(REVIEW PURELY FOR THE PORT, NOT THE GAMES THEMSELVES)
I was willing to look past the problems with the HD collection (effects are worse compared to the originals and you can't tab out of DMC1 and DMC2 unless you want the game to crash, only can go up to 1080p resolution, locked at 60 FPS) until tonight where I lost 17 hours of playtime on a Dante save file because I accidentally overwrite it with a vergil save file. I am so unbelievably livid because I had almost maxed out all of Dante's styles, weapons, health, Devil Trigger, etc and was getting ready to play through on Dante Must Die. This is another lazy pc port by Capcom and while the games run fine, it just screams lazy and unoptimized when the effects are somehow worse than the PS2 originals and the save file system in DMC3 is somehow still not fixed to allow the characters to not overwrite each other's save data.

You get two great games and Devil May Cry 2!
Although Devil May Cry 2 is the black sheep of the series i still find the game somewhat enjoyable in a odd way. The game has a small handful of good boss designs but the lack of story and satisfying combat really drags it down.
Devil May Cry 3 though makes up for all of that and redeemed the series to legendary status for the hack and slash genre.

DMC - great start to the series. A bit janky but that’s due to its age. Had some of Dante’s most iconic lines - 3.5 just because of its jankiness
DMC2 - very dissapointing. The only enjoyment I got from it was laughing at how bad it is. But I do get some enjoyment out of it so I can’t rate it the lowest - 1.5
DMC3 - one of my favourite games of all time. The story is so silly but that’s what I love about it. Wacky woohoo pizza man all the way. Spent hours playing it and never got bored - 5/5

DMC 1
Listen, there's so much I love about this one specifically, mainly in terms of visual aesthetic and presentation. You can still clearly see the discarded skin of Resident Evil all over this, but the unique elements of it's own presentation are way more appealing too me (the weird compressed model images for items and the little animations for when you select weapons are adorable, Dante being more stoic except for the points where he needs to crack a joke, movement that is somehow both tanky and fluid) and this is about as stripped down and simple as DMC plots will ever be.
I wouldn't necessarily call the game "punishing" in terms of difficulty, but it's very easy to screw up and ruin an entire level. That in addition too limited lives (which I never am a fan of, give me a harder difficulty but infinite tries a la Hotline Miami and I'm good) makes it harder for me to dive through it. Playing this and DMC 4 parallel really makes me appreciate how polished, accessible and just damn good DMC 5 is more and more. I do hope to finish this though; 3 may be harder and I don't give a rat's ass about beating 2.

Devil May Cry is kind of an anti-reddish game the more I think about it lol. The games are difficult and encourage thinking outside the box, with a high skill ceiling to boot. These are things in video games that always intimidate me, and yet somehow, I love this series.
The fun attitude and characterization of Dante, the absolutely UNHINGED cutscenes in DMC3, or the blood pumping, head banging tunes present in all three games. The satisfaction of beating a boss or mission you were stuck on, or pulling off an S combat rank. The immaculate, gothic vibes of DMC1. The somewhat cheesy, but endearing and heartfelt stories of DMC1 and 3.
The thing that all of these have in common is that they are what make me LOVE this franchise. I wanted to write some longass review on why this series is great, but- what is there to say that hasn't been said? It's Devil May Cry. Play it, you won't regret it. I have to give a lot of thanks to Josh_The_Fourth for even giving me interest in these games, it was really worth checking out after all.
oh and this collection also has dmc2 but lol who cares

A solid package of the first three Devil May Cry games, but very much just polished ports with very little in the way of remastering or improvements. Indeed, a lot of graphical elements (mainly in 1) are completely broken, and pre-rendered cutscenes remain in their horribly pixelated, low-res glory.
Most importantly though, the games run well, and play excellently. This is especially useful if you were in Europe and were cursed with the horrendous PAL conversion of DMC1 on the PS2 - gone is the letterboxing and reduced game speed, just smooth 60FPS action.
Of course, the contents aren't all great. The gallery is nice, 1 is dated but remains playable, and 3 is just fantastic. But then there's 2, a despicable heap of garbage that is best avoided, it adds nothing of value to the franchise.
It's also maybe a little overpriced considering this, so it's best grabbed on a sale, but there's a lot of fun to be had in this package.

Much like the Ratchet & Clank collection, these are perfectly playable ways to play these games... but they are fuck ugly.
Lighting is weird, effects are ruined, and dark areas have this awful screen burn effect that's applied when you enter that area, and starts warping as you move around (really noticeable in Mission 8 of DMC3).
This could be a me problem for all I know, I can't find anyone else with this problem, but it's worth noting (maybe it's better on non-PS3 releases).
(edit: been grinding the DMC3 trophies and holy shit, nvm, this is actually bad. There's a recurring audio syncing issue that I have no idea how it's triggered, the audio is just delayed sometimes and the game keeps crashing; I legit just beat Arkham on DMD Mode and the game FUCKING CRASHED AND I HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN FUCK OFF! Again, these are probably PS3 specific problems, but it's worth noting. Don't get this shit on PS3)

I loved the first game in spite of it's age and weirdness. I didn't play the DMC games when they came out, so no nostalgia here. I just really like it and think it's a good game.
4/5
DMC2 is one of the most boring pieces of garbage i've ever played in my entire life, like, holy shit it's kind of amazing how bad it is. I'm sad i wasted time of my life playing it, time i'll never get back. 0.5/5
I played a little bit of DMC3 but i was burned out and stopped, but even from the start i can tell it's like a million times better than DMC2. I will give a rating once return to finish it.

really good. played DMC 1 and had a blast, started DMC 3 shortly after but dropped it midway. i'll definitely come back to finish it sometime, just not right now. DMC 2 does not exist and i will not tolerate so called "FREE THINKERS" asking "but bro, what about DMC 2?". IT DOES NOT EXIST. HOURS OF GAMEPLAY DREAMED UP BY THE UTTERLY DERANGED.
Devil May Cry - Fun and a good start to the series. Very revolutionary at the time although today It has some frustrating moments due to mechanics that have aged horribly.
Devil May Cry 2.
Devil May Cry 3 - Incredibly fun gameplay with a surprisingly good story. It pretty much defined what the rest of this series became.
