for years i've longed for a game with puzzle-like traversal that'd offer me the same kind of intense anxiety i'd feel while climbing a boss like malus in shadow of the colossus. if you're like me and you've slept on this - knock it the fuck off

tomb raider provides platforming nervousness in spades with ruthlessly unforgiving - but incredibly smart, well paced and rewarding - stage design. the way it constantly forces you to analyze level geometry, take risks and conserve (extremely limited) save crystals only amps up to greater and more sadistic heights as it goes. and it's goddamn brilliant

PLAY this fucking game. do not write it off based on your missed jumps in the first stage or the drab exterior. this shit WILL hook you in. and just for the record: the controls are perfect. don't even start with that

@josh15 i'm stingy as hell with my 10s. it's a fantastic game in just about every respect but there's definitely tangible room for improvement. i do think this is the series """humble beginnings""" so to speak and the very best is likely still to come. especially considering how the level design generally feels it just gets progressively better as it goes and i've heard the later games are much more challenging in that respect

this game's hard, but that's definitely largely due to its learning curve. i don't think i'd get the same anxiety from earlier stages that i do on later ones upon replay. either way - i still really fuckin loved it
I played 3 for like 15 mins and hated the controls but that was in 2016. I didnt like the reboot or its sequel much, maybe its time to dive into this one for real

@nowitsreyntime17 the controls are giga omega filter material. you get used to them with practice, but in short just keep in mind that lara moves on a grid. also bear in mind that there's a buffer when you press jump while standing still. so if you want to do a backflip, cartwheel or a standing forward jump, it's best to press square and then immediately hold the direction you want to go. there's much more room for error if you try pressing them simultaneously

also: sidestepping is for repositioning, not moving left/right regularly. you can sidestep while on a plane to get to the edge without changing elevation, sliding or falling off. very useful

also also: you can hold X to constantly attempt to interact with an item on the ground. so if you're trying to pick something up and it's not working, just sidestep around to get your positioning right while holding X - she'll pick it up when you've got it right

that's my anti-filter guide
I will keep that in mind when I eventually give it a go, ty Chandler-San

I remember i got like omega filtered by the Anniversary remake of this game and just had to download a save so I could load to the checkpoint after the obstacle, I think i just started doing that a bunch right at the end. Besides that, the First reboot series is cool.

Anniversary is the coughing baby to 96's hydrogen bomb. I'm glad you recognize kino when you see it Chandler.

@NOWITSREYNTIME17 Two days late and forgot to do this, but I figured I'd share some of my anti-filter tips too:

- The Lara's Mansion tutorial highlights the Look and Walk buttons, and these two are the most vital mechanics of the game. If you're unsure if a ledge is safe to drop off from, walk towards it then look down. If your view is obstructed, use look to have the camera focus on Lara's POV to get a sense of your surrounding. A bit of an obvious advice to give, but you'd be surprised at how often many challenging obstacled become easier to manage with proper use of these two.

- In conjuction with what Chandler said about the grid system, jump buffer, and the whole walking thing, there are two types of jump maneuvers the game has you doing: standing, and running. Rule of thumb is that if something is a whole space away, walk towards to the edge, stand still, then jump. If there's more space available, it's safe to do a running jump (+ grab if necessary). There's also a swan dive technique you can use if jumping while holding the walk and up buttons, not only giving you a higher altitude to snag a landing, but also swiftly shifting into the swimming state if aiming for the water. Knowing which to use to mitigate fall damage, and chaining it all together, is near vital for mastering later stages.
I will keep this in mind as well when I play ty

you're forgetting how it has the best abortion related line in all of video games

@averypaledog yknow, i haven't been keeping track of that in other games so i'm gonna agree by default

I never understood why people complain about controls in this game, like sure its tank control but everything is so consistent almost in a mathematical way that once you understand the grid based system then you always know if you can make a jump or no. And if you failed the jump its 100% on you.

Atmosphere in this game is still something special, love the level design, main theme and all, such a gem.

@blaevy i get why they don't like it, but i'd chalk it up to nothing less than a shallow outlook towards game design

@chandler a narrow minded ideal that games should be designed one specific way and straying from that design philosophy boxes games into "good design" or "bad design." this is what is called From Soft Brain.

@gruel it's funny you mention that because most the shit reviews for ac6 are total fromsoft brain. "not my series!!!"

thats how i feel when i play any game that isn't a edutainment game

There's something wrong that individual. Brain is probably made of gruel. Guess they don't call them that for nothing.

If you want climbing puzzle induced tension please check out Peaks of Yore from this year. I love that game and there is no doubt that's exactly what it sets out to create
