I had a lot of fun with this game as a kid and I return to it every now and again. I loved the Sonic and Shadow levels. The Tails and Eggman levels were alright. I never was a fan of the Knuckles and Rouge levels though. I spent most of my time on this game in the Chao Garden though trying to get myself an all S rank chaos Chao. I never got it but it was a fun time.
A great game chock-full of a variety of content, but with some big flaws that prevent it from being a classic. My favorite Sonic game after Sonic 2.
On the plus side, the number of stages, plus the 5 missions for each stage, plus the rating system, plus the chao garden means there's a ton of single player content. The Sonic and Shadow levels are for the most part peak 3D sonic, and I enjoyed most of the Knuckles and Rouge levels as well. The Tails/Robotnik levels are forgettable but not terrible. Raising chao is oddly addicting
For the drawback, first I have to mention the camera. This game has worse camera issues than Super Mario 64, and it had half a decade to improve on what SM64 did. Although most of the time the issues occur in areas that don't really hamper you, they really hurt the ability to explore the levels and figure out a path to a good score.
The other major drawback is that the levels near the end (Mad Space, Crazy Gadget, etc.) have some really frustrating sections, they are challenging for the wrong reasons (issues with controls/camera/gimmicks as opposed to requiring platforming skill or puzzle solving)

I think this game is an improvement on everything the first game did besides the actual gameplay itself. The art style is the same as the first game but way more stylized and colorful which is exactly how I picture sonic as a franchise. One of my favorite things about the adventure games is that every character had their own genre of music. But in SA2 this leaked into the levels, so each level theme was made to fit the character then the stage. It really put you in the shoes of the character you were playing as.
The story is almost the best in the series in my opinion and shadow the hedgehog is an amazing antihero in every way shape and form. Everyone in the story is super in character, yet they all act realistically to serious moments (well as realistic as a blue hedgehog on the GameCube can get). That last scene on the ark is the most the series has ever made me feel something.
Now the gameplay is where problems arise. There's the speed levels, mech levels, and treasure hunting levels. Thew speed levels are definitely the best part of the game as they're fast, reward skillful play, and are replayable. The mech levels are slow and clunky, but they can sometimes be satisfying when you chain a bunch of targets together. The worst thing this game has to offer are the treasure hunting levels. There emerald pieces are randomly placed, the radar is horrible, and the stages are huge. These levels can last so long if you dont know what you're doing and it drags the experience down too much.
So yeah this game is very special to me and to many but it fundamentally has issues and if i only truly like 1/3 of the gameplay i can only vouche for the game so much before i start to deny things that are just true. I still love the game though.

I really hope they come back to this format one day because they had something special here. Great story, all the three different styles of gameplay are a good deal of fun (only being held back by some lackluster level design particularly in the Dark campaign), and it controls very well even if it takes a little while to get used to.
Built from the same engine as its predecessor, Adventure 2 made its way jam packed with the equal formula of diversifying gameplay styles into a more linear narrative with dank, edgy and so cheesy it's good vibe tale of good and evil goes to space and Knuckles.
The added score system ties itself into the three seperate styles of gameplay in different ways but generally in how you perform in stages by doing small tricks, chaining comboes, time bonuses. It feels awesome when you nick a good chunk of points, but can be pretty demotivating when you get low ranks.
On replays I really enjoy trying to go for good ranks and aestetically Sonic Adventure 2 feels like a very arcade authentic game of grabbing good scores while the story mode itself isn't particulary long either. It's well paced and very dynamic.
As for completion and getting all the emblems now that is another story, this can easily rack up the gameplay time for another 60-70 hours of completing all the challenges for emblems, as well as going into the tamagotchi inspired chao garden of pretty insane depth and mundane, but oddly addictive grinding.
I still think Sonic Adventure 2 has the best and most addictive/rewarding ranking system in the series and while there are a short few couple of stages that are borderline awful, the great ones stands as some of the best in the franchise and the Sonic/Shadow stages are a pure delight of thrill and challenge with an incredible sense of speed.
Adventure 2 is at times more challenging than SA 1, but also a blast to play especially when you get better at it.

What can I say about Sonic Adventure 2 that hasn't already been said? If you didn't own a Sega Genesis, there's a good chance that, until Sonic Frontiers came out, this was your first Sonic game. I know it was mine. That being said, I didn't own it until recently so I think I don't have any nostalgia blindness for it. This was probably the most bang for your buck you could get out of a lot of platformers back then. Six playable characters across three campaigns, tons of side missions to try, a surprisingly robust multiplayer, and a whole game of raising animals that in all honesty is better than the main game in a lot of ways.
It tried something different with the story at the time, and while it didn't succeed in some ways, it also was doing more than Mario was at the time. While I think I prefer Sonic Adventure 1's aesthetic and laid back nature, I can't deny that this is probably the most important Sonic game. Not the best Sonic game and incredibly flawed and hinted at Sonic's wasting illness that he would develop in the 2000s, but still a fun diversion. This game was the end of one era and the beginning of another. What a way to go out and enter at the same time.

We bought this game when I was little, I was so into sonic. Before doing the story mode my brother and I tried the multiplayer. We accidently picked characters without looking and I didn't end up playing as sonic. I cried for like an hour.
One time my brother released his first chao ever on acident while playing around with the big game boy thing. We both cried all day.

I have never been so conflicted about a game before. I know this is a long review nobody wants to read, so you can skip to the end if you want.
The rouge and knuckles levels are physically painful.
The tails and Eggman levels are WAY TOO LONG and consist of pressing forward and spamming the shooting button.
And boss battles are terrible, it's either the flying robot thing OR a 1v1 that doesn't work. Not to mention, I never figured out how to beat the camera.
SA2 has so much bullshit, and I don't think the problem comes from it aging poorly, in fact, SA2 is way ahead of its time.
Just like Unleashed, the only good part, which is the sonic and shadow stages, consists of about 10% of playtime. Not to mention, crazy gadget served as inspiration for eggmanland.
And yet... I can't help but love this game:
-City escape
-Metal harbor
-White jungle
THIS is what 3d sonic SHOULD BE. The sense of freedom and speed these stages give me makes me stop and wonder... The formula for 3d Sonic was right here.
What I meant in the beginning is: Is this game good?
No
Do I like it
Yes
Please don't mess with us Sonic fans, we don't even like our games
