the pinnacle of beat em ups with ostriches

im already thinking about replaying this one. oddly enough, i just noticed that this game released 25 years ago today.

a fun, cozy little shmup that can easily be beaten in one sitting. cute animations and great music. and a great translation, as to be expected from Hilltop.

not nearly as mind meltingly difficult as the other cave shooters i've played. don't worry, it's still tough as nails, but it's no (do)donpachi.

for me that's a good thing tho lol. this game owns dude

a combination of two of my favorite genres, so obviously i was gonna like this one. fun game!

pretty standard arcade beat em up with some power ups that make the game worth finishing. not perfect whatsoever, but it's fun. just some odd decisions made, like why add ledges if the enemies can't fall off of them? why are some of the better special moves mapped to a quarter circle + jump? why give the final boss 3 full bars of health? very quarter munchy so i'd recommend playing with infinite credits.

still had fun with with it tho, just as a game that released the same year as Battle Circuit, it's pretty easy to pick this one apart.

some neat ideas here and there, a lot of which have been more fully realized in games like streets of rage 4. still a fun time though with some fun combat (that may or may not feel a bit too slow).

if this game were at EVO, i'd be a double millionaire

also the music in both of these games are great. super impressive game for the hardware too. big fan.

some of the most fun i've ever had playing a video game

i've loved all of the touhou games so far, but this one is legit fantastic

probably should've played this before the sequel, but it was a good time nonetheless

yup this game is dope.

the fact that people clear these on one credit actually terrifies me

im not too big on the "versus" style of touhou games, but this was still fun nonetheless

i really like the speed and weight of the fighters in this game. feels faster and more responsive than virtua fighter, easier to control than tekken, and not too fast to get overwhelmed like in a lot of 2d fighters. i liked this a lot, looking forward to trying others in the series

absolutely wild that this released in 1989. obviously way ahead of it's time. the ship's hitbox feels a bit bigger than i'd like, and the last few levels had me dying constantly, but a very fun shmup for sure
