i mean youre not wrong but i was moreso making a point i feel like sonic adventure is unfairly treated as a broken glitchy mess when really its just an early 3D platformer, which was a fairly janky genre during its debut. its not like after mario 64 3D platformers were all amazing and free of jank.
tbh i think SA could've avoided a lot of its technical issues
but i also dont really care, because adventure is a much more structurally ambitious game than mario 64, so like, it was inevitable
i imagine trying to preserve sonic's 2d design elements in 3d on top of making enough content to justify retail price was a challenge
mario 64's kino but it's also playing to a much more basic game ruleset than sonic, and collectathon levels generally take less time to design than linear ones
also sonic's ost is like, six times larger, among many other things

i feel attacked and i'm not really sure why
"by the time of Adventure true 3D platformers have existed for years"
2 of them?
2 of them?
taaalk, fucking based
oh come now there were at least ten notable ones by late 98
How many of them were good
Better than Sonic Adventure? Uh five off the top of my head and that's not counting three Crash Bandicoots that I will definitely not go to bat for personally but I'm sure others would
i fucking hate sonic adventure
More than five now that I think about it: Jumping Flash 1 & 2, Tomb Raider 1 & 2, Mario, Banjo-Kazooie, Spyro. I think that's probably it
Mario 64, Crash and Spyro are good, yea
Calling tomb raider a platformer is giving me brain damage
Jumping flash looks good, never played it before, but it's also like, very tank-like in contrast to other 3d platformers, from what i've seen

To be fair Mario 64 was one of the first platformers in a 3D environment. By the time of Sonic Adventure, moving in 3D space was less impressive.
It doesn't help most people play the DX Director's Cut port today, which adds a significant amount of bugs & jank to the SA1. The PC version on Steam can thankfully be patched and remove many of DX's shortcomings, but most won't bother.

YEAH, MARIO DESERVES THE HATE. K**L THAT BASTARD
Walk against an edge in Mario 64 then do it in Sonic Adventure
I completely forgot to reply to this and I'm doing so a year late but wrt the 3d platformers listed
As said yeah Tomb Raider really shouldn't count. I haven't played Jumping Flash but I agree it just looks way too different to take design cues from.
I also have issues listing Crash due to the completely different design philosophy that series has. Sonic Adventure would be an infinitely worse game if all its levels looked like that lol. And on that note Crash 3 literally came out in 1998 so if I activate the ultra pedant in me, that's not "for years" at all, it's a contemporary
Banjo and Spyro literally only came out a few months before SA.
I get this argument from the gamer's pov since they'll have played all these before SA but realistically there wasn't much for the devs to go off of. Adventure tries really hard to take cues from the 2D sonics and that just wouldnt work with like... Jumping Flash at all. When I think "true 3d platformer that came out years before Sonic Adventure" its basically just Mario 64 and maybe Crash

thanks
Any time
Spitting. Hilarious to see people complaining about the glitches in SA1 being "gamebreaking" when you can beat 64 in 4 minutes by going "Yahoo-Yah-Ya-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-" on a few doors
