if i had written this review when the game came out i probably would have given it a 7 or an 8 and gone on about how this game is a great breath of fresh air that was needed for this franchise. while i agree that a game like this was needed before nintendo was fully ready to jump back into classic mario party with superstars this game is quite hard to come back to.
the boards are very shallow loops and there are only 4 of them which is the least out of any console mario party game. most of them have pretty simple or lame mechanics and none rival some of the greatest on n64 and gamecube. the side modes are also quite shit with the river survival mode overstaying its welcome and the rhythm mode being way too shallow. this game isn't terrible and its worth playing if its the only thing you have but just like i don't know buy superstars. its a way better time on the same console

Some of the most unique minigames that take full advantage of the controls
Many of these minigames have wibbly-wobbly controls, but it actual works in this one, and the ones that don't have everyone struggling with it, not just you
Characters have a unique system where they come with a personal dice, making a bit of extra strategy with who you pick. You can even get additional dice midgame to expand your choices, but can lead to just steamrolling/getting steamrolled from the armada that someone has on their team.
The biggest crux of this game is the maps, they are HORRENDOUS, arguably only 1 map is even remotely enjoyable. You are often screwed over by being stuck in RNG hell or begging the game to hand you a Golden Pipe so you can just get a star.
Great party game, definitely one to consider at the family cookout :)

It's a decent enough return to form, but not much more than that. There are only 4 boards and none of them are particularly good. Plus, a lot of the new mechanics are neat, but they're really unbalanced and lead to games taking way longer than needed. IMO, they should've focused more on improving the core gameplay instead of the side modes people will play once and never touch again. Also, online Mario Party is cool, but it should've been in the game at launch rather than an unceremonious update 2 years later. On the bright side, this might be my favorite collection of minigames in the series. I don't think there's a single bad one here.
Omg there is barely any strategy in this.
Between the very limited board, in both mechanics, design and number of board, how ridiculously easy it is to grab a star in this, how long and tedious the game feels to play and the minigames who overtake the entire thing, there is barely any reason to play the board game mode. Its just too random and lacking.
But idk its still fun and tense. The minigames are fine. Racing to get the star is fine. Its decently engaging...but thats it really
I barely have anything to say really. Its just extremely ok and nothing else.
