A story is taking place. Do I understand it? I want to. I want to so badly.

Citizen Sleeper is a cool game with simple but expressive mechanics, a great setting, and evocative, well-done writing. I like this direction for narrative adventure games, this along with Disco Elysium are definitely proving out this particular style of approach to the genre.

Gameplay in Citizen Sleeper feels a lot like a board game, with a combination of dice-based worker placement and advancement clocks, similar to what you would find in the tabletop game Blades in the Dark.
These systems work very well together and, combined with simple stats and special abilities, give you a ton of ways to express yourself and explore life on the station. The balancing is a bit soft, unfortunately... I never felt like I had to make any hard decisions and by the end had enough options and power to not really have to worry about anything. I would love to see a version of this game with some teeth -- I want to be forced to make hard choices about how I spend my time or have serious consequences (and possibility) for failure.

This game is aesthetically impressive, though the visuals are fairly simple. There is one environment, rendered in simple 3D, that conveys very well what the station as a whole and the specific neighborhoods you visit are like. The character portraits are well done and have an expressive and appealing style that fits the tone and themes of the game perfectly.
The music in Citizen Sleeper is extremely well done. It is mostly ambient and chill, but again, this fits the themes well and serves to immerse you in this world.

The writing is compelling and well done, composed mainly of fairly short side-stories focusing on specific characters and goals. These all wend their way towards endings that are usually more touching than tragic, but you get the sense of really making a difference on this station during your time here.

I like this game a lot, even though the lack of consequence robs it of some of its power. Definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of this type of narrative heavy adventure game.

A gripping, though-provoking narrative, with spectacular moment-to-moment writing. To write much more about the game would be me writing "evocative" far too much in the same way games critics used to write "visceral".
