I'm enjoying what I'm playing so far. This is still in early access as of writing. The music and art direction are very reminiscent of Symphony of the Night and it does it right. This is an actually proper Metroidvania type of game.

This game got me to google "Record of Lodoss War" in 2021 and I think that's kind of fucked up

I did not expect this game to be a canonical sequel to the 90's OVA and a good one at that.

Really fun metroidvania with a banger of a soundtrack.

The only problem with this game is that it's too dang short

A very good Metroidvania that evokes Symphony of the Night harder than any game I can think of. Drop-dead gorgeous pixel art, a great soundtrack, and some very unique mechanics make for a delightful ~6 hour journey. My biggest complaint is that it's tied to an anime I've never watched so the story is kinda nonsense, but that's more on me than the game.

One of the weirdest difficulty curves I've ever seen in a video game. It's not hard in the first place, but I've never played a game where its systems are made so that it's about 20 times easier to die to random mobs and stage hazards than it is to bosses.
Fine enough metroidvania otherwise, basically a trimmed-down SotN.

On balance I prefer Touhou Luna Nights, but this is really fantastic and Team Ladybug kicks ass.

Some of the power-up ideas in this game are brilliant and the Ikaruga-esque combat style of element-swapping to absorb damage and gain back MP is fun and makes for some excellent boss designs.

The arrow puzzles are a little off-putting, though -- not because they're particularly bad (other than one section late in the game that's mandatory), but because they kinda detract from the action-centric feel of the game. I appreciate trying to find a way to incorporate Deedlit's archery skills, but maybe have the bows do more with their arrows based on the bow type (a few bows fire more arrows or use homing arrows as examples). Players should be encouraged to use the bow, but aside from the mandatory puzzles or optional ones, there's no real need to use the bow.

The game's a little on the short side and enemies are a mixed bag, ranging from complete pushovers to absolutely obnoxious depending on their placement in rooms (looking at you, Mummy Masters alongside those flying gargoyles with both of you immune to opposite elements). For the most part though, enemies are just a very poor-paying XP obstacle on your way to bosses.

I won't speak on the boss design, other than to say that the difficulty range is all over the place, but I still approve of them for the most part. There's some really fun ideas at play in there and I would liked to have seen a bit more gameplay length to maybe offer a few more creative boss ideas on top of what was already there. Some moves are shared between bosses, but that didn't really bother me.

Overall, the game is fun but very short -- I clocked about 7.5 hours with nearly all rooms explored. Definitely worth checking out at least once but if Metroidvanias aren't your thing, consider waiting for a sale -- it's a solid one, but it's not a must-buy for your average gamer who just wants to check out a random given game.

Luna Nights é melhor, mas ainda é um bom jogo

Good Game.
Interesting story.

I'm coming to this game after having completed Lunar Nights and it was a little startling at first how similar the two games seem to be. This game ultimately introduces concepts both gameplay and story-wise that make it a unique and enjoyable experience. It's easy, short, and could potentially be a neat introduction to the Lodoss series. I did have to knock its score down a little however due to the game crashin around 5 times during my play which was frustrating.

What if Luna Nights but without a strong set of central mechanics and their creative applications, impeccable style and slapping music? Well, still not too bad actually, just not very memorable. But if you're somehow still into the Record of Lodoss War during the third decade of XXI century? Wow you must be floored by this.

No más fresco que el de Touhou pero se juega bien rico

I heard "Lodoss" name somewhere but I can't remember lol. Seems like a legend IP. Also knowing this IP originally an RPG game (or anime maybe?) and then this one is their first metroidvania game actually got my interest. Especially the story itself looks like a love letter to older fans and surprisingly hinting some sequel or new series. The ending is quite touchy though.

Very short game but pretty solid "castlevania" style on it. Impressed by how small game size is and has perfect classic pixel style. Probably because the dev using their internal game engine and very optimized for this type of game. You can use close and long range (bow) weapon, but bow I think is so overpowered and you gonna use it like A LOT for boss battle. Most of puzzle also require bow. Maybe because Deedlit is an elf and usually elf's specialty is using bow. You also helped by 2 spirits : wind and fire. This is the game's main mechanic. Very interesting and has unique use case. Not only your attack will imbued with that element, both have special skill. Wind can absorb wind damage, used for gliding to avoid spiky trap or enemy skill. Fire can absorb fire damage, walk on lava, and longer sliding. This mechanic very attached to the game, most boss battle required you to switch both spirits frequently and that's very fun! Also spirit has 3 level, the higher the stronger your damage is. At level 3, it can regen your HP. But their level can reduced if you get hit. Can't see playtime, maybe around ~6 hours. Pretty solid metroidvania game. If you are "Record of Lodoss" fan then playing this is a must. This makes me want to play Castlevania for real (I haven't play one lol).

Great castlevania game, though a little short.

The game, while different in key mechanics, is essentially Touhou: Luna Nights again. Which is absolutely fine, because I finished Luna Nights loving it and wanting more. However, I got 96% map completion in this game in under 6 hours, so now this game is leaving me wanting more too! Well played, Team Ladybug! Well played!

Beautiful game, wonderful soundtrack, feels great to play.

However I did finish this with 99% map completion in about 5 hours (no guides or outside help). Very very short.

like Symphony of the Night without the guff. Never found out what a Lodoss is though

its just better luna nights but from a franchise i have not heard of
i dont hate it by any stretch im just done with metroidvanias

Not as good as Touhou Luna Nights, but still a great looking little Metroidvania.

Needs to push the envelope further, enemies are so simple. But I had a good time

What a surprise! Really feels like a throwback to old Castlevania days. Great music, tight gameplay, and a story I can't follow because I'm an idiot.

It's a tad short, I believe I clocked in around 5.5 hours to clear it. Also, it's very easy. I think I died twice on one boss and never died again. The overhead swinging weapons are just way too good. Magic is also OP as hell.

But still, the tight gameplay and lovely visuals elevate it above other games in the genre for me. While short, I appreciate that sometimes. In and out in a weekend. Good stuff.

Fun, short metroidvania based on the Lodoss War series. The combat is quite nice, and you need to take advantage of enemy weaknesses more often than not. Quite a lot of weapons to try, and the bow along with the magic give even more variety to the fights. Exploration wise it was okay, it's pretty linear and has a quite low number of required exploration skills, and I'm not very fond of the map design. The pixel art is pretty great, and the game has several really cute and cool animations. Overall it's a decent game for a weekend, but there are better games in the genre.

It wasn't bad, but it had a hard time staying interesting. The ability swapping mechanic is interesting, but the bosses are kind of one-dimensional and get a little boring after a while.

A solid, if rather short, Metroidvania that wears its Castlevania inspirations very much on its sleeve. It doesn't reach the heights of, say, Symphony of the Night but is a very decent effort nonetheless.

I don't know much about Record of Lodoss War beyond knowing who a few of the characters are. I imagine if you are a fan of the franchise this must be fanservice heaven for you. For me, the story was sorta nonsense and the game makes no effort to onboard players who are not familiar with the franchise, but it's also very easily ignored and like most Metroidvanias, the exploration takes precedence.

The pixel art is beautiful with fluidly animated and detailed spritework and a retro aesthetic (complete with low-quality voiced clips for hitting Level 3 on the spirit mechanic) makes it seem like a game that could have been on the Saturn or PS1. The music was decent, not spectacular, but it got the job done.

It's a bit on the easy side and also feels fairly linear, though the element swap mechanic is certainly fun, the movement is good and the boss fights are neat spectacles.

Overall, not the best in the genre, but well worth a look, especially if you have Gamepass.

I liked Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, it is a solid Metroidvania that hews pretty closely to the Castlevania style and doesn't overstay it's welcome.

The pixel art in this game is fantastic. Tons of animation for every character and the backgrounds are gorgeous. You can see that they spent a bit less budget on the generic enemies, as opposed to the main/supporting characters, but that is to be expected.
I also vaguely remember the anime and seeing the characters rendered here is definitely nostalgic.

Deedlit is fun to control, and becomes very versatile after a few upgrades. I found the game itself to run very slow and feel floaty, I don't know if it was a bug or a design choice, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment too much despite feeling pretty bad.
Combat is dynamic and cool, if easy. There is an ikaruga-style polarity system that also functions as a regeneration mechanic. It is unique and once I got the hang of it was very fun to use to my advantage.
The boss fights are big, flashy set pieces and can be pretty challenging, but for the most part the regeneration and spells in the game make them trivial. Regular enemies are a disappointment, however, with limited attacks and not much challenge throughout the game.

Like Deedlit, my memory of this world and characters has a dreamlike quality, and the story worked for me, despite being essentially nonsense. We need an excuse to see all these characters again (and fight them), and this works as well as anything.

Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a fast, fun Metroidvania in a year of strong entries in the genre. Worth playing through if you like this kind of game, but especially if you have vague memories of the anime from when you were like 13.
