A few things holding this back from true greatness, but still remains a pretty exceptional kart racer. It's a shame that its drift is so finnicky for precise play, because mechanically the thing is close to perfection - beyond satisfying to pop off perfect turbo boosts in quick succession, and it works essentially as intended for casual racing. But in a game that emphasizes its own (fair and richly rewarding) difficulty, reliable inputs are crucial - which are hindered doubly so due to this also having maybe the world's most delayed jump that will fail you at least 50% of the time. The tracks are just phenomenal though, catered sharply to the game's physics/mechanics - the only two tracks in the entire roster that are anything less than amazing are Cortex Castle and Oxide Station (can't believe there's so much love for those two considering how slapdash and awkward they feel to play). Their art style, too, is pristine. Plus, as is the case with the rest of Crash's recent fare, this feels like a God's honest love letter to the franchise. Though the crystal challenges are the same type of horrible, not fun extra content as - say - the Challenge of the Gods in the early God of War games. Also microtransactions.
Not as good as the original.
Walls suck up your speed instead of bouncing you off
Getting hit slows you down too much and also the weapon balancing is terrible.
Blue Fire while nice for single player and time trails destroys any sensable meta for multiplayer. Could have been amazing if they paid attention to the little things that made the original so great as a multiplayer game.
A good racing games's meta is about everybody wanting to take first place. This game is about the lower ranks fighting each other while the first place drives away. The meta is so messy and the more I think about it the less I can believe how bad they messed this up.
There is two options:
If you want the best player to win:
Make a no weapons race
If you want to make hype races:
Balance the game around everybody Vs. First Place with First Place changing frequently.
This game archives neither

Very technical and challenging kart racer for the pros.
The wumpa coin rewards could use a bump up for those who prefer playing single player only.
Hard difficulty is insanely god-level hard (could be skill issue).
Wumpa store is very invasive and in your face.
Would prefer a different approach to unlocking everything.

Nitro Fueled is, at least to me, the single best kart racer of all time. The original CTR was already a pretty special game, all due to its very unique mix of racing and platforming and the sheer mechanical depth it has; all while delivering on being a celebration of Crash. This made me very worried when its remake got announced, and especially when it was revealed that Beenox, an Activision studio which had done nothing remarkable before, would be the main developers of the game.
Those worries quickly faded as soon as I started my first lap in Crash Cove and immediately realized that not only had they managed to replicate Crash Team Racing - they'd made it better.
From a content standpoint, the improvements are obvious. The 18 character roster from the original game was expanded to a massive 56 playable characters, putting back into the spotlight completely obscure characters nobody expected to ever see again. Tracks is a similar story, as the game has every CTR track remade, plus all the Crash Nitro Kart tracks remade, plus 8 original tracks that were delivered with updates.
In terms of mechanics, they have also been expanded. The core of CTR is still there in a more polished form, while adding to them by turning some lesser known techniques from the original game into more explicit game mechanics. There's also the character and kart customization, alongside being able to choose any playstyle for any character so that all of them were competitively viable.
The only real shame about this game is that it's looking like it'll forever be stuck to 30FPS, as it never received a PC port. It's a rock-solid 30FPS with very good motion blur to mask it, but it's undeniable a higher framerate would've made the experience even better.

I've softened up on this game a little since 2019, but I still think it falls into a lot of modern game trappings that ruin what could've been something way more definitive and longlasting, plus I dunno... I think the core gameplay and therefore the game it's based on are great and all, but I still find the ravenousness around them to be a little overwhelming. It's a good game, but I'd still say it's not the greatest kart racer of all time like many will try to convince you.
A PC re-release nowadays with some online bugs fixed and the FPS unlocked would still be great, but given that we're still not getting one for Crash Team Rumble, I'll say it's never coming and it's a missed opportunity. Settled for emulation and a 60FPS code instead, but it's really dumb that I have to in 2023 for a franchise that has had multiple releases on PC over the past 5 years.

If you don't think this is the best Kart racer of all time then you haven't played it. It actually is just that simple. RIDICULOUS ROSTER. RIDICULOUS NUMBER OF TRACKS. Awesome single player, best side content of any kart racer and arguably any game. Its just so god damn rewarding man. Only gripes are the online is a bit stinky and god I wish it was on PC.
So much fun, and only got better as time went on, with new characters and maps being constantly added. Wish the game was still getting updates, or at least a 60fps patch for PS5 (Or better yet, come to PC!).
Had such a blast getting the platinum on this game, the Oxide trails kicked my ass, but it was a fun kicking. The dev times will never happen however.
Online is so fun, but got so annoying when it come to waiting. There was nothing worse than flying through an online match and finding out everyone was bots because people had left, because let me tell you now, online is hard.
Hope to see this level of updates & love given to Crash Team Rumble.
