The ship mechanics, visuals, and team aspect of this game work really well!

But... the lack of any kind of progression system, restarting every time you play, and shallow content holds this game back from being amazing. It's fun when you have other people to play with and you're all experiencing it for the first time, but then it gets stale.

The perfect sandbox with friends to form some amazing 'water cooler' stories. The amount of laughs we've had from stupid crashes, vomiting on each other and screwing over a massive galleon with a small ship is incredible.

The regular content updates have provided a solid foundation of a progression system nad you can recognise easily those who have played longer and those who haven't.

If you want to seek treasure and glory with friends, then pick up Gamepass for a few pounds and give it a go!

Literally the best pirate game there is.

Great game, most of the tall tales are really fun to do and playing music is great. The combat is weird, it doesn't sound like a lot of thought was put into it and it becomes irritating very fast.

awful by yourself, absurd amounts of fun with your friends. it’s so good to see Rare back, doing what Rare does.

muy divertido con amigos y voice chat, si eso ni lo compres

Funny pirate simulator, very entertaining.

i have screamed at my friends way too much over this game its just the pirate way

Started out rough and bare bones, but it’s turned into something really special with friends. You kinda have to make your own fun, and that might scare some away but I love my time in it

It has some charm while playing alone but you need friends to really have a good time with this one

This game really is great.
Since release, Rare has done a very good job of adding new events and features, and they plan on doing so in the next few years as well. For Free.
I see why people think the price tag is high for this game but one must also see what they get for the price.

Edit:
Two years later I must revise the main part of that review. The content updates in the last year were lacklustre at best. Barely any original content, mostly recycling old missions and additions to the new MTX store "the Pirate Emporium". The amount of sell out this game has gotten is incredibly sad.
Besides some questionable decisions in its community management, Rare has lost my goodwill in the team. I do not recommend the game anymore.

Very exciting gameplay, and certainly worth the first few hours of playthrough with friends! I would've rated this game a star higher if it had a better way to save your progress, and if it gave you a goal to work towards.

It's a dollar via Games Pass trial and I've already gotten more than my .99 cents worth.

Tough to rate this one as I only ever played with strangers, which really seems to hamstring how much enjoyment you can get out of this. I got through a few quests but realized I would only get further if some friends joined me. It does seem very fun when everyone's working together. Maybe some day?

UPDATE: I finally played with my friends, and the results were mixed. At times when the whole crew was working in tandem to sail and hunt for buried treasure I had a lot of fun, and there were moments in the game that had us just laughing our butts off- watching my crewmates run around drunk and puke all over each other while I steered the ship being a personal favorite. Unfortunately for a game that's been out for years and has received constant updates since then, this was still glitchy as hell, which killed our momentum several times. I'm guessing that's the last I'll play of Sea of Thieves, the 3 star rating doesn't change.

Fun with friends and does have some fun aspects within the game. Although there are some open gaps when it comes to overall structure.

i havent played much of it but when i did i enjoyed it, its usually not very fun if youre playing alone tho

Greeaat pirate framework sorely in need of RPG mechanics, interesting quests, connective narrative tissue, or all of the above.

Seriously, someone take this and make a solid solo pirate exploration game.

its hard to say whether or not this game is good. what the game wants you to do is an endless list of chores that are a boring slog to get through. But, if you can get some friends together and make your own fun its pretty enjoyable. sinking other ships and laughing as their hard work goes up in flames is honestly brilliant. i cant tell if that means the game is good or i just love bullying people through the medium of games. 2/10

Very fun with friends, but that's all. It has some great ideas but it feels quite hollow.

Al igual que No Man's Sky, este juego parece tener el espíritu y nada alrededor para sostenerlo.
Gran agua, sí señor.

Tried this game for a second time after they released the Seasonal Pass. Although I love the concept of the game, and wasted lots of hours, being a solo player means my experience varied from pleasant to frustrating. While I'd help other players every chance I got, in return I'd be shot on sight by other players. Since they have no intention of making it more friendly to players like me, I decided to drop this game.

Graphics are nice and it's fun with friends... for about 30 minutes until you realize just how shallow this game is.
