Games I finished in 2023 (Ranked)

Happy new year everybody! 2024 will be an... interesting year, to put it politely, but as 2023 has now ended, I felt like making a ranking of every game that I played this year. Hopefully this year I'll finish even more games and be able to pump out more reviews, but eh, whatever happens will happen.

This was fucking awesome to play. DMC3 had me hooked immediately, for everytime I got my ass beat in DMC3, I wanted to go back immediately and get better and better. I'm still trying to get better at this game, even after finishing it back in June 2023 and going for all the SS Ranks on all difficulties (only done that on Normal and Hard mode, wish me luck). The combat system, amazing soundtrack, overall strong bosses with a few exceptions, great weapons and variety, the introduction of styles, etc. all make DMC3 one of the greatest times I've had playing a game. However, most of the enemies are really dogshit and a few of bosses, particularly Arkham are pretty bad. Either way though, great game and still a really fun time I had. Will be coming back to this one for awhile.
DMC5 is great and is the most consistent game in the series. However, I wouldn't call it the best. While the combat is really fun with Dante and Nero, V is really mid, thankfully he's only mandatory for a few missions. The game feels a lot floatier than 3 and 4, thus comboing I don't think is as fun as it is in those games. Also the level design revolves around a lot of walking around and not much more. However, the game makes up for all of that with easily the best enemies in the series, some of the best bosses in the series, Dante and Nero having fun additions and enhancements from their previous versions, and an overall good and fun story. When I finished this game, I felt really happy that I got to play these games and experience this franchise after years of curiosity. My criticisms are more minor in the grand scheme of things and doesn't distract from the fact this game rocks.
This is one of the most consistent and creative Mario games that I've played. The level design and controls are strong as usual in 2D Mario, but Wonder does more that makes it truly one of my favorite Mario games. The unique power-ups, fun gimmicks, and overall creativity make it one of the most enjoyable and consistently fun Mario games I've played. Some of the badges are kinda eh and while the bosses do shake things up from previous 2D games, I do wish we had more than just Bowser Jr. for the castle bosses. However, those are more on the nitpicks side than legitimate problems for me, this game is very fun and I highly recommend it.
A fantastic fangame that I'd argue is up there with some of the best official games in the series. The controls feel very good and tight, not to mention some very good level design. One of my issues that I remember having with this game was that I didn't like how small the spaces for the Omega Metroids are considering how big they are and how much damage they do. Other than that though? Very good game and one of my favorite Metroids.

This was a very interesting experience and unlike anything I played before, Pikmin is a very relaxing and pleasant experience. The world designs, fantastic atmosphere, and strategy gameplay all make it a very enjoyable experience.
DMC4 I initially thought was a very up and down experience that was saved by the extremely well made combat system. How do I feel now? Well, to be honest, after replaying it more and more on some of the higher difficulties, yeah some of the games problems like the garbage gimmicks and annoying enemies are still there and even worsened in difficulties like DMD or LDK, but I'm starting to enjoy 4 the more I go back to it. I enjoyed it casually, but trying to get better at it made me appreciate some of this games tech in a way that I wouldn't have before. Don't get me wrong though, this game is technically half-finished and needs a lot of ironing out in the level design and enemy department, but I enjoy 4 for what it is.
It's good clean fun, but not much more than that. It's not like there's major issues holding this game back, it just doesn't do enough to push the envelope.
Better late than never I guess. I plan on making a review of this game eventually to fully explain my opinions, but in the meantime, I like Sonic Frontiers. It's not the dumpster fire many were expecting before it came out, nor is it the peak raw kino people made it out to be when it was initially released. Frontiers is enjoyable mostly in the open zone areas that make for some enjoyable platforming and exploration. The soundtrack I think is good, with my favorite pieces actually being the island tracks, boss themes also kick ass. However, the combat isn't very fun to use and comes across feeling very clunky and a lot of the moves either feeling the same with a few differences or require no effort to execute whatsoever. Cyberspace is pretty mid, but the levels do get better as you progress through the game. Overall, I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Frontiers, my faith in Sonic Team has risen, but they clearly need to step it up and polish the games more if this is what they produce 5 years after Forces came out.
DMC1 is good, but at the same time it doesn't really click with me the same way future games like 3, 5, or even 4 to an extent do. DMC1 is the first of its kind, so there’s bound to be issues that looking back people might see it as dated or clunky. 1's combat and weapons are pretty good, the atmosphere, soundtrack, and bosses are also good for the most part, with a few exceptions for the bosses like Nightmare or Mundus. However, the camera, platforming, and lock-on are issues that make it difficult for me to rank DMC1 much higher. Despite this though, it's still a game that has aged better than expected, at least in my opinion. Would recommend you try this out, though I'd recommend playing some of the other games before playing this one to get a better overall feel for what's going on here.
I spent my spring break playing THIS?!
