waited 30 hours for the gameplay to get even remotely good. it didn’t. the only thing this game has going for it is the fact that it’s decently charming. other than that you’ll have a completely dogshit job system that’s tied to your players level for some reason rather than being it’s own separate thing, actively discouraging trying out new jobs due to the fact that grinding will be mandatory. there’s the atrociously boring combat where you’ll only ever get to use your main character, making the job system feel even worse considering you can’t actually do direct commands for party members and just hope they’ll do something beneficial. it’s so needlessly limited and i seriously can’t comprehend why there’s not even the option to control party members. the “dungeons” that make early NES rpg dungeon designs look like fun and exciting areas to explore through due to just how unfathomably boring they are. walk a straight line, occasionally choose a different pathway, rinse and repeat for the next 30+ hours. there’s little to no variety here whatsoever, and even when sped up it feels like such a slog because of how fucking boring it all is. and even more stupid shit littered throughout the game to sour the experience. this game is actually so awful it’s not even funny, it genuinely confuses me as to this game seems to be held in such high regards.

Best Fucking Mii Game.
Got Thousands of laughs playing it with my friends.

grindy rpg saved by mii shenanigans. would be better if it was just tomodachi 3 though

The chef class is so fucking cool

unironically probably in my top 3 3DS games

The moment when you boot up the game after 3+ years to see one of your toxic ex-friends as one of the main characters...

This game is just dumb fun. An RPG for babies that has enough charm and meme potential to be entertaining.

I played it for quite a bit, but I stopped playing once I got the Switch and just kinda forgot about my 3DS. That and because I also felt it was kinda longer than it needed to be. Because just when I thought I was about to beat it...It just kept going, so the novelty was wearing off for me a bit.

I would still recommend it if you have like, nothing better to play I guess, or if you need a good easy game for your little sibling. I don't know if I'll ever play it again, but if I do, it probably will be the Switch version.

a fun, lighthearted turn based rpg. haven't fully finished it but i do plan to eventually.

edit: i finally finished it! final battle was way too easy but it was a pretty cool game

I was very much surprised by this game. I expected a simple little game with a very dumbed down story, but I found the story surprisingly good and very charming. The gameplay is fun, but did suffer from its simplicity longterm. Mild spoilers about the game's progression ahead so proceed with caution

Thanks to Miitomo (RIP ;_;), I have a bunch of close friends that I "met in mii form", so this was perfect for this game. It was super fun to see us interact in the game, I shared tons of screenshots cause there was a lot of funny shit happening.
The class system (Jobs) in the game is very creative. While it does feature boring RPG staples such as Mage and Thief, it also features more extraordinary roles such as Cook, Imp, Cat and Tank.
Its biggest weakness is the simplicity of its gameplay. You can only control your own character - you have very little to no influence on the 3 other team members. It's unavoidable that they will sometimes do dumb stuff, and some Jobs are kind of bad if controlled by an AI.
This becomes especially grating in the post-game since it can get very grindy. I did beat the post-game boss but it was not very fun to get there, to be honest.

I'd give Miitopia a 4/5 - if it weren't for the ABSOLUTE BANGER of an soundtrack. I have no idea why they went so fucking hard on the soundtrack for this silly little game but they sure did. Additionally to that, the game uses pitch and speed changes in certain situations, so it really adds a lot to the games' enjoyment in my opinion.

Enjoyable, especially on switch with the Wild customization. How much you like it somewhat depends on how wacky you make your mii cast

epic jrpg on the same level as final fantasy

such a goofy concept but wow what a flawless execution. the creativity people had adding fictional characters and real life people into the game so that people could hit randomize for their npcs. the gameplay was also really great! having so many different class types made it great to change up every so often to see who worked best together

Entirely too much fun

Being able to go on a goofy journey with your friends was a blast.
The job/class options were neat, and battle mechanics (while extremely simple) felt enjoyable.
I honestly just had a ton of fun when it came to customizing outfits, weapons, catchphrases, and the like.

This game is so good that I'm not even that salty that I spent 30 dollars on a physical copy of this game only for the Switch remake with its enhanced character creation skills to be announced a couple months later.

The remake is, by far, the superior version, but the base game that's here is still really good and I'm happy that this game was able to reach a wider audience by being remade on the Switch. You're just better off playing the Switch version because the 3DS version typically runs around the same price and you'll get no added benefit from playing this version unless you really want the 3D effects for some reason.

This game is completely carried by the novelty of putting dumb fucking characters in the roles.

too simple of an RPG to not get repetitive, but still an enjoyable romp

Nothing will ever beat the joy of playing this, surrounded by my friends while we created our own miis and fought the forces of evil alongside tiny versions of our favorite artists and characters. That is the charm of Miitopia (and also Tomodachi Life), that you can be whoever you want and be friends with whoever you want. Or you can be yourself and save the world from a face-stealing spirit, that is the whole point of the game.

its no tomodachi life 2 but itll do

The real Shin Megami Tensei experience

Incredible how what's effectively high quality shovelware made a large impact on how I feel on game design and became a large inspiration

(this review has gone through multiple revisions)

A bit of a rough plot that's barely defended by the "Rule of Funny", but still awesome to have an ADVENTURE based game with your Miis for the first time.

Gameplay mechanics don't bring anything new to the table, but for what they're worth, they are fantastic! You don't control your party members aside from your starting Mii, but it feels super satisfying to land a hit on your enemy and just destroy them.

There's also a function akin to Persona and Fire Emblem where your Miis can kindle relationships that grow and level up. If you're crazy for shipping your favourite characters, especially crossover ships... I needn't say any more.

But not without a few irritating elements. The aformentioned inability to control your party members can lead to some decisions that may just hinder your chance of winning. And also, if you lose a battle or flee, you can't continue through a course like normal, you must start from the beginning.

And of course... the soundtrack is suprisingly AWESOME.

For the first Mii game with a story to follow, it's pulled off BETTER than could be expected.

Hopefully in the future we can see another story-based Mii game on Switch... with better writing.
Not asking for a compelling masterpiece, just something that just isn't as SIMPLE as Miitopia gets.

EARLY 2021 EDIT: I'm SO glad this game is getting put on Switch!!!

Maybe now if this sells well (because we all know how many obscure games find their new audience on Switch lol) we can expect some more Mii related game!

copying this from my Switch review since it's the same game, just on 3DS

ever since Tomodachi Life came to American audiences in 2014 I have been, admittedly, kind of obsessed with Mii games. this game is no exception. the fact that you can make an RPG and put in whoever you want is genuinely great. it's a bit bogged down by unfair postgame enemies and in-game achievements that feel more like busywork as you get closer to 100%ing the game, but it's genuinely a great game with one of the most killer soundtracks Nintendo has ever produced. I genuinely like this game's soundtrack more than Undertale, and that's a hard bar to clear

I will note that what you put in this game you will get out of it. I never tired of having my OCs in the game but people playing with more memey characters may tire out of the game a lot easier, it seems

AMAZING GAME, will absolutely eventually play the SW version.

A ton of fun. Didn't hold my attention all the way through to the end, but what I played was extremely substantial. Wish I could transfer my progress to the Switch version and take advantage of the expanded Mii Maker!

Such a random game for Nintendo to make but it was quite fun having an RPG with your Miis.
