I don't like fighting games. I don't like spending the time to learn them, especially when they tend to get patched and hard work to master something can all turn to ash. Nidhogg doesn't have any of that. It's you, one other player, and a sword for each person. Go nuts, it says, and I do! I scream and yell and my friends scream and yell back. The pure simplicity of this game makes it an undeniable couch classic.
There was nothing quite like it when it came out. Now there's Nidhogg 2, which is very good and very ugly. I love the minimal pixelated designs, the soundtrack by Daedalus, and the simple gameplay that you can get good at, but anyone at any skill level can pick up a controller and mess you up as well. It holds up well even today.
just sort of perfect, you know? i remember playing it at trade events for years before it eventually came out and that gave it this real storied feel that i haven't had from a game in a while, that feeling of a friend you trust grabbing you and saying "yo you GOTTA play this". that's something you cant recapture really but it's very precious to me, and so, too, is this game.
Really fun fighting / fencing 1 v 1 game really minimalist in both visuals and controls it's super fun to play. Once you get used to the controls it's really fun and unique to play pretty much does everything it sets out to do the only thing I would want more is extra levels but the ones that are there seem to offer a lot of replay-ability.
There's also a single player to help you get used to the controls that's pretty funny to run through.
