+ Fast pace levels
+ Music is stellar
+ Game has personality / charm
~ A lot of gimmicky levels
~ Feels like there is more to the story
~ Rayman's world is rather creepy and weird
- Music is very glitchy / wont loop properly
- All bosses feel more like obstacles
- Later levels lack a lot of color / mostly dark
- Collecting all the lums is tedious due to placement.

The definitive port of Rayman 2. This game is incredible, with such great level design, music, control, and especially incredible atmosphere. After replaying this, it's definitely a favorite of mine. This game feels like a perfect transition from 5th gen 3D platformers to 6th gen.
I originally played the PS2 version called "Rayman 2: Revolution" and I thought it was great, as I said here in my review a couple of years ago. https://www.backloggd.com/u/Ryanthecollector/review/194779/
But looking back it does have a lot of issues compared to The Great Escape. It feels pretty bloated and a lot of the extra content is unnecessary, although I don't think all of it is bad. Looking at this port though, sometimes simpler is better, why change an already great game? The dreamcast port is perfect, it feels so much more cohesive, and the game has such a great flow. Rayman 2 is something I will always come back to, it's such a great 3D platformer that I think deserves its recognition as one of the genres best.

I played this game as a child and remembered it being awesome. Now getting back to it at older age, I fully expected the great game from childhood being just a product of nostalgia, but it just rocked as much as it did back then, maybe even better since I went for the Dreamcast version over Playstation this time.
Rayman 2 is one of those early 3D platformers starring an iconic character from a beloved 2D platformer, now with just another dimension added. I would say Rayman did just as well with the transition as Mario. Of course, there is some jankiness to the controls, especially camera since you control it with the shoulder buttons, but thankfully it never becomes a hindrance. Only in the last level did I feel like I had to fight against stiff controls while flying with the rocket, but I got used to it pretty quickly since the hitboxes themselves were actually quite forgiving and turning surprisingly quick. Rayman 2 also suffers from that unintended creepiness some of the early 3D games had, with dead stares and some jarring environments.
The story is pretty straightforward and simplistic, only there to give you some goals to achieve. That paired with an easy difficulty clearly shows this game was designed for children to play and it serves it purpose wonderfully. Only thing I found annoying was the fact that you could skip any other cutscene in the game with a press of a button except the teensy cutscene that tells if you're allowed to progress or not every once in a while. I don't know why the only repeating cutscene in the game isn't skippable, but it's not a long one so I could stomach sitting through it every time.
Overall, it's a good game that in my opinion, deserves every bit of nostalgia you can muster up for a game from your childhood.

I can tell this was a very impressive influential platformer when it came out. It is a lot different than its contemporaries Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, instead of the open 3D worlds it sticks to the linear style but shifted to 3D. mechanically it still holds up today, as well as a N64 era platformer can. Rayman feels good and minus some clipping/perspective issues the jumping and hovering feel good. The combat was also a surprise, it was fun dodging enemy blasts while shooting rocket fist energy at them.
The presentation was probably awesome back then but obviously doesn’t hold up super well, though it’s still charming. There is a large variety of levels which keeps things fresh, flying levels, non stop running stages, and sliding all are unique but come with their own set of issues in a modern lens. Controls and checkpoint issues can drive you a bit crazy but I still have to give it credit because I can see the vision and how much future games would take from this game.

Sad to say this one disappointed me. It was fun and short, which was nice, but the levels never really amazed. Each one felt like it needed a weird vehicle section which largely marred the whole experience as very few were that enjoyable. Collectibles were much less interesting to find compared to Redemption (possibly unfair comparison) and the ones in the vehicle sections were often so easy to miss and lead to me having to die on purpose just so I could retry them. Didn't end up 100%ing this one.
The more linear style of progression compared to most other 3D platformers I've played was pretty refreshing. Not to mention the great graphics, smooth controls and a surprisingly dark plot made this a fun ride to go through.
I will say tho that certain levels, specifically the godforsaken slides, were pretty annoying.

A good port, but overrated due to dreamcast hype and word of mouth from people that consider only graphics(and even then, the PC version can be prettier with HD texture mod).
Questionable visual changes like the overall brighter vibe, the completely different and more generic world map inspired by crash bandicoot(which imo kills a big part of the mysterious vibe that made rayman 2 so special in the first place) and also a few really dumb gameplay decisions like adding an extra enemy that sends bombs at the end of the already very long first level just to confuse the player or replacing the enemies with weaker ones in the already short and easy first sanctuary make it inferior to the PC and even N64 versions.
Plus I suspect there may be something wrong with the hitboxes in this port, I've replayed this game like twenty times and I never had much problem with the swamp level, but the time I played the dreamcast it somehow became the hardest level of the game.
