Memes aside, MGR is a dynamite action game that rewards the player for learning & practicing the mechanics to a competent level... and brutally punishes those that don't. Players who struggle with action games might not find this enjoyable, but I recommend it for fans of the over-the-top action genre, for there is no other game that can deliver it as much and as intensely as MGR. This game also has one of THE best vocal soundtracks of any action game. Something many reviews don't mention is the replayability of this game. Like other PlatinumGames action titles, there's a high level of mastery that can be achieved in the combat system, and with some practice, challenge runs on increased difficulty makes MGR great for players who like dedicating the practice time, almost like a fighting game. Besides the gameplay, the writing, voice acting, and theatrics of this game are highly enjoyable as a sort of campy action movie. I'm pretty sure Quinton Flynn was drunk when he recorded some of Raiden's voice lines.

A great game from my childhood. While the original was a great experience, today I would be more inclined to play a randomizer or other romhack.

Genre defining, as close to a perfect action platformer as you can get. Stands the test of time even with excellent newer titles like Order of Ecclesia. Incredible soundtrack, strong gameplay, great level design / progression, and good itemization. Has few flaws that don't detract from the overall experience. I'm strongly considering NG+ of the Sega Saturn version (recently translated to English) for the extra content & characters, as well as numerous romhacks.
