Doesn't quite capture what made the original PS2 game so special but also doesn't do enough to distinguish itself from other releases. Still, Persona 3 is a fantastic game and I really enjoyed Reload even if I wanted a bit more from a remake.

this game is big. really really big. despite that, it never felt bloated and I found the pacing of the story overall to be much better than in 7. the sheer amount of stuff to do is wonderful, though it does result in the game forcing many long, unskippable tutorials on the various side activities and this became very frustrating over time, though these were mostly concentrated in the first half of the game.

the game's story is also "big". perhaps too big for its own good, as the game has many different plot threads at work, and while I enjoyed most of these threads individually, I don't think it all tied together all that well. yakuza 4 and 5 were like this as well though I vastly enjoyed this game's narrative more than those games. it's a gripping story that I liked overall but I also feel that there was a lot of missed or wasted potential, particularly with what was set up in 7 and gaiden.

the RPG gameplay is a massive improvement over 7 though. i absolutely hated the combat and rpg mechanics in yakuza like a dragon but I had a lot more fun in this one. its still a bit shallow and there are a couple difficulty spikes and slumps but it's a big step in the right direction.

good game. shoutouts to yutaka yamai

those 200 potions mean the world to me

13 years later it's still the greatest to ever do it

Mr. Evrart is helping me find my gun.

tama save me... save me tama...

the zappiest fire emblem game. the holy broccoly-est, if you will.

lengthy dungeons, handholdy boss fights, general lack of difficulty, flawed story etc etc, this is a damn addicting game and the amount of polish and heart that went into it is undeniable

side content is noticeably undercooked but everything else is incredible

a good yakuza story even if it has some pacing issues
but by god it is not a good turn-based rpg. i hope 8 improves the combat because it is so poorly designed in this one

overhated but i still think it's one of the weaker entries
i like the okinawa parts more than the rest of the story

C route is the highlight
this game's great when it's doing original things for the series, which unfortunately isn't often. still fun

"that won't be necessary" is what they should've told falcom when they thought of making this game
