I kind of wish TOEM had a bit more to say and show, but I was still pretty taken in by its relaxing atmosphere. Snapping pictures at your own pace is pretty satisfying across the varied black and white environments and while the puzzles don't require too much effort to solve, that's not really the point - it's about the journey and people you meet along the way
Strong 3.5, just was a bit lacking in the actual photography department for me. Small diorama areas mean it’s usually impossible to get interesting wide shots. I kept wishing I could swap lenses too. However, the quests and puzzle-tasks were overall a good mix, and the writing was genuinely quite funny overall. Also very very cute art, although the texture resolution on the Switch was kind of disappointing for what seems like it should be quite a visually undemanding game. Overall very well worth a play and I’m very interested in what the folks behind it do next.
What is TOEM?
Chill photo-taking missions in a goofy Paper Mario-esque world.
Who made TOEM? When did TOEM release?
An independent Swedish studio called Something We Made, this is their first full game. Released September 2021 for PC/Switch/PS5.
Why should you play TOEM?
Cozy locations, lots of wonderful, soothing background music, and little encapsulated moments of joy with unique characters.
Where does TOEM fail?
Not much creativity or challenge with the photo missions despite the possibilities, for the most part it is simply a game of point and shoot.
How would you rate it?
On a scale of Pass/Meh/Fine/Cool/Play It!...

Suprisingly the game's not that focused on the photography with it being more of a vehicle to show you these little busy worlds. Reminds me of Where's Wally books in the way that it's these big complicated places with tons of things going on but looking into it you can see all these small, individual scenarios with individual people and being able to explore an environment like that is really cool. The game's also genuinely sweet and endearing, it's funny and has a subtle relatability that keeps the cuteness from feeling insincere.
Really enjoyed it, gg

Charming and slight, TOEM never quite soars, though it is consistently pleasant throughout. By design the puzzles never evolve beyond simple, pleasing diversions, small pitstops on your journey up the mountain. With thin characters and relatively shallow interactions it never quite reaches the heights of something like A Simple Hike, but it's an amusing enough way to spend a few hours.

A charming indie game about taking photos. The art style is unique and the soundtrack is delightful. It's a short one (only about 3-4 hours), which is fine, just something to be aware of going in.
Some of the harder challenges can be a bit cryptic, and there were times where I was just going back and fourth across the level unsure what I was missing or supposed to be looking for.
Overall, I had a really good time with Toem and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of indies or unique games.

A short, but ever charming adventure where you take photos to fulfill quests on a journey across different regions. All of the characters you meet are funny and quirky, and the requests are equally entertaining. The game has a very low-key vibe, allowing you to take pictures of whatever you want, and only requiring you to complete some of them before moving to the next area. I would have loved to see a few more mechanics added with the camera to spice up the pictures you can take, but the game's length and quickfire burst of new interactions aid in its foundation not growing old too quickly. Also, I think one of the achievements is bugged, but otherwise, it's a fantastic adventure that I'm very happy I dove in on.

It's not the deepest or most groundbreaking game, but it's a very nice experience and it's over before it becomes repetitive, which I personally really appreciate.

What a lovely, lovely little game. It's a simple puzzle game about taking pictures and helping people on your way to see the Toem, a journey your grandparent underwent when they were young and now it's your turn.
I did everything in the game in about 4 hours, but I don't really know why. The last few things were kind of a big PITA and they added nothing at all to the game, so I'd say this is a thing that is best played to the end rather than to completion. Play as much as you want, do the tasks you want to do or find along the way to get to the next town, and just enjoy being in it.
