Super game. The story centers around one of The Dark Descent's most compelling references. And it manages to keep its mystery until the last quarter of the game. The fear factor is quite enough, yes, it's not as dark as Dark Descent, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. The only problem with the game is that the techniques it uses to tell its wonderful story are no longer sufficient for today. If this game had been released in 2010, no one would object, but I expected more effective presentations from Frictional Games, especially after a masterpiece like SOMA. Good story, mystery and suspense lovers should not miss this special game and patiently read the notes in the game. Unfortunately, it is difficult to reach the taste of the game without reading them.
Frictional, larguem o mercado de horror. Façam um reboot de Myst.

Pregnant woman horror
I found the game very beautiful but with a very unbearable and irritating story.

Terror de mulher grávida
Achei o jogo muito bonito mas com uma história muito insuportável e irritante.

way better than a Machine for Pigs since this one have actual difficult monster encounters, scarier atmosphere and good puzzles.
gameplay-wise Rebirth returns to the series's roots with Inventory management and Sanity system with only minor changes with the addition of Matches which replaces Tinderboxes from the previous game. by returning to the series's roots the game is overall more interesting to play as opposed to the Walking-sim approach that AMFP did
presentation is also great, good enviroments and art-direction not to mention the sound-design.
in terms of the main campaign, I think the game really shined through on the first few sections especially the ones you need to traverse an old Desert Fort, after it the game kinda falls flat since most of the reminder of the journey is set on an alternate world with not much interesting puzzles or engaging storylines.
the story is a bit confusing and falls flat later on, Tasi is a great main protagonist for the game and making her fully voiced was a right move IMO, the voice-acting is superb but overall the narrative is a bit difficult to follow nevertheless.
overall a big improvement over a Machine for Pigs but still feels a weak game compared to the Dark Descent, by far my favorite in this series.

To me Amnesia franchise incarnates the story of sin and repentance. Every game (Bunker excluded..) features a protagonist who's done something terrible that lead to awful consequences and then forgot all about it. And now it's their one and only job to carry on through the horror mostly caused by their previous actions, and atone for past sins.
Dark Descent blazed this idea into the franchise and Machine for Pigs managed to interprete it in a more chambered and narrative oriented railed story.
And Rebirth, unfortunately, utterly fails at delivering the same level of self-awareness and payback within the plot.
No matter which ending you get, you're left with this stale aftertaste in your mouth and it's not because Tasi (the protagonist) deserved being eternally punished for her actions. But simply due to Empress's (the antagonist) whim of turning her and her crew into ghouls/harvesters. It ruins all the built-up tension you've experienced throughout the story and nullifies it till the point where you don't feel any satisfaction and time's wasted on a pointless story.
From a narrative pov, in my opinion, though Rebirth tries to broaden the lore and elaborate on terms and events mentioned in Dark Descent, picking an "advanced civilization" from a parallel universe just seems lazy. Besides, there're too many subplots to catch up with (unlike Dark Descent that knew exactly when to stop) and considering how plot's fed to you in the form of notes (and flashbacks on a rare basis), it becomes a problem to figure everything out without consulting with Amnesia Wiki and whatnot. Machine for Pigs suffered with the same delivery disfunction though at least it didn't have as much things to keep in mind at the same time.
Rebirth took several steps forward technically but, unfortunately, backed down on the plot. And in the franchise that emphasises immersiveness over gameplay ("don't play Amnesia to win") it's fatal.

A good few hours too long with two enemy types that don't land at all really set this up for abject failure on the horror front. But I can't say it was all disappointing because of the third omnipresent "enemy" which anchors this game in both nostalgia and quality to Amnesia The Dark Descent. Everything good about what's here is in part due to the groundwork done in that first Amnesia game - with some obvious assets from Soma and lessons learned in the writing it comes across as a more personal story which tries to attach you to events through your Amnesia to, at times, greater success than any other Amnesia (particularly A Machine for Pigs.) Too much emphasis on your passenger gives the game away on what's going on with the protagonist Tasi. Other aspects like her experience with loss and recalling what happened to her and her companions is very strong and I felt for her along the way in those moments. While at times the more personal story is told in awkward dream sequences, for the most part it did well enough to keep me going - some loading screens are better than hours of onscreen story. So while I wasn't as concerned as Tasi in the present the source of her Amnesia kept me somewhat intrigued till the end about her past.
Technically, I started this game in 2020. Played ~5.5hrs, got a little over half way, and stopped on 08 Nov 2020.
And I see why I stopped! God, I hate this game lmao. My least favorite of the amnesia games I've played. That being said, it isn't bad. There are puzzles I enjoyed and areas I liked exploring. But wow. Darkness in this game is oppressive, and the number of large, pitch black rooms they throw you into with zero direction.... evil. Also the sanity mechanic is annoying more than anything in this game, as well as the insanely limited light sources you are given. I appreciated that it added to the survival horror feelings, but it become cumbersome and annoying.
Also... what was even the point of laudanum? I don't think I ever used one or even picked one up after the start of the game. How did health even work? Why is button mashing what determines if you die or not if you get caught?
Just so many weird choices. I also didn't jive with the themes of this game. I just don't think it worked. At all.
Wish I had just watched a playthrough instead of picking this game back up three years later lol
