Mortal Kombat is a series like Transformers and Godzilla. It made up a massive chunk of my franchise despite the fact I was very unable to experience a lot of parts of the series. A lot of my time went into watching gameplay, all the cutscenes and studying the lore.
I have some pretty large gripes. The story’s structure leads to a lot of characters disappearing for large chunks. It leads to quite a few characters not getting the spotlight which is unfortunate as pretty much every character is likeable. They managed to turn characters like Baraka and Geras characters I liked but didn’t care for much into really likeable protagonists. Most of the characters have some really nice relationships like Johnny and Kenshi and Tanya and Mileena. I think the weakest of these are all the Kameos who barley get any screentime, Havik, Rain, Reiko and Nitara who get barley any development or flushing out. And Raiden who barley gets any screentime past his chapter despite him being Lui Kang’s replacement. It seems like he’s going to be the main character or at least one of them until he gets replaced by Lui Kang.
I really enjoy the gameplay. It’s fun and fluid, moderately easy to learn and I enjoy the Kameo system. The Story is honestly mostly solid. I think the chapter system hinders it with none of the villains getting any wins to make them believable threats or a lot of characters getting shafted. But it has some nice emotional beats, good pacing and mostly solid writing. Mostly.
Pretty solid Game that I’m really satisfied with after eleven’s terrible writing.
