The first Mario Kart I ever really enjoyed, this one was a banger. Not only did it control a lot better than previous Mario Karts I had tried, but it also had a lot else going for it. Like online, or the introduction of the Retro Cups to 3D Mario Kart games, which doubled the amount of tracks the game would've otherwise had. I'd call this a landmark Mario Kart, it's important in many ways.
