Arcade Beat 'em ups have the issue of standing out since the gameplay can get a little monotonous. This game assuages that issue with its Dungeons & Dragons-based storyline, branching pathways, amazing graphics, and a unique gameplay system that helps differentiate it from other Beat 'em ups. The level-up mechanic is fun and makes continuing worthwhile and the character roster makes repeated playthroughs more appealing. Overall this is a really good Beat 'em up and is worth playing if you're a fan of the genre or Dungeons & Dragons.

Evolves Tower of Doom a lot which comes with pros and cons. Is a much better game but the added complexity makes it feel overwhelming without looking up how to play.

Trying to make D&D into a beat-em-up was probably the best decision in 1996, but now it just kind of feels like making an arcade game out of My Dinner with Andre. They certainly try to make the social/roleplay elements work, but it feels pretty slight, especially in comparison to the plethora of CRPGs that were out at the exact same time, so they just made it like if Golden Axe had an inventory system and a couple of fork in the road points.

I feel like every time I got close to being able to play this game with four friends, something happened. Arcades closed, friendships ended, global pandemics, just all sorts of weird stuff. In my mind I like this game a lot, but I've never really had a chance to prove it!

It's insane how much content this game had for a 90s arcade game.

Great stuff and a fun 4 player beat'em'up

was not expecting to like this game less than Tower of Doom, but some of the changes to the game i largely just found annoying. the introduction of the backdash when double pressing jump took a little getting used to, but the change in how inventory works was quite annoying compared to the first games more immediate "goes to the next available thing" whereas in this you may have to cycle through empty slots which mid-battle is a bit of a pain. by far the most annoying addition however is the inventory limit, resulting in moments where you'll see an item like a new sword on the ground, pick it up only for another item in your inventory to drop to the ground when the inventory is full. fair enough, but this creates a problem in the middle of fighting a bunch of enemies when an item drops to the ground amidst the bunch. considering the pick up item and attack button are the same, i more than once found myself rapidly picking up an item (then dropping its replacement with my full inventory) like a madman when i was just trying to attack the fuckin skeleton boys surrounding me

And after beating this game 3 times with 3 different friends, I finally realized that slowing down the game to a crawl spamming whatever magic spell is available, is in fact, peak comedy.

This is Capcoms best Beat Em Up RPG

Trying to adapt a TTRPG into an arcade beat-em-up is tricky business: it's not a genre that easily captures the breadth and depth of character customization or the sense of complete freedom and nonlinearity that draws many people to D&D. Shadow over Mystara understands this and chooses not to focus on that at all; instead, it plays up the 'teamwork' angle, with different character classes able to help each other with complementary skillsets. The cleric can immobilize enemies for a bulkier character (like the dwarf or fighter) to wail on for major damage, and magic users aren't great on their own but make excellent crowd control and are able to hit slippery bosses with ease. The result is one of the most collaborative arcade beat-em-ups out there that doesn't try to overreach but is excellent at everything it does.

The movesets are expanded significantly from the previous game, and the bread-and-butter game feel is impeccable - it feels really great to wail on a bunch of enemies with a standard combo, send them flying with a charging attack and then continue to juggle them.

I will say that the single-player experience isn't balanced particularly well - some spots will require skills that your character may not have (like an enemy who can only be damaged with magic), and there are plenty of cheap boss 'grab' attacks that drain a lot of your health if you don't have an ally nearby to knock them out of the animation. But I suppose that really is part of the game's intention. Good stuff!

Capcom's attempt to cram the breadth and depth of an RPG campaign into a 45-minute beat-'em-up is kind of wacky and lopsided, but admirably pioneering. Visually sumptuous. It really comes alive in four-person co-op, with its unique interactions and team dynamics.

Tiene un sistema de combate muy divertido y cada personaje se siente realmente único. Lo corto que es lo hace mas perfecto. El jefe final tiene movimientos imposible de esquivar que hace que tengas que gastar monedas

Amazing hybrid of a beat em up with fantasy roleplaying elements, full of interesting tools and tricks to help overcome all the crap the game throws at you. Multiple paths keep it pretty fresh, feels like I find new stuff every run I do. Steep difficulty solo, but feels a lot more manageable when you play it with a friend. Really love the presentation and variety of characters and even if you credit feed the shit out of it, it still manages to be a fun time. The controls definitely take some getting used to, but I think inputs and stuff are a fun expansion of the previous title, and it is obvious it is far more focused on aggressive play than Tower of Doom. That stupid fart cloud boss that keeps trying to eat you is a pain in the ass, though.

Get yourself a couple of friends, some cold beer, your fightsticks, a comfy couch, open up MAME and have a hell of a time

I have started playing more games again recently so that's been nice. :> I played through this with a friend on his arcade cabinet.

Like a lot of arcade games, starts off very pleasant and smooth and then at some point decides it just wants all your money. Still a very fun time with the all the systems that are in play.

There is a lot to learn about how these systems work and I feel like me and my friend still ended up never figuring out how equipment worked lol. You have three menu's to cycle through while fighting which can be pretty tough but I kinda love that.

The character differences are actually not that large but they certainly don't feel like that. They can all do most tasks but they specialize nicely. Co-op play seems very much needed though for this to actually show up. The ranged characters are great at crowd controlling while the melee ones wade in and they usually juggle characters together that way. Magic is used for dealing with large crowds too although some of the later bosses with their strange hitboxes also seemed to need that.

The later encounters and bosses get increasingly rude lol. Lots of one hit kills from the final boss too. It's kind funny but if I was spending money, I wouldn't.

The magic effects rule and the art in general is quite nice. The store UI rules so much even if the stores are mainly just useful for health. The voice clips are very charming as well.
