The story for this game was goofy, edgy, and way over the top, just like all of its character designs. Platinum Games really can't be beat when it comes to 3D beat-em-ups like this, and when they are left to their own devices to create an IP they make magic like this. It's a shame that it feels like this game just never had a chance. The competitive free-for-all styled multiplayer felt very reminiscent of Power Stone, a large 3D arena filled with characters throwing stuff around. The unique weapon mechanics per character made this pretty large cast seem very fleshed out and interesting. The soundtrack is also a bunch of hip-hop music from various artists, and its something I often listen to outside of the game. I often go back to this one, and its very sad to see this is likely all that this and Mad World are likely all we will get from this series. Big Bull will always be one of my favorite video game characters.

This game didn't deserve to be treated as dirty as it was

A hidden gem for me. Released cheap as hell and more than paid that back in the multiplayer. Too bad you won't get much use out of that part here a good 9 years later. Can still play with bots though and if you're lucky you might have some friends to take some shots with. I still pop this in occasionally, bots or not the soundtrack really helps pump up the action combined with some neat gimmicks like shifting stages and singling out individual characters in the match and placing a bounty on their head. Each match quickly dissolves into chaos and I love all of it.

Probably one of Platinum's weaker titles that isn't a licensed property.

TIME FOR SOME ACTION
CAN'T GET NO SATISFACTION

The combat system is pretty good, but the single player campaign became a bit repetitive after a while. Unfortunately I couldn't play the multiplayer because the servers are basically empty nowadays.

This soundtrack will never leave my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Absolutely stellar gameplay, very flamboyant in how it portrays itself. The color palette in this game is nice when it wasn't an earth tone or greyscale. The story itself isn't anything too crazy and the characters are pretty one dimensional but their flair makes up for MOST of what they lack. the story progression system is really interesting designed but its weird to see filler in the main missions when the game already has side missions. I should probably lower my rating just a little bit for the horrendous game design choices they made in certain missions but honestly the game is pretty cool when I'm not developing trauma from a shitty mission. Can't say much about the online at all since the lobbies are all dead

One of the best OSTs of all time. The progenitor of a sub-genre that has literally had a 90% failure rate at maintaining players/profitability, itself being part of that 90%.

I miss this game dearly, unfortunately this is a game that can never be played properly again since the playerbase was only active for a couple of months after launch and it's locked to old console hardware so no community can be rebuilt. The single player mode is an afterthought and not very good.

Multiplayer mode was fun as hell however especially for the first and only attempt at this genre of game. It sucks it died so quickly due to poor marketing. I would love a sequel of this game or at least a PC port, although this game would be in dire need of a balance/bugfix patch since it was left in a poorly balanced state with a lot of meta exploits that made the experience less fun when people abused them.

If only this game had a community to play with

Servers were dead by the time I got to this but Id much rather Platinum go back their roots here than whatever the hell theyre doing with Bayonetta and their new Origins spinoff.

Beautiful sequel to a beautiful game...well sort of a sequel, the loss of multiplayer is unfortunate and you can tell the game was meant for it but outside of that the single player is really damn good even if it feels a bit simple at times without the multiplayer, this is a really fun Third Person Action with awesome style, excellent characters (who Overwatch may or may not have lifted) and a kickass OST, I love this game

Yo can we get this ported with good Netcode? Thanks, B.

This game's soundtrack is legendary.

Extremely good soundtrack, don't pretend otherwise.

Name that game:
1) Huge multiplayer focus
2) Lots of colorful characters with charismatic designs
3) Incredible asses

If you guessed Overwatch, then you're wrong and suck. It's Anarchy Reigns (Max Anarchy in Japan, for my brothers and sisters keeping it real out there). It also has a Battle Royale mode, so what I'm trying to say here is that this game was so ahead of it's time that nobody can properly understand it.

Also some of the best voice acting from a gen with great voice acting.

A true hidden gem of game, has some of the most fun mini games and multiplayers.
Jack is a literal himbo and I love him

This is my favorite game of all time. It’s a multiplayer, free for all, beat em up made by Platinum. It is pretty much the antithesis of any multiplayer game out right now. Instead of a live service game with micro transactions, it is one whole product with a couple extra gimmick modes and an extra character as cheap DLC (That character is Bayonetta). Instead of being made and balanced for competitive esports, it’s a battle royale that feels more like a game of Mario Party due to the sheer amount of random things that can happen. You may be comboing some poor guy into oblivion, but the next moment you may be interrupted by the debris of a plane crash falling out of the sky, or you might need to “team up” with everyone else to take down a kraken attacking the whole stage. Also the characters are great. Best cast of characters of any game I’ve ever played. Not a single loser in the bunch. Only downside is that no one actually plays it anymore so any matches in the future will be against a bunch of bots.

REMINISCE OF THE TIMES OF OLD
NEVER THOUGHT THAT I'D BE IN A WARZONE

Wicked sick character design and soundtrack in a pretty fun party game. It's criminal that Sega won't put this on PC. My Day 1 Bayonetta DLC code is still valid for another year.

Classic Platinum Games. I love the hammy over the top story and the beat-em-up campaign. It wasn't too different from a stripped down Dynasty Warriors without objectives.

Anarchy Reigns is, at its heart, a fighting game. Which is unfortunate because there were no online games available to join. I really only have a taste of the fighting game mechanics from the single-player campaign. That was enough.

I love the combos and other fighting game mechanics. It's a fun game.

The majority of the game is fine but the game's short and the story sucks ass.

The singular month this game had a community was the most fun I've ever had playing multi-player. The dumb chaotic bullshit, the killer ost, and talking shit while playing death ball are memories I will cherish until my death. Even the single player had some charm to itself. The game needs a PC port goddamit.

I miss this game dearly, unfortunately this is a game that can never be played properly again since the playerbase was only active for a couple of months after launch and it's locked to old console hardware so no community can be rebuilt. The single player mode is an afterthought and not very good.

At the very least this game has some life left through the excellent soundtrack which is available on Spotify.

Jogava online e morria toda hora, muito divertido mas o meu skill issue me impossibilitava de matar mais de 4 players por partida. Os eventos no mapa sempre eram fodas, o do Kraken é o meu favorito

This is the perfect multiplayer brawler. Too bad the meta resulted in doing kara-cancel TOD juggle loops.
I think a modern release with updated balance and some new content could make this game a world-wide smash hit. Too bad it will NEVER HAPPEN.

Let me set the scene and explain what this game is.
A third person action game ala Bayonetta but you're in these HUGE open city arenas. When I say huge, I mean wide and tall. The verticality on some of these maps is kinda ridiculous. The maps are so large you'll see portals or conveyor belt launchers littered throughout the map to cross major distances. The game looks very "PS3/X360" textures wise but the art team did a great job adding splashes of colors on characters. The game has style. The audio- oh my lord. The soundtrack will go down in history. The characters all sound amazing. The game is also very quotable with the characters saying some crazy corny stuff during battle. (it's hype.)

In regards to how playing the game works, you have a special meter (required to use your character's heavy weapon buttons), a comeback meter, a lock-on, an item slot, and a perk slot. Abilities included a guard, throw, an AOE I-frame attack that costed health to use, jump, sprint, etc.
Getting attacked by multiple players boosted your comeback meter.

The story mode has a "hero vs dark" setup where you can either follow the story of Jack from MadWorld or the story of Leo. Finishing both paths unlocks the final chapter. Story mode is alright, being the best way to unlock the roster of characters and the story is serviceable. You go about the open zones doing side quests and boss fights to progress the story.

Online though, up to 16 players can run around, pick up buffs/items, trying to score the most KOs before time runs out. 1 on 1 fights felt like a traditional fighting game. Throws beat blocking, you can get stunned from being shield broken, whiff punishing is very strong. Combos looked like "Light, Delayed Light, Light, Heavy (launcher) > Jump RT+Light,Light,Light" (spending meter on using your weapon to cash out at the end.)

To keep things from getting stale, random events called "Action Trigger Events" would happen like the map being carpet bombed by fighter jets or an out of control semi truck with flame throwers would start barreling down the city streets. It felt like playing street hockey when suddenly a car was driving down, everyone had to move the nets and stuff out of the way before continuing the game. Silly, but it works. It can separate you from an attacker giving you a chance to run and hide!

If two players pop the comeback mode and try to hit each other, it results in a button mashing QTE contest. It would show the button on screen to mash, before switching to another button. So not only did you have to mash, you had to switch which button you were mashing on the fly. VERY FUN.

Some modes were kinda flat, like Dog Fight where everyone fights using hijacked helicopters (This was DLC too, so good luck finding people to play this with you.) Or football/deathball. (A lot of reviews think some characters are slower than other characters making the gamemode unbalanced, this is untrue. locking on will make you speed up to catch up to your target. This is a basic game mechanic. Idk why I keep seeing complaints about this.)
Tag Battle is a cool idea, you and a friend team up against the other players. If both teammates grab someone at the same time, you'd do a cool team attack!
Co-op Survival was surprisingly challenging! A lot of fun with friends who know how to play well.

I love this game. This is Platinum and Sega premium.

fun game, gotta replay the single player campaign
