This game is so slept on, especially when compared to Mario Kart 64. Unlike MK64, this game has an actual single-player campaign that's worthwhile to boot, hidden collectibles to find, challenging bosses, and its battle mode is just as solid as MK64's. It was even ahead of its time with the different vehicle types, which Sonic All Stars later became known for. DKR is the definitive cart racer for the 64 IMO.
Relentlessly fun. Though I forgot how short the tracks can be, every other aspect of this game is filled to the brim with enthusiasm. Wise's compositions for this will forever have a spot in my brain. I would love, love, love, love for Nintendo to bring this back in some form, as long as they preserve what made it so unique from other racing games at the time.
I have more nostalgia for this one than Mario Kart 64, even if I know it's not as good, and I'm sure it's aged very poorly. Such fond memories of this game. The atmosphere was really weird, I loved exploring the hub area, having planes was great, the cast was a bunch of goobers. It had that same "scariness" that the movie Fantasia did to little kid me, if that makes sense to anyone.
Collectibles? Story? Bosses? Planes? Boats? on my mario kart game? YES, nowadays this might not look like much but back at the 64 era, it was way ahead of its time. Even though not all ideas on this game landed perfectly, it was real impressive the amount of things they did with it. I did enjoy mario kart 64 more back in the day but looking back at it, this game was the superior one. Some really good music too. Rare was way too good back then.
Definitely one of the best kart racers due to how fun the single player adventure mode is. The track design, while not as memorable as Mario Kart’s, is a lot of fun and has a lot of variety due to the 3 different vehicle types. Another unique thing about this game is how the power ups work, there aren’t a lot of them, but you collect different power ups from different colored balloons instead of getting them at random, and you can upgrade your power ups by collecting multiple of the same type, which adds a layer of strategy. The single player is also way more difficult than you’d expect, but it’s never unfair and really gives you an incentive to learn the tracks and make use of every power up. There’s not a lot of issues I have with this game, but it could definitely be better.
