soooooo if you (5 people who liked it) remember my scott pilgrim review i talked about a guy i was kind of dating and that i was really getting to like slowly and as i said im honestly kind of into listening and reading and watching everything people i like like because i really want to understand their interests and such and thats how i also decided to continue my reading of the jojo series (i left at half of vento aureo and i liked stone ocean) because this guy liked steel ball run and i was pretty excited because steel ball run is highly regarded as the best part of jojo ever

incredibly enough steel ball run ended up being really the greatest jojo part not only in practise but also emotionally because we had a picnic we read steel ball run last volume together and he asked me to kiss and i ascended to heaven

from that onwards we really got closer and hung up made out shit like that went to a comics fest idk how theyre called in english and it was possibly one of the highest points of my life that i exchanged with a person i harmonised with so well

long story short he ended up dumping me with some half assed excuses and absolutely broke my heart and its still hard for me to recover from it right now mainly from how this whole thing ended and i really think i need a lot of time now

maybe i will talk about this in more detail in the echo review i have been planning to do for a whole year now i think

i started to play this game because he liked it and yknow i was pretty curious how a jojo fighting game would play out with all the different and unique characters and thats why i was incredibly excited to what they were gonna do with this kind of HUGE HUGE HUGE material

if for some reason you are not accustomed to the original media jojo is a shonen / seinen series where you just get a lot of action action action with some things called stands that are basically the manifestation of ones power into some weird designed dudes with some flamboyant colors and mindbreaking abilities and thats mainly why this series is beloved and incredibly interesting and then you also add the fact that araki is a true madman so its always fun to see shit play out

thaaaaats why i really think its kinda sad how bare bones this game is the battle progression is absolutely bare bones you only get one set of combo that plays out automatically and then you get as always light mid strong attacks some super ability you can use with a meter that refills and some other little stuff that doesnt really add that much to the depth of the combat and if you use the yknow abilities with the weird inputs how are they called you know the ones the ones where you gotta input stuff like half circle X you know the ones oh my god im so ignorant about fighting games its embarrassing

ok so whatever characters dont have that many moves anyway so you got a really short array of weapons which is really sad you only got a spoonful of combos you can make and even then its just easier to use the auto combo and thats fucking it

characters do look good and theres a wide variety of characters from every part of the series and they all look interesting to play but yet again this is mainly because arakis character design is unmatched and thats a pity that a series widely spread due to its multitude of abilities was translated into a stale fighting game

i have no idea how the online is because again as i always said i dont particularly care for online stuff because i dont like people all in all and its incredibly sad to not have friends to play it on local so lets just not talk about it

so the only last resort is the main story and obviously as every fighting game ever the story mode fucking suck you get some panels with different difficulties which go from poopoo shit difficulty to higher difficulty but this means that you will just lose some time with a stupid tutorial every time and besides its so stupid how the most story content you will get is some 2 lines of dialogue between the characters and thats fucking it absolutely sad

im not even that strict of a fighting game guy but even one of my favourite fighting games of all time thats right you guessed it naruto shippuden ultimate ninja storm 3 got more combos than this cmon

maybe i just wanted to talk about my heart being absolutely crumbled more than the game i havent even finished the story mode or played as every character maybe i will then update this review to some other info lmao until then im gonna get back to crying my eyes out until I can actually move on hahahahahahahhahaah my favourite character is gyro zeppeli hahahah

good game

It's shallow, it's broken, it's easy, it's not really different from any other bog standard anime arena fighter but you can beat the shit out of the characters from Vento Aureo so that pretty much makes this the best fanservice game.

No I have not played it online but it's a Bamco anime arena fighter why would you ever expect it to have anything but the worst online ever?

Me from 2 years ago would kill myself in response to the media I enjoy now

MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA
7/10

the venn diagram of people who play vanilla ice in this game and people who have been on epstein's island is a perfect circle

A simple pick up and play fighting game with the same arena style structure as Tekken, loaded to the brim with fantastical style and flair that the Jojo series is known for!

A wide selection of characters (personal highlights for me are Baoh, Ghiacchio and Polnareff) that deliver powerful hits in between striking fabulous poses lifted off of various fashion runways!

There are even interactions between specific characters that not only recount moments from the manga/anime, but strange "What if" scenarios like what if Fugo went after Diavolo instead of abandoning The Giorno Bruno Squad?

That's all very good and I have had fun playing the actual special stipulation matches the game sets up for you to unlock alternate costumes for characters/color palettes/artwork/win poses/etc, now is where I will start to list the negatives of this recent port of ASB.

1. The graphics settings are limited to windowed mode, game resolution, texture detail, and shadow detail. No further tweaking possible of model quality, interpolation, nothing more! I've had strange instances of this game running 60fps flawlessly fullscreen 1600x900 and then it can end up chugging down to 24 fps making me leave the match I'm in (If possible, I'll get to that in a moment.) to go into the options and tweak the limited graphics settings. I appreciate Melone's voice in my ear as I fiddle but he can only charm me so much!

That's more of a minor nitpick but this is going to be the experience across the board I feel: The netcode/online play of this game is WRETCHED!

I have had matches with the audio desynced a full 30 seconds behind the actions characters will be taking, 10 second button delay, and constant interruptions with the screen "TRANSMITTING" as Iggy sniffs the ground constantly interrupting the flow of a match and killing any excitement you may have had!

"Oh man online sucks sometimes? Can't you just leave the match and just take a loss if the connection's bad and you want to try again?" No you cannot! There is no option other than to FINISH THE MATCH once you start the match! You cannot see an opponents internet connection quality from the "Quick Match" Option and the "Custom Match Settings" where you select you only want to fight people within the same region will almost always fail, and the second you see a person with a high quality internet icon, guess what? 50/50 shot of actually getting to fight them! And you have to click on "Custom Match" again!

I've played Smash Ultimate against some people in very awful internet enviornments more rural areas or sparsely populated areas resulting in laggy matches, and this may be even worse than that because the process for finding matches is far more tedious than in Smash Ult!

Absolutely inexcusable netcode that butchers the value of this as a fighting game! Hell I've even tried playing with some friends on Steam that I KNOW have quality internet connections and low ping and the matches are still a good 4 seconds behind what we actually pressed and sometimes make the game run at 24 ish frames a second!

Cyberconnect2 should be shamed and ridiculed for the state it allowed this port's netcode to operate, and I'm playing on the best case scenario: PC! I cannot fathom the issues that Switch users are facing/had faced with this game!

I even asked my girlfriend for this game and I'm having fun playing it on it's own just against the CPU and the story special matches but the fact I can't even reliably fight against my other friends that have this game!

It's crushing, S-H-I-T Style. This would be an easy 4-5 star with how much there is to unlock if the netcode were even SLIGHTLY better...I would even put up with second delay for inputs as long as it would run 60fps reliably!

Truly shameful.

Thankfully my sister's copy of All-Star Battle R came in before the year ended, so honey select isn't the last game I'm gonna log before the year ends.

Also it's pretty fun!

Very clunky, play Capcom's JoJo instead

Play the original PS3 game via emulator and Parsec. This mere attempt to try to turn an extraordinary (in the most literal sense possible) game into a typical Capcom fighting game is abhorrent. The original will have its faults, but it would never have fallen into wanting to be a shameless Evo bait like this one.

As a JoJo fan, I love this. The interactions between characters are great even if they never met in the manga itself. All the moves and animations being almost panel perfect effects are great, as is the intro animations having a manga aesthetic. And having 50+ unique fighters who are all fun to play (and Shigechi) is amazing. Any game that lets me use Rohan to pound Anasui into the pavement he belongs (or worse) is amazing. From a presentation and fanservice perspective, it gets a 10/10.
The gameplay, however, is firmly in the 'decent' category. Feels just a little stiff, with nothing to really write home about. Combine that with bad netcode and not much in terms of single player content, and I'd give it a 6/10.
Overall, I'd highly recommend to any JoJo fans, but unlike games such as Spider-Man PS4 or Dragon Ball Fighterz, I don't think it'll hold the attention of anyone who doesn't like JoJo.
PS: Where the FUCK is Jobin?

They fixed a lot of issues but it’s still kinda a trash game that I love

They did add new characters who I love their playstyles a whole lot

Sad they didn’t update gappy’s moveset now that part 8 is done

JoJo.

They didnt add Male on Male sex to this remake

ANIMATE PURPLE HAZE FEEDBACK YOU COWARDS

Before we dive in, here's a quick refresher of the Joestar family tree: It all starts with Jonathan Joestar and his adoptive brother Dio Brando. Dio becomes a vampire and chops off Jonathan's head so he can affix himself to his body, as siblings sometimes do. Joseph Joestar, Jonathan's grandson, marries Suzi Q and has a child named Holly, who marries a Japanese man and gives birth to Jotaro Kujo. Joseph also had an affair with a Japanese woman, the two of them having a son named Josuke, who is technically Jotaro's uncle despite being younger than him. Jotaro has a daughter named Jolyne who does battle with Father Pucchi, who absorbs the bone of Dio, which technically makes him part Joestar along with his brother, Weather Report. Also, Dio sired four children using Jonathan's body, including Giorno Giovanna, which technically makes them Joestars but also Brandos, it's a real "my two dads" kinda situation, except the two dads are one dad - it's a whole thing. There's also an alternate continuity that starts with Johnny Joestar, an analog for Jonathan. Joseph is here too, and also Josuke, but Josuke is a fusion of two people, and then I guess Jodio is meant to be Giorno.

Ok, now that you're caught up, you're allowed to play the game. No, wait, babe why are you leaving...!?

I came to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure pretty late. In fact, my first exposure to the characters was Salty Bet. You always bet on JoJo's, you see. Or maybe you don't. Who can really say. "How many Dio's are there?" I remember asking my good friend Larry Davis.

"Uh, well that depends."

I decided to watch the anime alongside him, and later read the manga on which its based. It didn't take much, though, I was hooked by around Part 2 - Battle Tendency. That's the one with the literal Nazi, but I don't endorse Stroheim, I must make this very clear.

You've probably absorbed the broad strokes through cultural osmosis. JoJo's is a shonen (later seinen) series known for its flamboyant art direction, cerebral battles, and abundance of musical references that make localization an absolute god damn nightmare (Sticky Fingers is "Zipper Man," are you fucking kidding me?) It's absolutely crazy - bizarre, some might say - and I love every second of it. The best parts of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R, the game I've now taken a million years to get to, are the moments where the game is paying lip to the dimwitted fanboy in me. I Remember That: The Game. Strip that veneer away and what are you left with? A bad video game, that's what.

All-Star Battle R is about as bare bones as a 3D fighting game can get. Manual combos have no sense of flow between them, and all too often it's more beneficial to simply rely upon your basic auto-combo and build meter until you can pop your ultimate, which just makes battles extremely uninteresting. You'll also rely on throws a lot because the AI loves to block, and the shield meter is so long that it is simply unpractical to not just initiate a grab when the opponent is turtling. Every part of the game's basic mechanics just feels crummy to interact with. By comparison, Smash Bros. feels like a more rhythmic fighting game.

While most characters use their stands as a primary means of attacking, there are some with more unique playstyles, like the Hamon users of Parts 1 and 2, or the horseback riders of Part 7, but a lot of the more unique character-specific gimmicks just feel kind of clumsy in practice. Speaking of, character balancing is all over the place. There are a few glaringly obvious picks if you want someone overpowered, like Kars who essentially can't be hit if you're playing him right (low effort, not that hard to figure out), and others who are just excruciatingly bad. Not that character balancing matters much anyway when the multiplayer mode lacks rollback netcode, making it an absolute nightmare to play in the first place. There's no excuse for not including this, it's 2023.

That leaves you with All-Star Battle R's absolute dearth of single player content. Apparently, the original game had a story mode in it, but they decided to redub the game with all the voice actors from the anime, and I guess redoing the story mode was asking a bit too much of them. Did they have, like, a day to record or something? Well whatever. You get All-Star Mode, and guess what, it's awful. All-Star Mode is a haphazard collection of story relevant battles and What If scenarios sprinkled in, all of which are played with absolutely no setup, which would make them utterly confounding to anyone who hasn't absorbed all of JoJo's. To be fair, if you haven't already done that to your brain then I'm not sure why you're playing this in the first place, so maybe that's fine, but these fights are also laid out in a way that's confusing to navigate for those already initiated. Battles from the show and manga are presented out of order, so if you want to play them chronologically then you're going to be bouncing all over the place, probably while half a dozen speech bubbles pop up for characters to shout shit about the menus, which was done, I guess, for flavor. My advice to you is to turn these off immediately, as they're frequent and tend to appear over menu items and other UI elements that you actually need to look at while navigating.

The pacing and difficulty balance of All-Star mode is just as imbalanced as All-Star Battle R's roster. Almost all "story" related fights have a difficulty of 1/5, which means the opponent AI is essentially shut off. This is an ok way to learn new characters, but at the consequence of making these fights completely unengaging. To spice things up, each battle has its own conditions. These can be small things like having your meter constantly regen, or crap like starting you out with 50% health and lowered defenses. Some of the What If fights are borderline impossible without relying on purchasable modifiers to counteract some of these conditions. A lot of these battles also strip out one of All-Star Battle R's key features: assists. This is a core part of arcade and multiplayer battles, it's one of the primary mechanics of the game, but the single player mode arbitrarily removes it for all but a handful of missions.

About halfway through All-Star mode I just started to count how many missions I had left. I felt like I was playing it out of obligation. I paid my money and I like my JoJo's so I've gotta finish the game. I think that sort of mentality is a clear sign that someone is both not having fun and probably has an unhealthy connection to the material. These people are beasts, and that includes me. If you like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, just skip this one. I think the only thing that made the original game noteworthy was how expensive it eventually got, but foundationally there's just nothing to like here outside of the property it's adapting. There is a perfectly good (though similarly unbalanced) fighting game from Capcom for the PS1 and Dreamcast, and if you have to play any JoJo game, then that's the one you should be going for. Not this. Never this.

Anyway, Robert E.O. Speedwagon mains sound off in the comments.

ADD ROLLBACK NETCODE YOU IDIOTS

DO YOU WANT YOU FUCKING FIGHTER TO SELL WELL OR NOT??

I don't have too much experience with fighting games outside of Super Smash Bros, which is practically an entirely different type of fighter, but this game was pretty fun all things considered. Characters feel at least decently balanced from what I can tell and the ass ton of specific Jojo references they have in here are just great. Story mode was kinda lackluster though and no idea why the online only works half of the time.

im a fucking loser that likes the show and the games fun

I think I just expected too much honestly. The netcode is pretty bad, and not enough has meaningfully changed to keep me hooked. You'll still be fishing with your stubby normals for half the match and navigating the strange feel of the game in general, despite a couple new welcome mechanics that make it feel ever so slightly better than the original. I guess the removal of the single player's energy mechanic and the general reorganization of said mode is kinda nice, but there are still some minor similarly mobile game-esque mechanics and limited time events in other places that I would have rather seen removed as well, so it's a slightly mixed bag there as well.
That said, it's a fun afternoon or two, especially if you haven't been able to get your hands on the PS3 version prior to this release. There is a ton of love for the series and fanservice stuffed into this package. All the new characters are fun and great, I specifically loved Diego and Ghiaccio. Hopefully those season pass characters continue that trend!

Game would be a 5 with rollback and if online users wouldn't just auto combo
