its hard to describe how important this game is to the advancement of the gaming industry, let alone the first person shooter genre. literally every gaming franchise wanted to be halo 3 in the late 2000s, and for good reason. it's a great game, with a multiplayer component that defined the pro gaming organizations we know today. personally, not my favorite halo, but i still love it a lot.

chief and arbiter definitely have touched each others willys

The greatest multiplayer shooter of all time in my opinion. So many great memories from the main story, the multiplayer, and even custom games.

The best Halo game, and one of the best video games of all time. Great multiplayer, and a phenomenal campaign. I only wish the campaign was longer, and I played Xbox Live more in it's heyday. High recommend.

i have played this game to fucking death. hasn't gotten any worse since the day it came out. best halo campaign, best multiplayer, and all but limitless customization thanks to forge mode. endless fun with friends. greatest shooter ever made

I do not give even a slight fuck about Space Commandos doing Space Military shit, it bores me straight to sleep (Gravemind is only good part) but Halo was the only (console) multiplayer shooter with a good jump (and therefore good movement) so its 5/5.

The Halo 3 campaign does a fantastic job at providing the means for the player to get the most out of its sandbox, this is one of, if not the best first person shooter campaigns ever made.

I hadn't played Halo 3 since around it's release and I went into the MCC (Master Chief Collection) skeptical that it was as good as everyone made out, planning on just trying it out and screwing around only to find myself motivated to finish the fight yet again.

Whatever a red flag is in a game, this is the opposite. The game wastes no time in getting you into the action and with each scenario I found subtle ways to influence the battle so much so that a death resulted in barely any frustration (other than Jackal snipers which force themselves into being a no1 priority in a way that feels at odds with the Halo sandbox). Dying was simply another chance to tackle the fight in a different way. Would I go in duel wielding, alternating fire on each weapon so I can continuously shoot. Or would I hang back with the BR. Or would I chuck a sticky grenade into an enemy dropship only for the mounted gun to become detatched in the explosion allowing me to pick it up and take on a whole squad of covenant. All this with a soundtrack that can perfectly harmonise with the battle on screen, a favourite of mine being a moment during the track 'Released'.

The last combat example happened on a recent playthrough and highlights the variety of ways fights can play out in unpredictable ways.
Effective randomness (randomness generated out of a physics interactions or a high number other variables instead of a dice roll) is often seen as a negative yet in Halo 3 the core gameplay is so dynamic that it imparts the feeling that any unforseen moment is just par for the course. If I can benefit from an unpredictable result of my actions or friendly AI then it only feels fair that I can be on the flip side of that coin from time to time. Of course on higher difficulties this may be harder to swallow (I only played on Heroic) however I feel with the right mindset, many out of the blue deaths will be met with a laugh instead of a flying controller.

Level design this time is a big step up, even with indoor areas there are many changes in elevation and flanking routes, sometimes routes that let you circumvent large areas and get directly behind the enemy like in Sierra 117's finale. Couple this with the still generally great ai and you will be making constant decisions about how to turn the fight in your favour.
Equipment makes an impact here as well, while enemies rarely make good use of it they now present a new wrinkle to the sandbox.
Combat can now be altered by the smart use of these tools like accessing higher vantage points with the grav lift or providing a buffer between you and the enemies via a bubble shield or regenerator. Offensive tools like the flare, trip mine and power drain fill the role of hampering enemies defenses.
Perhaps the biggest impact made by this new edition is in vehichle combat where even the all mighty scarab cannot blast through a bubble shield. When on foot with all sorts of vehichle armageddon going on it cant hurt to have an ace up your sleeve.
An argument could be made that the equipments impact in missions isn't keenly felt due to the player only being able to carry one at a time and the lack of any with direct damage capabilities (the exception being the trip mine and even then it has clear limitations). However this rarity incentivises more intentional use making the moments where a strategy pays off all the more satisfying. Halo 3's core balance of gunplay, grenades, melee and vehichles would probably suffer if another big factor were thrown into the mix, as it stands it doesn't take centre stage but then I found myself missing them when going back to CE.

Enemies stay largely the same from previous games with the biggest change being the prominent role Brutes now take. They largely fill the role of Elites, they never felt as mobile as Elites darting around freely in CE. The closest Brutes come to this will be with charging chieftens or those with jump packs. Still they retain a sense of self preservation - unless armour is destroyed - and will back off when needed.
Brute vehichles are mostly analogous to both human and covenant vehichles, Chopper is basically a Ghost and the same goes for the Prowler and Warthog. They are enjoyable to use but dont substantially shake up vehichle combat.
Although not controllable by the player, the Scarab is where vehichle combat differs most from CE and 2. Large moving enemies or playspaces are a powerful tool if done right, like with Shadow of the Colossus or Outer Wilds, dealing with and navigating on these behemoths is a rush and thankfully a mostly smooth experience, the general rule is to somehow get on the Scarab and fight your way to it's weak spot. They do unfortunately have a pretty limited area to manouver, usually they end up circling a fairly small area yet somehow remain intimidating and good focal point for a host of vehichles to fight around.

Visually while an overuse of bloom is present as with many games from the mid 2000's, Halo 3 is still easy to appreciate. With its mix of the more grounded human side with the exagerrated covenant, each level is full of the specatcle of each side battling against the backdrop of massive forerunner structures and endless vistas of planetary bodies and alien skies.

A through line of Halo 3 seems to be variety. Variety of locations, visual themes, level design, enemies, friendly NPC's, weapons, vehichles and scenarios. One moment you are ducking and weaving a better armed foe, the next you are demolishing them in a tank.

There are some issues, a handful of times I found the usually competent AI to fail and simply stand around till I took them out. The story while unintrusive with mostly well written dialogue and cinematic moments, could still feel underdeveloped, for example Johnson appeared out of nowhere at the end only to get killed off moments later which felt overly contrived. It's nice that the letterboxed moments play out in real time if "skipped" yet it's disappointing the scripted moments like a chieften kicking Johnson can't be interrupted. I get why that could be a tall ask to plan for but then it's a bit of an own goal to show players a moment involving typically interactable aspects like enemies in-game that they cannot interact with. Perhaps this feature wasn't worth the middle ground of gameplay and cutscene it represents and the developers should have simply picked a lane in these moments.

Still even with it's faults Halo 3 pulls off the challenging task of making a roller coaster campaign without the rail.

Not much to say about this game which hasn't already been said. I mean if you own a 360, likely you will have played Halo 3. What's nice about Halo 3 is that even after all these year, with the multiplayer servers now shut down, it is still a great campaign and it really holds up well. The campaign is an excellent 8 hour romp through a variety of interesting environments with all the things you expect from a halo game. Excellent controls, a wide variety of useful weapons, wonderful enemy design and some of the smoothest gameplay you will see on the console. For some, Halo 3 is the last of the mainline Halo games, with Bungie passing on developing duties to 343 studios for Halo 4. I think this speaks as much to the quality of the previous Halo games as it does the issues with 4, and there's two main areas for me where this is really apparent. For a start its the music and sound effects. The new tracks in Halo 3 are great and really fit the mood of the series. Ending the game with another Warthog run, with the original Halo music was also a wonderful choice and has brought the series full circle. Secondly, the game has a great story. Not only does it actually make sense, it's also interesting. You get to know the characters and their intentions better. There's a couple of nice surprise moments towards the end too. Of course there are a few things I would change about the game. There are points where it is a bit difficult to figure out what the game wants you to do next and I did find some of the skulls a bit too difficult to find (I can't grenade jump, sorry). But that feeling when you finally get through the difficult section of a level on the hardest difficulty is still just as good as ever, and is what makes the game great. Of course you need this one!

To me, the Halo experience peaked here.
I think there's a debate to say Halo 2 might have a better arena experience / gameplay. But as a package, bang for buck, Halo 3 is where its at.
One of the best gameplay in the series (if not the best), the Campaign is insanely epic. In storytelling it falls short to H2, but in level design, AI, enemy encounters, and set pieces it blows out of the park.
But what really elevates this game above H2 (imo) is the social experience. Custom Games, Forge, the File Share, Theater, Bungie.net, Clans, Machinimas. Everyone was playing or talking about Halo 3.
The community and social experience in H3 was unmatched.

It’s been nearly 10 years since I first played this game and I’m still enjoying the campaign to this day. Out of all the Halo games, none of them have managed to nail every aspect as well as 3. I can’t even begin to describe how incredible the soundtrack is.

Dun-dun-dun-duuuuun, dun-dun-dun-duuun-dun-dun-dun.........ok I’ll stop.

This game actually reminded a lot of Return of the Jedi, in that although I don’t think it’s overall as good as what came before it, (Empire Strikes Back and Halo 2 respectively) I overall prefer it for the emotional impact, being that’s it’s the big capstone on the first Halo trilogy.

The chief (heh heh) difference between this and Jedi however this is also a video game, and a damn good one at that. This is easily the most fun I’ve had with this series so far solely from a gameplay standpoint, from the standard combat to the more big set pieces like the Scarab fights and the final Warthog run, both of which being my favourite sections if you’re wondering. Also I cannot begin to emphasise how big a Godsend it is to actually be able to melee the Flood, it results in encounters with them being way less cumbersome.

Now as for the story, as mentioned I do think it’s a slight downgrade from 2, but only really when it comes to the villains, more specifically the Prophet of Truth. I know it’s a tired criticism to bring up the inferior new VA or how he’s now reduced to just a raving lunatic, but it’s gotten to that stage for a good reason. Fortunately that’s my only major gripe with the story, otherwise I think it overall fares really well. Seeing Chief and the Arbiter properly team up was awesome and a great culmination of the latter’s arc, the character deaths like Johnson feel earned and satisfying, and you finally get to kill that Guilty Spark prick!

Overall I’m quite pleased with this series so far, and I’m looking forward to hopefully checking out ODST and 4 soon, and of course Infinite whenever that comes out. 10/10

Halo 3 was the conclusion to the trilogy I wanted it to be. It takes everything I loved about Halo CE and Halo 2 and makes the almost perfect finale.

While I do think the story of Halo 3 isn't as strong as Halo 2's story, it does live up to the grandness of what you'd want a finale in a trilogy to be. Rather than have deep intertwining story about both the UNSC and Covenant, here it's just one big grand beeline to "finish the fight". And "Finish the fight" it does really deliver. Everything that happens here is a culmination of what the games built up. Allighning forces with the Elite, seeing all the established characters have some significant moment in the story. It's all one big payoff and the Bungie writers did a very good job.

Gameplay here is my favorite of the trilogy too. All the weapons now are perfectly balanced, and nothing feels too weak or too overpowered. The brought back the assault rifle and it is definitely the best version of the assault file, finally not feeling like SMG and having the perfect range/damage ratio. Brutes are no longer bullet sponges thank god, considering they are the main enemy you fight in this game. Flood is also back, but they weren't as frustrating as they were in the first 2 games.

The only thing I didn't like about Halo 3 was how they dialed back on Arbiter's character, he definitely should have had a bigger role in this game rather than just being the "Co-op" partner considering he is like the Master Chief of the Elite forces, and liberated them from the covenant. Also the first third of the game didn't have a really strong setting for a Halo game, it was quite a boring introduction considering all other types of settings for missions we've had. However after you leave earth, the setting excels.

Halo 3 started a fever back in the 2000s that I was never a part of, but I could clearly feel. Now that I finally arrived late to the party, I am officially a fan of the trilogy. I know the later games don't get as good as this, but I still look forward to trying those and having my own opinion.

Still the second best Halo game in the series, and one of the best games of all time.

It was very fun to play this one with my gf, she was happy to be the Arbiter the whole time, and she made the warthog run at the end a blast. I was happy to show this amazing game to my cute girlfriend.

The sense of scale here is astounding. Halo may be a series about being a cool super soldier, but it's also about ancient systems eating people alive. Everyone here gets swallowed in majesty and terror.

I'm told this is the peak of the franchise and I'm inclined to believe that. The action is fast and fun, the levels aren't horribly repetitive, and you have a good variety of weapons at your disposal to screw around with. About the only things I disliked were that some of the guns were undertuned and they probably could handled the Cortana acid trips a little better. Definitely give this one a look if you've ever wanted to check out Halo.

I truly feel for the zoomers who didn't experience the sheer level of hype surrounding Halo 3. It was an experience that I don't think can ever be replicated again. People lining up for the midnight release, high schoolers staying home from school to play all day, hell people bought a mediocre GTA clone just to play the multiplayer beta for the game. And the best part is that it was all warranted. Halo 3 was a goddamn masterpiece. The pinnacle of the franchise, and quite possibly one of the greatest endings to a series ever.

Sure the story isn't as interesting as Halo 2's, with it simplifying the Prophet of Truth and Gravemind to what amount to mustache twirling villains. Sure the campaign is extremely short, and the level Cortana is dreadful. Sure the multiplayer map design and weapons don't feel quite as good as they do in 2. But as an overall package, you really can't get any better than this in terms of FPS games.

343 wishes they could make a game half as good as this.

Halo 2 is more an action packed game than this one, but Halo 3 finally brings across the perfect feel of war. Missions where you start off rushing in with 100's of marines, alongside much improved vehicle missions, and improved level design compared to 2 make this the perfect ending to the trilogy.

And the warthog run elevates this to masterpiece level.

It might be nostalgia, but I have never played a shooter that hit my heart like Halo 3. This is the best game of the franchise and probably one of the best games ever.

I could go on for hours now typing stuff, but I wanna keep it short:

Wake me, when you need me.

this went pretty hard very epic in that 2007 video game way
but the og halo is still my fav

I mean it's Bungie Halo, what do you expect? Considering they wanted to end the story in Halo 2 but didn't have enough time and space to do so, the ending that we were given is very good.
9/10 - because 10/10 games are my personal favourite, but it was a very close decision.

Really surprised it feels a little bit less like shit to play AND the fact that the level design is really good compared to its predecessors but goddamn its still so fucking boring it makes me sad
