have identified VP2 as a shitty game. My personal opinion is the same.
"VP2はクソゲーだ"。

VP is dead with this fucking VP2.

>>"What was so high quality about VP2?"

The whole thing?

>>"The storyline? When the scenario writer was outsourced?"

It's still a great take on the world of Valkyrie Profile through the eyes of parties aligned with mortals, as opposed to Lenneth's point of view in the first game.

>>"It's obvious that tri-Ace didn't want to do this from the start."

I think it's pretty clear from the little post-credits cutscene at the end of VP1 that they always intended to do a sequel.

>>"What kind of high quality is a degraded version of VP1's combat?"

VP2's combat is just as good, if not better than VP1's. The greatest change was the 3D aspect, requiring more finesse from players to safely take down enemies. It's a lot better balanced too, especially without the Guts + Auto-Item combo, and PWS can be skipped.

>>"If it really was a high quality game that everyone could appreciate, wouldn't there be a port or remake?"

There is absolutely no correlation between a quality of a game and whether or not it gets ports or remakes. It has everything to do with how much money a company thinks they can make from it, and very niche games aren't very lucrative. Xenogears and Vagrant Story are both great games that haven't gotten any ports or remakes, and then we have mediocre games like Persona 3 that got not one, but TWO enhanced ports. And that's just JRPGs. Don't get me started with arcade games.

VP2 also apparently got reprinted as an "Ultimate Hits" game alongside games like FFX and FFXII, so Sony, tri-ace, and Square Enix were clearly proud of the game.

I'll skip the quotes because they're too cumbersome.

I mean from the beginning, in the VP2 planning phase. It was a question of staffing.
It was mainly a question of who was going to be in charge of the scenario.
And the cutscenes in the credits of VP1 are just an afterthought.
In an interview for the strategy book, Masaki Norimoto confessed that he had no idea about VP2.
When he made VP1, he made that A-end without thinking about the future.
Masaki Norimoto threw the development of VP2 to an external company.
There's nothing to praise about that scenario, especially the second half of the storyline.
No one is praising it either. There are 400,000 people who bought VP2 in Japan, and there are a few who praise the battle system. But no one is praising the scenario. Edgeworks, the company that wrote the scenario for VP2, is famous for the fact that all the games they work on are shit.

The combat part.... It's not enough to make it complicated, it's a failure when you make the player feel like it's too much work. Yeah, but I'll admit that it wasn't as shitty as the scenario.
It's a game company that's good at making elaborate battle systems, even if they are rotten. tri-Ace is.
My anger is mainly against the scenario, so I don't have a strong opinion about the combat system.

It is the customer who decides if the quality is good or not. 400,000 people in the Japanese market created by VP1.
The 400,000 people who bought VP2 defined VP2 as a クソゲー and sold it to second hand shops.

"niche games"?
A game that sells 400,000 copies is not a "niche game".
This is remarkable considering that in 2006 the Japanese games market was going downhill.
This is proof of the high regard in which VP1 was held.

Xenogears and Vagrant Story have been ported to the PS Archive.
Yeah, but I'll add that there are some technical issues with porting.
A lot of people are still waiting for Ace Combat 4/5/0 to be remastered. Not like VP2.

It's your subjective opinion that Persona 3 is a mediocre game.
It's not a masterpiece, but it's a good game. In Japan. I don't know how it is in other countries.
Regardless of your subjectivity, fans of the Persona series have embraced 3 both qualitatively and formally.
That's why the brushed-up Persona 4 and Persona 5 were released.
It's as misguided as saying in 2021 that Dragon Quest 1, released in 1986, is mediocre.
For its time, Persona 3 was a well-made game. For those who first played Persona 4 or Persona 5, it's probably mediocre.
You have to look at the assumptions and the zeitgeist to get an unbiased perspective.
However, VP2 had a shitty rating when it was released and still does. It's an eternal クソゲー.

Ultimate Hits? Ah, you mean the rhetoric of stock clearance.
No one in Japan thinks it's a reprint. Besides, it's just a cheap version, to prevent second-hand goods.

Pride? Not a debt?
Square-Enix sees tri-Ace, including VP2, as a tool or a liability.
That's my guess. But I think I'm right.

Your opinion that VP2 is a masterpiece is a personal opinion. But I admit it.
I'm not going to change my opinion, though.
No amount of shouting from you is going to change the objective fact that VP2 is a クソゲー.
Just ask any Japanese gamer in Japanese. Most of them will tell you that VP2 is a クソゲー.
Again, I'm not going to deny that VP2 is a great game for you.

If you try to ruin the comment section again, I'll block you.
I don't want to get involved with people who are going to fight with Blah_Blee san's place too.

The time that should have been spent playing the game or writing a new review has been consumed by this fucking unimportant...

Not to be insulting anything, but what Japanese people (or any people) allegedly think of Valkyrie Profile 2 (or any other game) is completely irrelevant to the game's actual quality. Plenty of mediocre games have received glowing reception, and plenty of wonderful games have received poor (or even little) reception.

And there's no such thing as a truly unbiased perspective of a game; the most important factor of a game's rating is my personal experience with it, and that is inherently biased.

So while I respect your opinion about VP2, I don't really understand basing it around extraneous circumstances like whether or not is has a remaster, or what other people think about it.

Mudkipz is right, Shadow Tower scores taught me reception is totally irrelevant

Woah buddy... calm down

based game actually

Oh dear. This is not your notepad.
It's a pain in the ass and I won't even comment back.
I'd rather play the game I'm playing or write a review if I had the time.
And it's really tiring to write responses in English. It's not my first language. Besides, there's no rule that says you can only use English on this site.
So I'm going to put all the reviews above in Japanese, with some changes.
In addition, I will not use anything other than Japanese on this page from now on.
All comments and replies will be in Japanese.
I'm not trying to persuade you in the slightest.
I'm just saying that a クソゲー is a クソゲー.

i just wanted to say I really enjoy reading your reviews; even though so many of us are into japanese gaming, it's hard for us to get an idea what the fanbases and critical reception for games is like in japan. your reviews do a great job illustrating how these games are perceived from a japanese perspective, which is especially important for rpgs given how different the games can be when they release in the west. it sucks that some people choose to pick fights over this, but i hope you keep writing new reviews!

Please keep doing your reviews for games that have an English release or an English fan translation. I like reading your reviews of Japanese games because you are well informed, a taste that i mostly agree with, and have a lot interesting background information like interviews in magazines. You don't have to comment in English in comment sections but the English reviews i really adore. It would be a shame to no longer be able to read them because i can't read or speak Japanese (dutch is my first language, English second).

A lot of (younger) people that played newer games of a franchise first are rating the games they are built upon lowly without seeing what was revolutionary at the time it came out, and how they built upon each other. For example a lot of people rate the old Pokemon red and blue 1 or 2 stars because they don't have all the all the conveniences/spritework/designs that newer games out. Then when i remember how i felt playing it i didn't feel it missed anything, you had to be there when it came out i guess. Like cooking on a wooden stove before the time of electricity. If you cook with electricity first and then go back to cooking old fashioned of course you are going to have a lot to complain about. That's why when i try out a new franchise i like to start at the very first game, and see how it develops. Makes me appreciate the experience more. I can better see when a game in a franchise is bad or if it did something revolutionary when it came out. Calling persona 3 a mediocre game (like that is an established fact?) is ridiculous. At least you give facts to prove your point why in general this game has a bad reputation (sales figures/background about the troubled development). Mudkipz only says ''the whole thing is high quality and that's a fact", that really doesn't tell me anything.

I think it's okay to use English if you're following a mutual, so I partially retract my statement above.

Pangburnさん
I can't promise that my reviews are the complete consensus of Japanese gamers, but I try to avoid extreme bias in my reviews.
Still, if I've helped Pangburn-san in any way, I'm very happy about that.
Speaking of which, your review of MGS2 was good!
Next time I'm going to write a review of MGS2. Half of it will be about one of the best MGS2 lovers in Japan, Keikaku Ito.
Thanks for your comment!

Rensieさん
Don't worry. This is the last review I will write in Japanese.(maybe)
I agree with every inch of your opinion. Especially the part about Pokemon and the wooden stove. I even knocked myself to my knees.
I think it's really strange to give a game a low rating just because it's not convenient, without considering how much trial and error it took to come up with the basic form of the game we have today. (Oh, I remember Shigesato Itoi from MOTHER saying something similar.)
I've been enlightened by your comments and when I get time I'll write a slightly more serious review of Persona 3, along with MGS2.
Dank u voor uw commentaar!

ああ、でも今回の件で少女革命ウテナというアニメが嫌いになりました。あとロックマンも。

Just passing by to say I really do enjoy reading your reviews, it's very enlightening to get insight from a japanese person about japanese games, regardless of how much they represent - or don't - the consensus in the country.

Reviewing MGS2, it's going to take quite a while because of the sheer volume of peripheral information. I'm sorry. Please give me some time.
おのれー、Hideo Kojima. And Keikaku Itoh.

CDXさん
I don't consider my writing to be enlightening,(I think I'm saying normal things.) but I am delighted when people say that they simply enjoy reading it.
