Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a 2017 tactical RPG made by Ubisoft, meshing their Rabbids franchise with Nintendo's Super Mario franchise. And it handles a unique approach to the genre, giving as much freedom to the player as it can.
It tells the story of the Mushroom Kingdom going into disarray when the Rabbids get their hands on a cyberhelmet that merges items together. As a result, they merge with many different items that give them unique interactions and personalities. As a result, Mario teams up with various cosplaying Rabbids as his friends to save the Rabbid wearing the enemy-spawning helmet (appropriately named Spawny) from Bowser Jr.'s influence.
As you traverse the regular biomes now inhabited by various structural items and Rabbids interacting with them, you will find various puzzles that supply you with concept art, a sound library, and orbs, which can be used to strengthen your characters, which is useful for the oncoming battles you will have to face.
The battles give a sense of flexibility that can only often be found in a game like this. You will have many different moves and weapons at your disposal. You start off with typical dashing and blasters, but you will quickly pick up on status effects, super abilities to make battles easier and many other features. Before, during and after battles, you will earn a number of coins depending on your performance and brainpower. These can be used to buy weapons, which can strengthen your characters and their diversity. This is a great way of progression.
I had a blast with this game. It had a lot of passion put into it and was charming, hilarious, epic and an overall great time. You hear that? Nintendo is not limiting!!!
