British Gaming

Suggestions welcome. Entries must (loosely) conform to the horrible little terms described in my Jelly Boy review https://www.backloggd.com/u/letshugbro/review/188574/

(List will no doubt be handicapped by the IGDB database having barely any Spectrum games)

Overlord, or, as it's pronounced in the game, "Ovahlawd"

oh, and, even though I really like it, I must begrudgingly admit that "theme 'ospital" is very much Bri'ish Gaming

Finally, a use for my weird knowledge of obscure outside of the UK computer games.

Superfrog, Skool Daze, Cannon Fodder, Sensible Soccer (Mostly just cuz who outside of england calls stuff sensible), Theme Park (Basically the same thing as theme hospital), How To Be A Complete Bastard, Little Britain the Game, Rock Star Ate My Hamster, Viz: The Game (Both Viz the comic and the game are possibly the most agressively bri'ish thing ever made), Don't Buy This (The idea of releasing a bunch of shitty games people send you as a joke feels bri'ish to me)

Other weird thing you notice about these games, especially in the Amiga era, is that a lot of them have random sponsorships in them. Zool has Chupa Chups, James Pond 2 has Penguin, Superfrog has whatever the fuck Lucozade is, and Theme Park is sponsored by fucking Midland Bank of all things. iirc theres two amiga games that were sponsored by some cheese curl chip thing but I cant for the life of me remember what the fuck either were called

Iunno how much it counts, but VVVVVV is an homage to a lot of those ZX Spectrum games for what its worth

Let's see here ... Carmageddon, Lemmings ... I know you could put literally every Rare game on here but Battletoads especially ... there's also one I think pretty obscure PC game I played as a kid that stuck with me, "Mystic Towers" which has all the hallmarks (isometric perspective, hideous character design, plodding gameplay, casually crude "humor") but was actually made by Australians. If you're counting games that certainly FEEL British, that's a good one.

gta london 1969 came to mind but I've not touched that mission pack so someone else would have to confirm

the GTA games are very strong candidates

Any Molyneux game would fit, but Black and White (specifically, the first one) is so inherently, stinkingly Bri'ish that you can almost taste the vinegar and dark ales

Starship Titanic, definitely, but that's written by Douglas Adams and starring the voices of two Monty Pythons so that kind of feels like cheating

whatever it takes to create the perfect list

Unfortunately I I grew up on PS2 where Speccy/Amiga-era game design was disappearing (see GTA1/2 compared to 3). But Team Soho/London Studio has been shut down so in remembrance I suggest The Getaway, Gangs of London, Blood & Truth. RIP to the only game studio who attempted Guy Ritchie gaming.
