This game has had me by the balls from the first few minutes, the banter and the dialogue is great and is no one going to talk about the flying bed storyline. It's so well put together and genuinely one of the best cases of environmental storytelling ive seen in a Dragon Quest game. This so far is one of my favorite Dragon Quest games. So much to love.
While I didn't understand the mechanics too much, I had so much fun with this one. It felt like an even more grand adventure than the first 2!! A much better flow with the story progression, didn't feel as aimless as 2. especially with the newly added map :')
Also adding in boomerangs and whips and all the new spells made combat infinitely better.
It was just a step above in every way.
Also I faught for my life at the end but it was a freakin awesome boss rush, shoutout to the sages stone

Honestly, very short and sweet. The story was simple and I think it does a good job of leading you through the world with a clear mission.
As long as you have a world map pulled up on any version where you don't have access to one, you should be okay.
Random encounters are never fun, but what can you do, it's an 80s jrpg. I had fun though, the atmosphere and music were great and the npcs were funny. There's something so baller about being the one guy with sick ass armour, on a mission to get the ball of light and save the princess. Like it sounds so generic, but it created THE blueprint and it's the ONE to do it right.

I played the snes version so I think what makes this tough is having no map, it makes exploration much more tedious. It still has great atmosphere, it's still very soulful and fun. Probably unplayable without save states, fast forward, and a guide for most people though. Overall, it was a necessary step towards what we have now with Dragon Quest. I enjoyed my time even though I was wandering around aimlessly for a while.
Hope we one day get a version with party chat.
