While a short ride, Kirby's Dream Land was still a fun, sweet venture. Although I wouldn't say its a mind blowing experience, its still a fun game to play, and the music will always be there to remind you of the good times you had with this nice game.

Despite the semi-low rating, it's still a fun game and very cute. It can get a bit repetitive though, even when it's a very short game. I may come back one day to beat hard mode.

Delightful game. Absolutely adorable main character animated with charm and designed for maximum fun and whimsy. Goes on for just as long as it needs to, with memorable bosses and a seriously difficult Hard Mode. Short but sweet.

suuuuper short but a pretty fun game

First Kirby game and it definitely feels like it. It's cute and super short, only about 4 levels. Very easy to beat. It's nice to go back to every so often.

just a really solid platformer on the go

dang they werent lying. that hard mode can FART

While very simple and literally takes under 30 minutes to complete a single playthrough, its a very cute romp that provides some simple joy from front to back. It has almost none of what makes the Kirby franchise so unique and special because that simply didn't exist until the second game, and if you can deal with that, I think it's absolutely worth giving this game your afternoon.

It's pretty fun to look back on the very first Kirby game and see how much of the series lay within its genesis, in particular the game having Game Boy shmup levels that are a clear starting point to the multitude of later shooter levels Kirby will have in his games. There's the real cute animations between every level which a multitude of games like Kirby's Adventure and Kirby 64 would use, plus the fact it has a lively and vibrant soundtrack that's quite nice for an early Game Boy game.

None of this really saves Kirby's Dream Land from feeling like a boring game. The problem isn't just that it is easy, plenty of easy games are fun, but the methods in which Dream Land is easy often make it actively unengaging. There isn't enough consideration to Kirby's great flight abilities (which are stronger here than most), so a lot of levels can be beaten by mashing the jump button and ocassionally stopping to slightly descend for a flying enemy that tracks you. And even when you can't do that, the game's platforming is a bit overly simplistic for Kirby's already very simple moveset. While obviously he lacks the copy abilities, the inability to even slide is disappointing as that'd add a very casual option to allow more for the player to do. Simple can work, I enjoyed Super Mario Bros. 1 again recently, but it really needs something to challenge the most basic stuff for me because otherwise it's not doing enough. It's telling the most deaths I had were something I'd also complain about, is the background of Level 4 blends into the stage to me and so I died multiple times thinking I was landning on level but actually went through a bottomless pit. I do understand this was meant to be an extremely beginner friendly platformer and I can see it working as a kid's first game well enough, but I've always preferred platformers more engaging than this.

The bosses are also pretty lackluster, Kracko was my favorite and felt like the one with the most gameplay to it, King Dedede is shockingly boring here due to how casual he is to avoid yet how long it can take to get hits in if you are playing safely. I do appreciate the game having a second playthrough hard mode option and the vast array of difficulty options for the time is great, but the fact I need to get through the game twice before getting the difficulty adjustments is a bummer, and the actual playthrough I had gave me little desire to go through it a second time. An interesting start for the Kirby franchise, but Kirby's Avalanche feels like the truest start of the series.

if this game wasn't so damn cute yall would fuckin hate it

First Kirby game a cute little game

Kirby blew in one day on a spring breeze

The first Kirby game is short, easy (if you're not playing Extra, and after that you can fine-tune the difficulty to your liking), and lacking in feature, but it had plenty of imagination with a memorable world characters and music, and room to be even better in the future.

Cute. The songs in this game are all iconic Kirby tunes, and the levels and bosses are cool. It's less than an hour long so it's pretty easy to go back to it anytime. What holds this back is that Kirby as a series has definitely improved significantly once the copy powers were introduced in Kirby's Adventure but hey this game is still very cute and fun.

A short, but sweet experience in which Kirby lacks his trademark copy abilities. Not challenging in the slightest, unless you play Extra Mode.

Kirby consistently proves his inferiority

The whole time I was playing this, this was going through my mind: "Why am I not playing Kirby Super Star instead?" Really has not aged well. Fortunately there are many better and newer Kirby titles out there.

Short and sweet. A great first game for the Kirby franchise.

I loved it! I actually preferred this one over Kirby's Adventure and I'm not sure why. My only problem with this game is it's really easy when you start out but other than that I love it! I think the short time that this game has works because if you're on a road trip, here's a Kirby game you can play in hand held and it's one you can beat on the road since it's short and simple! It also has unique stages with cool enemies. Another thing I really liked is that the boss fight is just Dedede instead of him and another bigger boss fight. That's really all I have to say about it. It's just a lot of fun and a nice short game!

GRADE
A-

cute, short, and sweet. not much to say about it - there's some great music here, some fun levels, and good boss fights. was definitely my go-to when the 3DS had its software drought early in its life cycle

The most basic Kirby experience. Definitely feels worse after playing a game with Kirby's copy abilities.

Kirby's first game. Short but sweet.

Kirby's Dreamland is a great start to the legacy of consistently fun and simple Kirby games. This game gets some flak for being too short and simple, but in my opinion, that is a strength of the game.

Unlike the rest of Kirby's games, there are no copy abilities in Kirby's Dreamland. This means that all of the combat revolves around inhaling and spitting out enemies, and I'm all here for it. This combat system makes Kirby's Dreamland feel like the combination of a platformer and a shoot-em-up. You can float, but you're relatively slow and defenseless while doing so. If you have something in your mouth, your platforming abilities are limited, since you can no longer float. The core gameplay is all about constantly switching between fleeing with superior platforming ability, and giving up your platforming ability for self defense, and it works very well.

This constantly shifting gameplay is put to extra good use in the boss fights. Every boss has a few attacks that create something for you to inhale, and once you inhale it, it becomes a tense game of waiting for an opportunity to spit it back at the boss and gain your superior movement back.

Kirby's Dreamland is a very short game, much to it's benefit. If it were too long, the extremely basic mechanics would get boring. This length also makes the game very easy to recommend; who doesn't have a little under an hour to see where the Kirby series originated? Kirby's Dreamland is a solid, fun game that I can see myself impulsively replaying for the heck of it in the near future.

i have a very fond memory of me playing this at a furniture store as a kid

They did white erasure on kirby

This game is very easy to replay since it’s so short.

A short, cute game. Is it just me or is the final boss genuinely difficult? Maybe I just have the hand-eye coordination of an infant.
