Probably the best version of the original Resident Evil to date. This was a labor of love from everyone involved and it's surreal to see Capcom put so much effort into this yet not port the game to any modern platforms. Deadly Silence comes jam-packed with content, containing not only the original RE1 with its two campaigns but also a Rebirth mode that features revamped balancing, difficulty, and puzzles that take advantage of the DS's hardware. The new balancing provides more ammo and more enemies, making it a more action-heavy experience, which is different but not unwelcome. The new puzzles are all reasonably gimmicky but it is shocking how well they fit the tone of the game without feeling too out of place. There are occasional first-person knifing segments which are probably the most gimmicky aspect of the port, but still provide a surprising amount of fun and challenge. It even has a Mercenaries-style side mode which, while I didn't dive into it that much, seems to be a fun distraction for a while.

Something you'd think wouldn't have improved is the graphics, which Capcom has rather tastefully updated. 3D models have been overhauled to have better points of articulation and generally more detail, providing a moderate boost to realism but without clashing with the unchanged pre-rendered backgrounds. Speaking of presentation, it's impressive how much of RE1 remains in this port fairly uncompromised. Audio quality is naturally compressed (especially noticeable when playing with a nice pair of headphones) but sounds reasonably well most of the time, except for a stray voice line here and there. The FMVs are all here and accounted for, and while compressed to the point of ugliness (a black and white sequence early on even has unintentionally added color due to the compression!) I think it's impressive that they managed to include all of them. It's a shame, however, that the intro sequence is the censored version, which is an odd choice considering the game is still rated M and the first zombie cutscene is uncensored.

Despite the odd censorship, I think Capcom has done a very admirable job porting RE1 to the DS in what is potentially the best port of the game thus far. I'd highly recommend Deadly Silence to Resident Evil fans who need a new spin on the PS1 classic, as well as DS users who are looking for a horror experience for their classic handheld (just make sure to play on classic mode for a first-time playthrough!)

I dug this out with the intention of traveling to another country to play the co-op mode with someone I've barely had any communication with, but then I got covid and had to stay home and play it myself.

I never had a PS1, got no nostalgia, but even so this still holds up as a solid little adventure with bags of weird charm. And it's so well suited to the DS, visually, structurally, atmospherically, it feels right at home. Shame we never got 2 and 3 on here as well, this would be my ideal way to replay them.

Also it's nice that I'm actually way more familiar with the remake, as this still holds a fair bit of mystery for me. I've probably got a few months before my next chance for co-op, so I'll be slowly battering through the various modes and going for all the endings and unlocking all the cool guys until then.

Omg if you thought tank controls on a controller were bad then stay far away from this game. It’s like driving a car with your knees, so so strange.

A pretty incredible port all things considered. It came with two modes of play Original and a new Rebirth mode. Original was the exact same game as the original. Rebirth mode added a few tweaks and changes and added new DS centric puzzles and first person knife fights. Both modes are great to play. Their are times when i wanted to play the new mode and other times I just wanted to play a better version of the classic mode.

Character models were updated but still kept their look intact. Having the map always on one screen is nice for new players. Door animations can now be skipped as well making this a very smooth experiance of the original title. All the old unlockables are here plus a couple of new costumes. Capcom even added a multiplayer mode if you had two copies of the game. You could even play as the other Alpha and Bravo members in it. That is so cool. I wish I could have tried it. Over all it was an 15th anniversary celebratory port and it's honestly one of the best versions of the game.

The best version of the original Resident Evil. Multiple game modes, superb controls and visuals, they included the uncensored opening video and has no cut content from the console releases. A must play.

Arguably the best version of RE1 with stuff like a dedicated knife button and quick turn being great additions to ease into RE1's more adventure gamey roots. You do get noticeably worse looking backgrounds and FMVs than any other version, but it's not too bad on a DS screen

A fantastic port of an incredible game. Stocked with its own arranged mode with DS gimmicks as well as the original experience, alongside brilliant QoL additions such as cutscene/door skip and quickturn make this one of the best ways to play the classic that started the franchise.
Absolutely reccommended!!

Enfim, recomendo demais.

Playing a full version of Resident Evil on the go was a hard flex back then on my friend's group

We are about a fourth of the way through 2024, and so far this port of Resident Evil might be the only game I have played to completetion this year. I'm at the final stretch of getting my Bachelor's degree, so in the rare times I can actually sit down and play a game, it's typically something I can turn my brain off to while talking with friends. I have played the original Resident Evil games enough to be able run through them in my sleep, so I occasionally pop one in when I have a couple of hours to spare. However this particular version of RE1 has alluded me for a while, so I decided to give it a spin AND MAN, did I love this!

Beyond some of the more DS-specific additions, the minor tweaks Deadly Silence makes to the gameplay of Resident Evil probably makes it the best playing of any of the classic tank controlled entries.

You can do a 180° turn, the knife is bound to the left bumper and no longer takes up an inventory slot, you can reload mid-clip without having to go to the menu, you can switch auto-aim targets, and can SKIP DOOR ANIMATIONS AMD CUTSCENES! In terms of base gameplay, the is without a doubt the best classic RE games has ever played. It's so good that I'm legit angry that CAPCOM never did similar ports for RE2 or RE3.

The new Rebirth mode has a bunch of curveballs for returning fans like me. This includes stuff like new puzzles and remixed enemy encounters that now include multiple enemy variants in the same room, which never happened before! The only thing that isn't a straight upgrade (outside of the lower resolution and more compressed FMVs and backgrounds) is the music, which just sounds a bit to tinny to me.

It has always baffled me that CAPCOM hasn't attempted to make their classic entries more available. As cool as the remakes are, I don't believe they actually replace the originals (even if I think REmake is better than RE1), and people should be able to play them without having to resort to becoming a fucking nerd and setting up an emulator.

I know gamers think that just cause it's easy to set up that everyone could just emulate stuff, but I'm not gonna lie, if it wasn't for things like the PS1 Classics on the PS3, there would be no way my 12 year old ass would have gone through the effort of setting up EPSXE just to play RE1 back in 2010. Having a more convenient way for people to play older stuff is how new folks typically find classic games like these, and it's a real shame that older games are just left to languish on older hardware, which only really benefits folks selling this stuff on the second hand market to dorks with too much money to spend.

Rant aside, Deadly Silence is so good that it elevated a game that I only sorta liked enough to revisit occasionally, to one that I am itching to jump back into again! IT'S SO GOOD, DUDE!

Coming from playing the RE: Remake, this version makes you appreciate the upgrades done to REmake and the overhall done.

game is actually very loud, despite title. i have similar complaints about silent hill

Fart jokes aside (deadly but silent, y'know), a pretty good port of the original RE1. I never beat RE1 back in the day but I wanted to give it a shot because I love REmake and this version interested me because of QoL changes (transition skips, quick turn and quick knife). It really makes you appreciate REmake even more (difficulty balancing and added content mostly), but it's great on its own.

My complaints are that it's really really easy (you're showered in ink ribbons, herbs and ammo) and the caves are ugly as FUCK.

Pretty easy to recommend to anyone interested in playing the OG after REmake because the game is like 4 hours long.

Note, this is all based on a Classic mode Jill's good ending playthrough. I'll play Classic mode Chris in a bit. Don't really care to play Rebirth mode though.

Edit: classic Chris is as easy as classic Jill save the start, just has a lot more walking. Rebecca is a queen tho

The definitive version of Resident Evil 1, with gameplay mechanics lifted from future games, like quick-turning, reloading without having to empty the clip and your knife being it's own dedicated button which are nice additions alongside that, there's better models, skippable cutscenes, including doors and 60fps which lead to smoother play and animations.

The biggest selling point is the new "Rebirth" mode, which adds quite a number of changes to the core gameplay making it more action-oriented, the most major of which is the increased enemy count and variety alongside new puzzles which utilize the NDS' functions.

I'd highly recommend playing this version of RE, whether you're a newcomer to RE1 or a veteran wanting to replay it.

classic line reads and sexy costumes

…is it weird that this is my preferred port of this game? original mode only though; fuck that touch screen mode.

This is the definitive way to experience the original Resident Evil. Forget Classic REbirth on PC, this game has Classic mode and Rebirth mode. That's right, now you can play through this survival horror classic... with touch screen puzzles and combat sequences... if you want. But this version also has quick turning, quick reloading, quick knifing, quick everything. Two screens means twice the speed. The costumes are cute, the knife swiping is punishing, and sadly some of the FMVs are censored. Overall it's the second best way to live out your fantasy of being Sphere Hunter's wife.

This is one of the best ways to play the original Resident Evil! It's the original version, but on the go with improved character models and various QoL improvements. You can now quick knife á la Resident Evil 4, reload at any time in combat, and view the map in tandem with the actual gameplay. Best of all: you can skip door animations and most cutscenes, making repeat playthroughs more enjoyable.

There's also a mode called "Rebirth" which is essentially this version's take on the "Arranged" mode from Resident Evil: Director's Cut. Like that mode, key items and enemy placements are shuffled around. However, the volume of enemies is larger, enemies die more quickly, new puzzles leverage the touch screen, and there are on-rails segments where you use the touch screen to slash enemies with your knife. The latter initially seemed like a nuisance, but it won me over with more challenging enemies and a fantastic boss fight. I wouldn't recommend the new mode if this is your first time playing the original Resident Evil, but it's great fun if you've already played the game to death.

I didn't like a thing about this. Tank controls, clunky inventory management, weird first person touch screen knife combat, obtuse puzzles, general difficulty, so much of this game repelled me. It's hard to say whether I would've liked the original better, I suspect not, but regardless this janky port was so not to my taste, I regretted buying it immensely.

To me, this is the definitive way to play RE1 OG, it has all the enhancements that were also in the sequels (quick turn, your posture changing on low health etc), the OG soundtrack aaand you can touch your character! You wanna touch Jill or Chris' butt? Go ahead! You wanna touch Chris' hair or Jill's boobs? Go ahead too! Of course there is no truly defintiive RE1, as this doesnt have say, Battle Mode from Saturn, every costume from every version and so on but as far as playing RE1 goes, this is it. I tried many times on the PS1 version, PC version and hacks for PS1 attempting to fix the bad sides of the Director's Cut but it just wasn't working for me, it was hard to go to after having played 2 and 3 but DS did it the best for me, it goes to show that sometimes there is no true wrong way to play a game and it's best to seek a way and seek how you wanna play it yourself. I thought about skipping to REmake too but I didn't wanna do that, I wanted the original first, that I also wanna emphasize cuz one time I switched to Persona 3 FES instead of Portable and that wasn't so fun cuz I wanted Portable...anyway.

You can easily use melonDS to upscale it to the level of PS1 graphics, no need to worry about a tiny screen or lower than usual poly here! Only change that I think that strays away from the original a bit too much is that the knife doesn't take an inventory space anymore and you get it out by holding L just like in Resident Evil 4. I'm not crazy about this change but considering this is the only RE where you should have a knife at one point in your inventory, it saves a lot of backtracking to the item box (REmake can vouch for that for me personally) which I appreciate lol, also a speedrun advantage for those interested I'm sure

I got the best endings, first played Jill's campaign, then Chris', I did the opposite order for REmake when I played it later in the same year lol

fun to see how they did it on the DS, but quickly not so fun anymore? ya know?

Pretty good after all these years and all the new additions are pretty nice. It was an amazing foundation back then to one of my favorite genres and franchise ever and still is a fun, highly replayable game. And this is probably the best version so far, gameplay-wise.

Best version of non-remake RE1 easily. Play in Classic mode.
