Pick Pac-Land when playing Smash with friends!!! The looks on their faces will be epic!!!!!

Was there ever any value to this game's existence? This is a genuine question I have over this game. Did Super Smash Brothers for the Wii U truly have to exist in this world?

Take away the competitive aspect that all fighting games have and what you're left with what is the most corporate and soulless Super Smash Bros. game in fucking existence.

Sure, you could argue the series has always been this corporatized, actively milked cash cow that has done nothing but drain Masahiro Sakurai and his team of the back half of their lives, but this one to me takes the fucking cake.

The Classic Mode is this bland, move your trophy around the board with no thematic reasoning or purpose behind it. Take on the new Master Hand forms that are just generic shadow monsters ending with this sole tiny core that isn't even satisfying to beat up because it feels like a representation of the creators' giving up.

What about Smash Tour, the most boring and pointless sidemode addition ever, that barely makes any fucking sense and the end result winds up feeling hollow. Even then, that's if anyone wants to play the damn thing.

The artstyle is the worst of it for me, it's just this hollow lifeless standardized HD crap that just feels so flat and awful.

I'll admit, I grew up with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it's still my favorite of the series even now. Sure it had that overly realistic artstyle where Mario wears denim, and characters slip and slide everywhere but it also had a fucking soul. You could tell the developers wanted to make Brawl the best it could be. I never felt that with 4.

Smash 4 is just the stepping stone to Ultimate that didn't need to be, because regardless of the quality of that game, given the sheer level of content it has it already eclipses Smash 4 several times and then some. Where was the Adventure Mode for Smash 4? We've had an adventure mode in Smash games since fucking Melee in 2001, why didn't Smash 4 have one?

Why does everything in Smash 4 feel like the developers didn't want to make the game?

Outside of that on a more personal level I fucking hate this game. It's my least favorite game yes for those reasons above but how it affected my life in highschool is why I sold the game off and will likely never play it again.

Friends of mine so much more entrenched into the Competitive Scene than I was constantly wound up fighting among each other, within our school gore would be sent due to disputes over the game, friendships were ruined and shit, it was all fucking stupid but at the time it was utter misery that I wouldn't want in my life ever again. It ruined fighting games for me, permanently.

It killed any interest I could have had in that genre by showing me the absolute most toxic direction that playing those games could go.

Smash 4 is the video game equivalent to gonorrhea, because once you have it flushed out of your system, you never want to experience it ever again.

Between the two versions this one was my least favorite but I still had a lot of fun with it. 8 player Smash is a bit limited in this one, but its a cool new feature exclusive to this version. Smash Tour is another exclusive mode to Wii U. It obviously isn't as good as Smash Run but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get at least some enjoyment out of playing it. Also RIP Ice Climbers, I wish they were able to be included in this entry of Smash.

A solid but slow smash bros game game play wise, however there is a severe lack of single player content and other features. its a fun game but sometimes feels like the worst of both worlds between brawl and ultimate.

Guh... mmmmngh ghhhhhhh... oh fuck...

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is... oh god... ohhhhhh...... such a soulful video game. Everything it... gnnnnn... includes is just pure artistry, Sakurai is simply perfect ungaaaaaaaahhhhhh... insert additional Sakurai Dickriding here

I love playing Smash Tour, such a great game mode. I love spending a half hour alone playing a game mode where I don't understand how it works and the game just kind of ends and stuff.

Oh and Classic Mode, fuck I'm ejaculating like I'm Shiki Tohno. Such an amazing breath of fresh air. I love moving my piece across a board with absolutely no rhyme or reason to anything that I'm doing, no theming or anything interesting whatsoever while I get to the Master Forms and cream at the thought of beating the little Master Core at the end that totally doesn't feel like the team who worked on this game's lack of a will to live.

I absolutely love the lack of any adventure mode after the Subspace Emissary. Not having any form of interesting singleplayer content is my fucking jam. Fuck singleplayer content, Singleplayer content should die in a ditch. Spitting noise

Most of all I'm so glad the Smash 4 community is such a safe and accepting community, especially for children, and that absolutely ZeRo people who got popular from this community turned out to be sexual predators.

All in all, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is simply the greatest game of all time, and if you don't agree well you simply hate Sakurai and want him to not survive the cold winters. You know Masahiro Sakurai really only has as much influence as a janitor, and Masahiro Sakurai cannot make any bad games.

Anyways check the date.

This is probably my least favorite smash game. The gameplay is okay, but the engine doesn't feel nearly as fun as Melee or Ultimate's. The visuals feel super generic too, and a lot of the renders feel lifeless compared to the other games. I do like the game a bit, and it's pretty fun with mods. But compared to the other games I feel like it'll be forgotten pretty easily

Whoever designed the Rage mechanic in this game has felt no comfort or love from another human being

the memoriessss, played this shit so fucking much w my cousin neighbor n sister, we had been going back to it randomly the past couple years until we lost the disc, just nice memories to look back at c:

this is without exaggeration or contest one of the worst games that has ever come out in the past decade and it's not even close

Whereas Brawl had outstanding single player content that makes it worth coming back to, there is no reason to play Smash 4 at all since Ultimate exists. It's single player content never really appealed to me and I never played it all that much.

I also think this game has the most forgettable newcomers in the series to date. It does add more third party characters, who really do stand out, but I just found it really hard to get excited for pretty much any of the new additions from Nintendo's camp. None of them were bad inclusions, I just didn't really get excited for any of them outside of Little Mac (only because I loved Punch-Out on the Wii so much. The hype evaporated when he turned out to be one of the worst characters in the game.)

For its time, it was fun, but the gameplay felt on the bland side. After playing Ultimate, I could never come back to this.

The only Smash game in existence actually not worth playing anymore. It's not because it's, like... particularly bad or anything? There's just absolutely no reason to play Smash 4, a game that essentially amounts to being a longer-than-usual tech demo for Smash Ultimate. There is absolutely nothing about this game you can't get a better version of in Ultimate. Ultimate is just the definitive version of this game and then some (more characters, more stages, better mechanics, a less contrived and uninspired single-player mode). Every single other previous Smash game has something worth revisiting or experiencing. Smash 64 is a clunky and antiquated curio that shows off the series' humble roots. Melee is a buggy and exciting disasterpiece whose strange and off-kilter mechanics help make up for the overall lack of content, and on the complete and total flip side, Brawl has so much content that it helps make up for the overall lack of competitive mechanical intrigue.

Smash 4 has... uh... Smash Tour, I guess??????

I love playing neutral! Proceeds to shield

Very fun but no real reason to go back to it now that Ultimate exists and is more accessible. Extra modes aren't great compared to the 3DS version

This game was enough to justify my purchase of a Wii U.
Too bad I didn't have any friends...

brawl 2 brought a lot of new concepts to the tables like less combos less humor more characters. have i mentioned more characters. there are a lot of characters you know. if you like a character it's in here. they even have goku there's a lot of characters. not sure why no one played it after brawl 2:reloaded came out. all the die hard fans must have just gone underground. there's a lot of characters.

Sakurai adding Bayonetta to kill the games comp scene is such a power move

Good in the sense that Smash is good, but probably the weakest game in the series. Yes I think Brawl is better than this.

8-player HD Smash was incredible. But this is the most empty-feeling Smash game in terms of features. Every predecessor to Ultimate has reasons to revisit it, except this one. Still a great game in a vacuum, but nothing about it really stands out anymore.

We are still trying to catch all of the pedophiles who got popular from playing Smash 4.

You know, this game really must be awful considering the sheer amount of evil it put into the world.

But we, the FBI, will stop them, just like how we stopped YourDadReviews.

We're watching you Backloggd, keep that in mind.

if you play this or 3ds over literally any other release in the series you're probably an escaped convict

Smash for Wii U is a fine game that brought me tons of great memories and introduced some of my favorite characters to the series (Little Mac!), but stands as the only Smash game that I have no reason to ever revisit.

Keep in mind I'm rating in retrospect, but I've put hundreds of hours into this game and loved it. This may be an unfair metric to rate with, since Ultimate was just a blip on the radar at the time, but time hasn't been too kind to Smash 4 since Smash Ultimate improves on everything established by this game tenfold. The single player options are not exceptionally good and the game doesn't have a particularly distinct game feel or atmosphere either - draining Smash of some of its unique identity that was so great in the games prior, but I digress. The replay value is nonexistent.

The moveset design shows its age a bit too. Smash 4 relied very heavily on creating gimmicky characters to keep the roster fresh, but in the process created some occasionally clunky or outright broken characters (...Little Mac). The best designs were probably the third party characters, Mega Man and Pac-Man are exceptional and it's hard to imagine Smash without them. Definitely an experimental period for character design that would eventually lead to Ultimate's more polished approach that has created some of the most fun characters in the series.

So in short, I guess Smash 4 is kind of just a stepping stone that leads us from Brawl to Ultimate. It doesn't do much to distinguish itself beyond that, but it was a fun game at the time and the improvements from Brawl to Smash 4 have been valuable ones. And I mean... it's Smash Bros.

It has some holes, but is altogether a very cohesive project. Smash has proven to be one of gaming pillars for how consistent it remains, even under the immense pressures the gaming industry puts on its workers. The mechanics are always on point, the stages are always creative, and the roster is deep and layered. Nothing is wasted, and everything is used to its full potential. It makes you wish other games would be more consistent. Although, sometimes some modes of the game turned out half baked, it still soars above most games.

Honestly, had the potential to be the second best Super Smash Bros game, but it lacks any compelling side modes to top Brawl.

alas, this game was my breaking point for this series. Like brawl, I got REALLY swept up in the hype cycle, and I was so excited to play this when it was announced. I followed every character announcement and direct all the way to launch, where I proceeded to play the everloving shit out of it. I also wanted to be more competitive so I started like really grinding this game both online and offline, and really all I was doing was just burning myself out at an insane rate. This game series slowly stopped becoming the special highlight of get togethers and started becoming exhausting. I can't look back at this game in a positive light like I can for all the previous smash games before it because of that. Plus, smash games before this were unique enough from one another that there's enough reason to keep all the previous games around, whereas for this game, now that ultimates out, who the hell is still trying to play this? The game is solid, but like I'm still burnt out on this series and I have this game (and myself) to blame.

i was so happy the animal crossing villager became a fighter in this one :)

bad gamefeel, the videogame

Unsurprisingly, this is the best Smash IV version thanks to the Wii U hardware power versus the 3DS version. This is yet another entry that offers the typical Nintendo fan service fest with a myriad of characters and stages that cover Nintendo's history. Online play and net code were better than the 3DS version but still provided certain lag and hiccups here and there.

This is also the game responsible for unleashing amiibo mania.

That Bayonetta mirror match EVO finals is actually the best thing to come out of this game because it made ppl want to drop this game as soon as Ultimate came out and there wasnt any major community retention for it, not a single soul thought "Actually you know what? I think i'll stick with the Sm4sh scene and not make the jump to Ultimate".
