A competently made roguelike that doesn't challenge you or incentivize you to try new things because the things that work are already powerful enough and you can always get them in each run. Also if I never die except at the final boss, something is wrong.

Complex tactical roguelike with many layers of interacting systems and steep difficulty.

Haven't managed to beat the game yet, but played for roughly ten hours. It was quite enjoyable at first, but the difficulty went up far too quickly. Early stages are doable, later stages feel like everything has too much HP. I doubt I ever manage to completely finish it, but I did have some fun with this game.

A complex and fun roguelite with great animation and what feels like hundreds of build options that definitely deserves more attention

The Roguelike Game I've ever played

Hit a gamebreaker and lost all momentum. Has since been patched but I've forgotten how the bloody game works in the meantime.

I shocked myself when I beat the final boss on my first run... because I'm really not THAT good at games. It kinda killed the feeling of progression the game seemed to want, but... I just kept going.

It was a really fun single run, and I'm sure the game adds a fair bit more depth with subsequent attempts, but I find it hard to press on since I've already beaten the final boss.

Crown Trick is a fairly straightforward and traditional roguelike with a cool style and some interesting twists. It has some UI and clarity issues that frustrated me somewhat -- I had an ok time with it, but there wasn't a ton beyond the art-style that stood out for me.

The characters are very expressive and the environments are varied and cool looking. It has a very saturday morning cartoon vibe, and I think it works pretty well for the game. Unfortunately much of the important information is obscured by some of the effects and environments, leading to times when you are taking damage from unclear sources or being attacked in ways that aren't obvious.

Crown Trick steps away from traditional roguelikes in its structure and a few of its mechanics. Structurally, you choose one of a few challenges to do, each of which has a unique mechanic and boss. This is novel, but doesn't have a ton of impact on the game itself. Mechanically, you can choose from a number of weapons which have different attack patterns, similar to Crypt of the Necrodancer. As you play, you also pick up familiars, which grant you two spells each, allowing you to switch up your playstyle somewhat, unfortunately most of them end up being pretty similar, reducing the impact they have.

Crown Trick is ok, but became a bit too frustrating because of the UI and presentation for me to want to continue playing. If you are a fan of the genre, it might be worth checking out for the presentation and some of the systems.

A deep and tactical Mystery Dungeon game, but talk about a genre that hasn’t come a long way since Torneko.

My only experience with rogue-like games is Skul, which was much more fluid. The turn-based combat system in this game was difficult for me to figure out and so I think the charm was lost on me. Overall, I see the appeal of the game, but I just couldn't get the hang of the gameplay.

This game is currently in the Humble Choice for September 2022, this is part of my coverage of the bundle. If you are interested in the game and it's before October 4th, 2022, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

An almost rogue-like rogue-lite.

Crown Trick is exactly what I like from both rogue-related genres. There’s a turn-based aspect, a lot more strategy than action, and a great dungeon with discoveries to be made around every corner. Crown Trick shines with its art style and the combat is great. This is more of a puzzle game than a hack and slash, as the player is given a serious number of advantages early on such as the ability to just blink away a few squares without even using a move, which also allows players to avoid damage, or use interesting strategies.

The downside is this is also a rogue-lite so expect long deep dungeon dives. I played my first run on this for almost forty minutes. I previously played and beat the first dungeon on Game Pass, and enjoyed myself both times. However, because of the number of abilities the player will have at one time, there can be a bit of analysis paralysis or over-analysis that may happen when players are presented with a problem. While it’s similar to a rogue-like, there are also forms of upgrades and progression outside of the dungeon itself, as players unlock more of the game.

Pick this up if you like turn-based rogue-lites on a grid. This is very similar to The Pit, or a bit easier and more friendly than ADOM from last year, but it’s a game I’m super thrilled to add to my library because it’s so well made, and I want to see more of the dungeons, bosses, and creations.

had fun with what i played but i feel like it doesnt get enough updates

Absolutely adored this game. So cute and fun.

Yet another very solid game that I just don't feel compelled by. It's a roguelite-roguelike, meaning the core is a classic turn-based roguelike in the oldschool style, with some modern roguelite mechanics like permanent unlocks, and it plays well on a base level and gets even better once you figure out the blink system. It feels like kind of a makeshift solution to the fact that you can't attack diagonally in this game, but it still works out and teleporting around the room to try to keep your stun combo up is good fun. The game also has a pleasant artstyle that's perhaps not amazing, but has enough of that quirky charm to be appealing.

However, there are two major problems that make me want to just give up after only four hours: lack of variety and pace. The runs feel very samey since the most deciding factor are your familiars, and there are only a few of those and many chances to pick one, so you basically always end up running with some of your favorites. There are tons of weapons, but really only the weapon type matters, and I found that I was mostly having fun with spear-type weapons, blinking and familiar skills. Wait, that leads me into a third problem I forgot to mention: doing the above is just way too easy. Enter a room, pop off a skill that damages the entire room and then wait for the enemies to walk into spear range one by one.

The second, or I guess third, problem is the speed. The game's just too damn slow for me. Slow movement, slow animations as you open chests and even slow teleportation as you use the Gungeon-style room transfer mechanic. If this had that beautiful, wonderful option from Gensou Wanderer, the one for raising the speed of everything in the game by 4X, I would've played it to completion, but when every run feels very similar and the pace is low, I just get too bored too quickly and want something else.

Did enjoy my time with it and do recommend the game to anyone who wants a classic roguelike without ASCII graphics and can take a low pace, but I'm gonna have to bail out and find something more to my tastes.

It's a neat, charming dungeon crawler, but not a whole ton of depth.
