I just do not get the appeal of these levels. I only made it through 9 of them, but they seemed more like combat encounters than fun to play levels. I played on Hurt me Plenty and holy shit the amount of enemies they throw at you is insane, just feels like a slog.

Basically this is Doom (1993), but longer and (kinda) boring version.

Dude, these levels are ass! They make me wanna strafe without looking!

a bunch of additional maps (in fact its not even that hard to figure out who made each map after some exploration) complementary to the original doom, bundled together with a price tag, being the most prevalent trend of their design "more enemies OR bigger map = better"...so in lots of them you end up being in a big square fighting a bigger horde of enemies coming at you. hey at least you have the super shotgun to do so...but is it worth it to disregard any interesting progression just to face more enemies?

well yes it was 1994 and people just wanted to kill more demons and the super shotgun is nuts so who am i to judge?

Never liked Doom II as much as the first until this recent replay where something just clicked. The bigger enemy roster, the more intricate levels, the fucking super shotgun. Everything about it just leads to a more explosive and brutal game. All these new enemy types are able to create so many unique combat encounters that are all so much fun to deal with, and the super shotgun's absurd power allows them to throw way bigger amounts of them at you. I honestly don't even mind some of the more infamous gimmicky levels like the chasm or downtown. Completely insane game and I love it, bizarre flaws and all.

While I really appreciate what it brings to the table in terms of mechanics, Doom 2's quality is considerably less consistant than Doom 1.

Don't get me wrong, there's a LOT of banger levels but they're often followed by less than ideal ones (though Downtown isn't THAT bad, you guys just don't know how to use the automap)

Still, I hold nothing but respect for this game and all the fan content it inspired. I still had fun even if UV kinda puts you at edge with all the chaingunners and revenants it likes to put fucking everywhere.

actually bad. as someone who likes their fair share of old games, this one just sucks, mainly due to poor level design, and is only thought to be a masterpiece through the power of social inertia. i'm sure mods make it better, but we aren't reviewing mods.

A guy I was playing this online with turned to me and said "glad to see people still playing this game and keeping it alive :)" before immediately exploding into a pile of blood due to bad connection

Insane gunplay, but the level design...It really makes me exhausted

Fumaram diamba vencida pra fazer as fases desse jogo (eu sei q infelizmente essa porra foi rushada) infelizmente pra mim a super shotgun e os novos inimigos n conseguem compensar

I wasn't sure if the game held up to my memories of it once, so I booted it up to play one or two levels, see how it felt, y'know? I made it halfway through the game before snapping out of the trance I was in, at which point I decided that, yeah, it holds up pretty well.

Doom 2 is just more doom, but never hits the peak of the first. Sure there is a bit more enemy variety but the new enemies don't feel particularly great and end up leading you to hide. more often than not. The maps also seem like a step down. Jumping into hell in the first game still had an impact on adult me with no sort of nostalgia, while here half the time I ended up walking around a puzzle map trying to progress. That added onto the fact that this game either felt like a drag or was not properly set out, made the last few areas a slog. You would think that a level that starts you out by fighting two of the previous game's bosses at the same time would be a penultimate stage but really sits 2/3'rds of the way through. Realistically If I was to play some more doom, between the two I think I would pick Doom 1 99% of the time.

I personally like the first Doom's level designs more, but still, the levels in this game are really cool and fun, and the new enemies really give more variety to the game, also the super shotgun is the best fire weapon made in any FPS game.

not nearly as good as the first one

doom 2 is better than doom 1 because i spend less time thinking about the weirdos who treat liking doom as their entire personality

You have entered deeply into the infested starport. But something is wrong. The monsters have brought their own reality with them, and the starport's technology is being subverted by their presence.

Ahead, you see an outpost of Hell, a Fortified Zone. If you can get past it, you can penetrate into the haunted heart of the starbase and find the controlling switch which holds the Earth's population hostage.

This game plays like a joke. That’s not to say it’s bad, it’s just that Doom 2 seems like it was a release of tension after the relatively straight-faced original. There are tons of ambushes, traps, gimmick levels, and funny situations that are scattered about the campaign, instead of the carefully considered structure and pacing that you may have gotten used to. In Doom, each episode required you to start with just a pistol, so the levels could slowly introduce ideas and escalate situations, resetting the stakes when the next episode started up. With one long campaign in Doom 2, it’s just a grab bag of random gimmicks until you reach the final boss. All the new monsters and funny level designs make it more fun than Doom, but not necessarily better overall. The highs are high, but the lows of getting repeatedly killed in unpredictable ambushes are incredibly low. It’s still an easy recommendation, just expect to roll your eyes a few times before the end.

Back in the 1990s you paid full price for a sequel to a game which was essentially just the first one with brand new levels, a few new enemies, and an additional weapon - that being the super shotgun which fires 2 shotgun shells at once and makes a sound like God himself is closing the doors on the demons ever possibly escaping into an afterlife which is anything other than everlasting torment.

AND IT KICKS ASS.

So much worse than the original in almost every way.

All of the carefully constructed encounters of the original are replaced with enemies being haphazardly placed everywhere. The super shotgun is great but the level design really went to shit.

The first one is much more better.

I think the upped enemy variety is amazing even today and the fast paced almost John Wick sometimes feeling combat is still stupid slick after all these years.

Where it shows the most cracks these days is maybe it's level design and boss encounters. The Icon of Sin fucking sucks and there's an almost (albeit really charming and personality driven) amateurish level design that can sometimes make you feel stupid for not seeing the tiny crack in the wall that lets you progress.

Other than that, it's still Doom 2 and it still fucking rules. The mod scene for this game will never not be amazing too.

They took DOOM, an already perfect game, and gave it an even better shotgun. No notes. Some of the maps haven't aged the best in terms of level design but those were all made by Sandy Peterson anyway. Romero levels are and always will be peak

Were the Chaingunners and Archviles worth bigger levels? More at 11.

While at its core it still is Doom I remember being insanely annoyed by the level design? Really sick new enemies tho

"Dude, the player will hit a button, then 100 enemies will spawn behind them. Also we're gonna include an enemy with a minigun that can hitscan you to death across the entire map. It's gonna be sick!"

I do actually kind of like this game a bit more than the first, but man it does have some really bullshit moments. Icon of Sin sucks. Higher highs and lower lows from the OG, but let's be real, a lot of the iconic Doom things people remember really are from this. Super shotgun is still one of the most satisfying shotguns in any FPS game.

Firing the SSG once is a more potent sensation than an orgasm.
