Current MegaTen ranking

Not definitive, going to update it everytime I complete more games in the franchise

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Peak. It's just peak.

No alignment bias, best story in the franchise, best characters, a co-op system that makes the party you build alignment based as well (like you have to see if the demons are the same alignments as other demons and/or as your MC) and a very unique atmosphere paired with the best dungeon crawling in the franchise.

The game is also incredibly obtuse and arcaic in a lot of ways, making it a huge challenge but not so much in a good way.

First person dungeon crawling is actually peak, guys.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
I love the shit out of Nocturne.
This game is so unique, even by SMT standards: I love the dungeons, I love the combat, and I really like the characters (except Chiaki she can fuck off with her apple bottom jeans boots with the jeans lookin ahh).

Even though I firmly believe a lot of the good stuff comes out from the TDE content, making the "alignment bias" more of an issue in terms of game enjoyment, I think it's absolutely worth going through it; like, IV Neutral makes the game a huge slog after the alignment lock with tons of subquests, meanwhile Nocturne gives you access to the best bossfights in the game (I think Nocturne overall has the best fights in the series so far).

Dungeons are really good but they overstay their welcome A BIT TOO MUCH, and the game is kinda broken with a MC that has many builds viable for vanilla content, but my prayers go for anyone who went through TDE without a STR based MC.

This game is so stupid I love it so much

Shin Megami Tensei IV
Shin Megami Tensei IV
I really like the characters and the world building in this game, the whole vibe is insane and unique with one of my absolute favourite soundtracks ever.

It has the most obvious alignment bias so far in terms of morale and game content, with mediocre dungeons and silly writing overall (goes hard though). Smirk is funny but makes the game too easy (the companion thing is so fucking stupid), but those are a lot of things I want to see how they'll deal with in Apocalypse.

Shin Megami Tensei V
Shin Megami Tensei V
Absolutely PHENOMENAL combat system paired with the best MC possibilites so far, this game is a huge blast to play from start to finish. The soundtrack is stupid good, Ueno might be one my favourite game themes ever.

Story is very bad, characters are VERY bad, dungeon design is mediocre at best.
Vengeance can address a lot of these issues and honestly I might be in for more SMTV, but Atlus re-releases can suck my nuts and I can easily wait (Shadow of the Erdtree comes out the same day anyways)

Persona 5
Persona 5
I had a huge honeymoon phase with this game but it really didn't grow much after I beat it. The soundtrack and art direction are absolutely insane, and the whole pacing made me stick to the screen for many, MANY hours.
That being said, I think the game is just way too lenient and the dungeon design is very inconsistent, with some very low quality fights that don't make you push the combat to its potential. The "social stuff" is very cozy but Morgana limiting you it's so annoying. Also the plot really does NOT dwell into the interesting themes and gives too much screentime to dumb stuff (some plot devices are straight up insane for how stupid they are). Okay characters, bad chemistry.

Great game overall but kinda shallow
