Really liked the idea and was fun, but the fact everyone had to buy the DLC to play it together just meant I could never play the DLC, so stopped playing it pretty fast.

probably would be fun if i wasnt ass at it

All in all, it’s a really good game if you want to take the time to learn it. Buy it when it’s on sale!

An interesting and unique take on running a space corporation.

Offworld Trading Company reminds me of Civilization a bit, which makes sense as one of the lead designers of Civilization IV worked on this title and it shows. You play a space corporation, putting down your base, building different outposts, across the map, and trying to maximize your profits so you can buy out your opponents and that’s it. The game features limitations in the number of buildings players can create, which will challenge players to maximize what they use to gather resources and process them. Those claims add a lot of strategy to the game.

However, I’m not sure how this game is for longevity. The end of a game involves buying out the majority ownership of all the other companies, which appears to be the only victory condition. So you need to rake in a ton of profit, there’s only a handful of ways to do this. The end game feels interesting, but also like something would become monotonous because it’s mostly a waiting game to maximize profits. The idea though is fresh, and each of the corporations has unique benefits.

Pick this up if you like the Galactic Civilizations III from a couple of months ago, HumanKind from the beginning of this year, or really any Civilization-based game. It does feel more like a board game than those titles, but the smaller scale and more direct competition makes players focus more on interaction.

God I suck at this game, but it's still loads of fun.

ENGLISH VERSION BELOW:

A strategy game on Mars where it's more about money than attacks on your opponents. Sounds like a good idea, actually. But implementation has not been as successful. I often enjoyed "Offworld Trading Company", but the CPU is often much too strong, or much too weak. I would also like to mention the complexity here. Games from Stardock often have the problem that they are a little hard to understand. "Galactic Civilizations III" was a good game for me, but at the beginning it was much too complicated. With "OTC", on the other hand, you manage to explain the mechanics well, but some functions I didn't understand until today. The stocks, for instance. The main goal is to be more or less the only company on Mars. You have to be careful to buy the enemy's shares in order to get rid of them. But so do your opponents. But how the whole thing works with the individual shares I do not know quite. But what bothered me extremely, that the lands and territories that can be claimed are limited. It brings in a certain tactical depth, but it annoys in the long run. Nevertheless, I liked "OTC" overall. Buying and selling individual resources such as water or oxygen is a nice idea and well implemented. The campaign keeps you at the bar for a long time and entertains you for a good 10 hours. In addition, the various political groups are varied.

I think Offworld Trading Company is a really clever strategy game. I don't know that it is, because like so many other people I simply could not develop any decent level of skill. Did I lose to clever strategy? Or did I lose to very basic ideas that are obfuscated to newer players? I will simply never know.

It's definetly an innovative idea.
However I don't think the game expains it's mechanisms (like shares) too well.
The end of games also feels anticlimactic and abrupt to me.
That said, I have only played skirmish and can't judge the campaign.

Probably fun for some but not for me.

Bounced off it. (Got it for free on EGS though, so...)

Smartly designed and well produced. But I feel like the game-- intentionally or otherwise-- does a poor job of keeping you informed on what the rival companies are doing, so every round ends up feeling too much like solitaire. "Here I am, just doing my own thing over here."

I got bored with it a bit too quickly.
