One of my favorite games when I was a kid was Bomberman 64, so I was pretty excited when Bomberman R was announced and even got it at launch in 2017... and then never played it until recently... Oh well...
Anyway, I finally played the game, clearing the (surprisingly charming and challenging) story mode. If you've ever played a classic Bomberman game (like the ones on the NES/SNES), then you know what to expect.
Overall, I'd say it's a fine game, fun but nothing particularly mindblowing. I'd mostly recommend it if you're already a fan of the franchise or want to know what it's about.
As a final note, I didn't try the multiplayer modes so I can't comment on their quality.

The voice acting in this game, White specifically, is among the worst I've ever heard in a game. Especially when you compare it to Puyo Puyo Tetris, another Switch launch title that also just so happens to be a mid budget puzzle game, the voice acting in that is top of the line. That aside, this games weird. Overall, id say its pretty mediocre. The visuals are pretty ugly, and not only that but nothing pops out and there were multiple times I just didn't see obstacles or enemies. Gameplay wise, its fine, its Bomberman. This is the first Bomberman game I’ve played, but I get the idea that this isn’t particularly different or innovative on the formula, but its still nice to see that Konami hasn't sentenced it to death just yet. SPEAKING OF WHICH, the absolute graveyard of Konami costumes in this game is so depressing. Metal Gear, Castlevania, Silent Hill, Tokimeki Memorial (please localize Forever With You (@108) ). Its cool fan service, but I cant tell whats up with Konami anymore. Like, they kept releasing free updates for this game for like 3 years, but why do they care so much about this particular game and none of there other series? Also, I tried also doing the free “Planet Bomberman” DLC, and I got up to mission 8, and its just completely busted. Enemies just keep spawning until you cant even take 3 steps without getting hit or the kids you have to save getting hit. I kept having to restart the whole mission and eventually accidentally hit the give up button and it erased all my progress on the world. So not even bothering fixing that. Overall, cool that they released a Bomberman game, could have been alot better though (Music is really good though).
This review contains spoilers
as a bomberman fan, this game was highly disappointing
it had a lot of hype going for it before launch, since it was the first proper bomberman game we got since 2011
but ig all of that fell flat cuz no one talked about the game at least a week after launch, and it's clear why
the game has this generic platformer feel, that is probably because of the unity engine
the isometric view can really get in your way sometimes, feels like a confusing maze most of the time unless it's actually top-down
i also had some trouble with bomb placement, half of the time the blast would get delayed really late and enemies could sometimes clip right through them without being phased at all
online battles on Switch were atrocious as well, always had lag during any battle
it was somewhat (?) fixed with the PS4/Xbox One/Steam re-release (which i had the misfortune of pre-ordering the Steam version) and by fixed i mean barely
the characters aren't that good either
I'm not expecting god-tier stories and characters but goddamn if you're gonna give life to the bombermen and put them in a full-fledged story at least do it somewhat right
these are some of the most annoying characters with the most repetitive and boring tropes EVER
seriously, they all do the same "big annoying loud pushy family" shit throughout the entire game with little to no changes or development at all so you're just stuck with their shit
even Bomberman Live was better then this game and that was an Xbox Live Arcade game
overall this game is painfully mediocre, and as a revival of the Bomberman series, is really lazy :(
glad Super Bomberman R Online fixed nearly all of these issues gameplay wise :))

The first console Bomberman game after Hudson got bought out by Konami, and it's not bad. The single player campaign is alright with a few horrible spots, especially with the bosses that just take forever to defeat. I personally did like the between-level cutscenes, though I can understand why people would hate them. Multiplayer Bomberman is still as great as ever, and, unlike in R Online, it can be played offline. Unlocking everything does require a lot of grinding for gems, which are also used for continues in an odd feature that seems more suited for F2P games. Still had some fun with this, though.
This was a launch title for the Nintendo Switch that fails to capture the fun of previous games in the series and fails to capitalize in offering features that could use the advantage of modern hardware. The single player mode offers a simple story and decent levels but the design itself is nothing to write home about and some of the boss battles are downright broken (I had to rely on sheer luck for some of them in order to beat the bosses).
Not the best Bomberman game out there, that's for sure.
