I famously dislike visual novels despite my extensive history with them.
This one isn't that fiercely written nor designed next to the others here but it does a surprising amount with very, very little. It achieves and says more than some visual novels literally twenty times its lenght. It all lands with impressive gravitas despite its short nature.
I do have qualms with the weirdly moe art style but it's all high quality so you can't really complain that much?
I've read 50+ of these fuckers and this is the only one I still like enough to include in here.
Because visual novels killed my grandma, okay?
(Fun fact: the main developer of this game once told me that I have done more advertising for this game than he did.)

Including this despite slightly mixed opinions on it. I do think there's a lot of depth here that people miss, it's just that I sometimes wish that it were more brutal or daring with the way that it tells its comedically opaque story.
The use of giant, BOLD text, the loud effects, atmospheric soundscapes, and especially some of those cutscenes haunt me in my sleep. The game does feel like you're staring down a rabbit hole, but I suppose I just wanted a little more in some way...?
(I need to replay the Silent Hill games, I hardly remember any but the second one and even that one is kinda foggy.
Get it?)

Like Undertale, it falls a little into meaninglessly meta antics when it comes to its narrative, but its bag of tricks is deeper and more confusing, in a good way.
There's a lot to look into here, and that's something that I really like in these things. Its more whimsical but impactful moments left me genuinely surprised even if I wanted a little more out of the philosophy and purpose of these escapades.

Ok please stop that.
Okay so he didn't die after this which is a little funny given how this game is but he really deserves it.
FUCK
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Take care and see you soon.
This one isn't even all that writing wise but I'm not going to lie and pretend that last thing didn't hit me like a napalm.
Please do not make more of these.
PLEASE do not make more of these.
It very seriously pains me to put an anime girl gambling simulator on this list and forfeiting any miniscule amount of credence I had otherwise but I find it difficult to deny how many times this game has stopped me from downing an entire bottle of Tsingtao [1] and hurling myself out the closest window.

Dude.
This game's greatest sin is the fact that they included "punk" on the title simply because it's the brand that the game exists under.
I am well aware that this one is contentious but I am consistently impressed at the amount of people that completely miss the surprisingly hauntological portrayal of these tired tropes. It's one of the more human games I've played, and there's genuinely surprising subtlety behind it.
Worth noting that this game is personally resonant with me due to cultural reasons and thus I am disgustingly biased, but I still feel people overlook this one's more interesting traits. There is an all-consuming emptiness behind its bold yet immature language and surprising meaning behind its more video-gamey flaws.
(One time I saw somebody list the fact that the protagonist doesn't set out to change the world and is just agonizingly wandering through it as a narrative flaw. Wow.)

So I'm not far into this one but I anticipate it's going on the little podium thing because never have I been so quickly and continously fucked with.
(When I said I wanted an abstract "more" out of Signalis this is pretty much what I meant.)

It doesn't really feel like I left.
ONE DAY
I WILL RETURN TO YOUR SIDE
I WILL RETURN TO YOUR SIDE
I find myself in a constant state of confusion that the general gaming sphere isn't losing their collective fucking minds over this. Yes I know it's been praised a lot. I don't think it's enough.
What? Seriously.
What? Seriously.
