i mean. it's fine i guess i just don't really like it a whole lot

The presentation in this game is incredible. The stages were all so beautiful and super attacks were flashy and impressive. The Pokémon themselves could look a bit off-putting or off model to fit in the aesthetic, but overall the game looks great.

I'm a big fan of the variety of Pokémon they chose to. It would have been so easy to just put in the bipedal creatures, but they added in mons like Chandelure or Suicune for some truly diverse fighting styles. Not that the bipedal pokémon aren't unique at all, every Pokémon has a wide arsenal of moves that all feel different. I was only playing this as the week free trial, but if I had the full game I'd love to get to know and use all the Pokémon in the roster.

The missions encourage you to use different Pokémon and supports, or try out different fighting styles (such as using more grabs), while providing some neat aesthetic rewards.

Training mode is pretty well fleshed out. You've got standard tutorials, but also combo examples for every single character, so if there's a Pokémon you're interested in, it's really easy to get to grips with some basics of them instead of blindly mashing buttons in practice.

As for the fighting itself, the phase mechanic is definitely a great way to set it apart from other fighters, and I love it in theory, how it makes you adapt to two completely different fighting styles. In practice it did feel like it happened a bit too much, especially in field mode. It can also break combos in duel phase which got annoying. I definitely got used to the flow of battles, but something just felt a bit off by how it was implemented. Not that I'm sure what alternative I'd suggest.

Overall a fantastic Pokémon spinoff, and if there was ever a sequel I'd definitely buy it.

For a pokemon fighting game, Pokken has really surpassed my expectations. Probably even as a fighting game in general.

Pokken tournament is a game that manages to keep itself different from any other fighting game you'd find, while not getting too much off track or being to confusing to understand.

Some of the things that stood out for me are:
The colorful and shiny effects and visuals, that work oddly well for the pocket monsters brawling it in varied stages.
The customizable options offered through the cheering skills and support sets, which is probably both more entertaining and more fluidly done that the majority of fighting games i've seen/played.
The surprisingly well-planned tutorial, that introduces both the different tools that every character has, AND some of the hit confirms and potential combos that can be done with each of them - which is almost ground breaking.
The unique, and varied roster and abilities of each character, making matchups and gameplay intriguing and constantly experimental.

My only "complaint" is how the Phase mechanic is done; the field phase is very reminiscent of the problematic arena fighting style, which is attempted to be used in order to spice up the neutral game. this is a good idea, but it can definitely be improve upon and optimized for a more traditional playstyle.

Tl;dr An extremely creative and very fun fighting game, which is extremely underplayed, and deserves to maintain a more major role in the fgc, or at least, serve as an inspiration for other fighting games in some places.

Surprised me how in depth this game can be with character combos and supports. This is hard to play with a friend on the same console though.

very very cool but got old quickly (played the demo and the week-long trial on switch)

If you play suicune you can bugger right off

Not a pokemon fan but this was ight

Pretty cool game, wish it was just the 2D Fighter phase though, the swapping from 2D to 3D is just plain goofy.

demo'd this game a while back
it's aight
the funny frog is in it (based)

Remember Pokken Tournament?

Well here it is again with 5-7 ish more characters

The best upgrade to a switch port

To me, this game feels like it had a lot of potential. A Pokemon fighting game? Sign me up. But I signed a contract with the devil when I got this game.

It looks nice enough, but that's basically it. The fighting system feels like it was made by combining two different ideas, and that never goes well. From my own experience, I'm never able to get a combo going before the game decides I'm done and switches modes forcing a fullscreen wallbounce. And from what else I've seen, better players can only get one combo before the game decides they're done, switching modes.

The field phase is your typical arena fighter, somehow without the slight amount of depth other ones have. You only have two options, zoning, or rushing the enemy. It feels like this was catered to zoning characters, since some fields are oval length, allowing them to play keepaway as much as they want, especially since the field phase is 8 way movement, and not a full 360 degrees of the stick. It's hard to maneuver around zoner projectiles without getting hit unless you picked a character that uses a move that specifically can counter the strat.

The duel phase in my opinion is slightly more enjoyable because it resembles a traditional fighting game. But it only resembles one. As stated above, you can only get around one combo off before the game boots you back to field mode to play Frogger with a hitbox, but even Frogger is better than field phase.

If you want an easy fighting game to get you into the genre, pick up Granblue Versus, at least that game has depth despite its simplicity.

Finally. Empoleon is getting some recognition

the 2d/3d phase concept was interesting but awful in execution

weird looking pokemon but the roster pics are good

Really fun game. Shift changes are annoying but can be fixed. I wish there was more support for this game

It has Blaziken, so it’s automatically good.

Where is Greninja tho

Beat the main campaign in a day. Precious little else to do in this game.

My bias here shows blantly. A pokemon FG!??! Basically the perfect game. Combat is fun (directed by tekken team), the roster surprisingly unique (Chandelure, suicune, empoleon, Weavile stand out) and graphically it's impressive. I would have liked more content for singleplayer though, even if i could never forget the matches with Dimitri during middle school

¿Posiblemente el mejor Arena Fighter más técnico e interesante jamás hecho? Probablemente.

Pokkén could have been a big thing. Has some cool ideas tbh.

its like smash for pokemon, solid game
