It feels useless to reiterate why this game fumbled so hard. Cortana becoming a space dictator just feels weird. The guardians feel like an afterthought and the campaign was extremely underwhelming. ALSO, why have a bunch of characters that weren't present in previous games show up here with little context. I don't mind a bit of trans-media storytelling but at least make it sensible for someone who can't read (me.)
I'm not gonna talk about the multiplayer (I kinda liked it, I never had an issue with the microtransactions when I was playing since I didn't have disposable income back then.)

Easily the worst Halo, in my opinion. The story is nonsense, the map design and enemy variety are lackluster and boring, and it feels nothing like a Halo game. Fireteam Osiris ("MOVE!") is insufferable, especially Locke.
The gameplay isn't bad, but its a complete departure from the past games. If it were a sci-fi shooter unrelated to Halo, it wouldn't be half-bad. But instead, its a giant misstep after their poor first attempt at the franchise with Halo 4.

The gunplay is so smooth and fun, movement feels great. The multiplayer is really enjoyable minus the loot boxes, but it's not Halo.
The Halo charm isn't there, the core identity isn't there. The Promethians are so bullet-spongey and not fun to fight. The story is all over the place, you barely play as the cheif. The guns don't feel like halo guns. It's just not Halo.

Horribly over-hated game. I honestly think this might be tied with Halo 2 for the best gun play in the entire series, and that is partially due to the amazing sound design and feel the guns have. For the first time in a Halo game, the basic assault rifle is actually a fun and viable weapon to use against other spartans. It feels like more than any other halo game, you can use any weapon you want and get good results from them which is significantly more interesting than everyone just using the battle rifle with an occasional power weapon. The advanced mobility is also pretty well done too, even if it isn't quite as good as something like Titan fall. I still think Halo 2 is better over all, but this games multiplayer and gameplay did not deserve all the hate it got.
