cool bit of formal experimentation, in that way which was really zeitgeisty when it was released. there's still a lot to like about this, even with 11 years remove; the way the game actively gets harder the more you disobey is such a nice touch. is it the most mature & complex approach to the subject matter? probably not, but i still think it's a really great and significant small game which honestly says what it has to say much better than a lot of AAA games that have tried similar stuff.

i've completed this about five times now, both before and after they added the much-earlier softlock screen. it's what you actually want from a casual game - low-impact, visually uncluttered, easy to pick up and put down on a whim, doesn't distract from a podcast or whatever - and thats why nobody will ever effectively copy it. its just good game design!

this game achieves everything it set out to do and it does so while being a lot of fun. i also remember playing very early versions of this at trade shows for a couple years before it eventually got a full release, and just being so excited about it. i know ive criticised other games by saying "it's fun with friends, but what isn't", but this is a game which really sets out to be fun with friends, so criticising it for not being anything more is like howling at breakfast for not being dinner.

it's got the same weird anti-communist cold war lens as papers please, but it's a game jam game and it's very well-executed and neat, which i'll always give positive marks for. i remember playing this before Papers Please and being so excited for that game's potential. but unfortunately, in retrospect, americans
