pretty fun for a spongebob game, saw this on the 3ds tiles and was like "oh damn I DID play this" then a few memories came flooding back

Got this for my birthday one year for the DS. Worst gift of my life.

I give SpongeBob's Truth or Square a 4!

okay platformer, nothing special

Dont remember much about this game, just know that it was 3rd person and i had a hard time.

why are the levels so long and boring, is it cause the whole game is only like 3 hours long?

Underrated as fuck, it's a very short and simple experience compared to more grandoise games like Battle for Bikini Bottom and Cosmic Shake (latter I've yet to play)

Suficiente para contentar a un chavalín.

A good platformer that works on the same basis as the Movie game or Battle for Bikini Bottom, but ultimately tries to do too much in quite linear and easy levels that it feels too boring.

This game takes the gameplay from Battle for Bikini Bottom and The Spongebob movie game and doesn't do much new or interesting with it. It was an okay platformer that at least held my interest until the end but didn't seem to innovate or improve much between console generations. There was also a bit of clunkiness to the gameplay that would sometimes result in unfair deaths but honestly the game was pretty easy so I had a ton of lives to spare. I would only recommend this game to fans of Spongebob games like the ones I mentioned who are purely in it for nostalgia.

it doesn’t matter how niche the game might be huh they got it on here

This game is the most nostalgic spongebob game (BFBB is probably second) the game itself is a decent platformer but for the nostalgia value it gets a higher score.

If you recall my review on the Wii/Xbox 360 version, you'll probably know I wasn't particularly impressed by it.

Despite being developed by Heavy Iron Studios who gave us both Battle for Bikini Bottom and The Movie Game, it essentially just felt like a soulless and pale game with barely any of the charm that made those two titles good.

Japanese developers Altron were put in charge of this DS version and to my surprise, they've managed to do a far better job than what Heavy Iron did.

It's a charmingly fun platformer with the whole memory storyline working pretty well on the DS making it easy to pick up and play. Like most DS titles I've covered it's got some touchscreen/microphone stuff thrown into the mix, though it's mostly every now and then and you can still do SpongeBob's attacks via the buttons.

There's also a couple of minigames thrown into the mix with some of them being kinda fun and others not so much.

Some of these sounds effects though makes me chuckle a lot.

Played this on a PSP emulator and thought it was lame. Felt more like a fan game than an official one. Maybe I'll get back to it some day, but right now it's just...so lame.

Heavy Iron finishes their Spongebob trilogy with a stinker that has none of the quality of their first two

Haven't played in like 10 years but its similar to atlantis squarepantis on DS i think

As an end to Heavy Iron's Spongebob games, this one is kinda disappointing.

The game was originally called Sponegbob Squarepants: Happiness Squared but the TV special Truth or Square was being shown on TV so they changed it.

The music itself isn't anything interesting because it is taken from Battle for Bikini Bottom and the movie game.

It is a shame this is the last decent Spongebob game because after this game it all went downhill. Until the remake of Battle for Bikini Bottom in 2020 and The Cosmic Shake in 2023.

Vaguely based on the 10th anniversary mini-movie, Truth or Square is the third (and final) SpongeBob video game to be developed by Heavy Iron Studios.

Truth or Square is pretty much another game like Battle for Bikini Bottom; a 3D platformer where you fight robots.
Weirdly enough, this game never got a PlayStation console release despite the developer's previous game (WALL-E) getting one on both PS2 and PS3.
Part of me wants this game to get a remaster alongside the Movie game but I feel like, since you can play the 360 version on Xbox One and Series, it's probably more likely that the PSP version will get a release on PS+.
I still firmly believe we're getting a SpongeBob Movie game remaster next year for its 20th.

I can't really talk much about the gameplay since it's pretty much the same as BFBB, but I'm gonna be honest I prefer the story of this game to the story of the episode it's based on.

My theory is that this game was commissioned as a general "10th Anniversary" videogame until the special was brought up, and was rushed in order to complete it by the time it aired.

The plot of the special follows a handful of the cast as they get stuck in the Krusty Krab as it celebrates its anniversary, and end up reminiscing about events that we're introduced to in the special, meaning there's no real clip show elements.
In the game, however, SpongeBob is throwing a party for the anniversary and forgets where he placed the secret formula, so his friends try to jog his memory by referencing actual episodes.

Each level is based on an episode of the show, but it sometimes features multiple references, like a level about the episode Graveyard Shift also features elements from the Movie, and I like that.

The game is fine, and is a fun way to spend a few hours. I might even try getting 100% someday.
There's a few hiccups, though, like I'm not sure where checkpoints are; I assumed they were these boxes that close when you're near them but after a rather difficult section near the end of the game I walked past one as it closed, died, and had to redo that difficult section.

There's also these paths in which SpongeBob uses his tongue to glide on Jellyfish Jam paths. You can't hit any enemies on these paths so you have to dodge them which is nigh impossible when there's a huge wall of them in front of you.
One last issue is the fact that the health pickups usually spawn behind enemies so you have to jump past them in order to get health, but they'll hit you while you're trying to get it so it's basically pointless.
The controls are a bit stiff, too, but I don't know if that's my controller or the game itself.
Props for adding Classic Controller support!

Each level features three "Happy Items" (general items that help "jog his memory", you get one for completing the level), three Kids Meals and a sleeping Patrick, but I'm not sure what they unlock since I used a cheat code to unlock all the bonus stuff.

It's your general flair with these games; concept art and cutscenes.
Much like Disney's Up game (also by Heavy Iron), the concept art is all videos and not a single slideshow.

Each level contains two unlockable video types; concept art, and screenshots from the show with frames lazily slapped on top of them.
You get three different videos per level, so it's either two concept art pieces and one screenshot video, or the other way around.

Also I thought I'd mention the fact that this game features a mix of music from Battle for Bikini Bottom and some music from the show itself. So, yes, this is another great video game soundtrack (The Jellyfish Fields music from BFBB slaps!).

If you have an Xbox, and you find this game for cheap, I recommend it.
Who knows, if I find it on Xbox for cheap I might replay it to completion.

as a dude who unlock every single health, furniture upgrades, get all happiness objects in the game and even do damageless bosses/mini-bosses challenge without any save state on psp version, i can proudly say - this version sucks

first of all as i do actually damageless challenge i just need to say it - you can't move your camera during the boss fights and it's really annoying
second of all - this game it's just boring. as usual spongebob games don't make your challenges any hard (except for movie racing levels challenges) but you got the original level with the vibes with it. in this game you need to collect 3 objects (collectibles), which 2 of them you got by doing really easy challenges and last one you get for ending the level. as you can see i started in September 10th and finish it today but i can do that clearly sooner that you can see. it just too boring to keep it up with it and you easily drop the game after like first 4 levels.

i didn't play the xbox360/ps3 versions and i can't say barely if they are the same but for me PSP version is just 3/5.

It's okay but uninteresting in comparison to Battle for Bikini Bottom and The Movie Game, feels like filler.

very fun underrated as heck part of the spongebob game series (specifically the home console version)

This game is really good in terms of execution but amazing in concept

My only gripe is that the soundtrack uses re-used music, but even then the re-used songs are really nice and a good way to feel happy

pretty weak, feels like the leftover scraps of the previous spongebob games. the levels aren't interesting (nor original), but surprisingly the cutscene dialogue is pretty alright. however, spongebob never shuts the fuck up. this game would probably move up half a star if spongebob didn't feel the need to open his mouth in reaction to the player attacking, jumping, walking, breathing. it's fine

Heavy Iron really said, "This is our last SpongeBob game, so we're gonna remind you constantly that we made Battle for Bikini Bottom."

It's not bad; it's just a very standard platformer.

spongebob except he gets high on acid and lives in a fever dream
