This is almost the same game that you may or may not have played on the Nintendo 64, but portable. Being able to play this wherever and whenever you wanted was very smart, and working with Rare again to get this released was surprising to see.
With all that said, this is a somewhat lesser version of the original, and it is thanks to the controls. The Nintendo DS does not have any analogue stick, which makes controlling 3D games much harder than before. Now, if this game was like Mario Kart where you only drive a kart around a course it wouldn't be an issue, but flying the plane, and looking around the hub world felt much more cumbersome to do here than in the original.
Other than that, some of the characters and voices were changed for various reasons which always felt off to me since I was so used to the original, but I can understand why the changes were made. This is still a good game throughout, and I almost always have fun with it.

I had a fun time with this game. I really enjoy the overworld aspect of the game as well as the different playable characters. I also liked how it introduced the different flying and water mechanics before Mario Kart did, and it really helps change up the track variety. The races are also actually difficult, especially the boss fights.
While the original game is obviously better from looking at reviews and letsplays, this is the game I was given and it's the game I played as a kid. The controls are odd, the racing itself is fine, and everything else is the same. Holding it to the same standards as the N64 game it still does everything that made that game amazing in this game with such a fun hub world and a type of atmosphere that's hard to achieve in other games. Diddy Kong Racing as a whole (I include DS in this) is the only other racing game that can properly rival Mario Kart, and it's a shame it hasn't had a much more proper remake that really brings this wonderful world to life with better controls and more QoL.
I have an unreal amount of nostalgia for this game, I won it at this auction we did at the gifted and talented program in elementary school, and I played it all the time by myself and with my friends and family using DS download play. This is genuinely probably one of my favorite DS games ever made just for that alone. And the soundtrack sounds better in this one too honestly
While I personally think the original game is better, this is a solid remake. The new balloon-popping minigame makes good use of the stylus and is surprisingly good. The game also uses the stylus as a way of getting that head start boost at the beginning of each race. While it is certainly a creative way of utilizing the stylus, it can be a minor annoyance at times. While it sucks Banjo & Conker couldn't come back due to legal reasons, Dixie & Tiny aren't terrible replacements and the extra characters this remake adds do make up for it. The ability to create your own tracks is an impressive feature other racing games should but haven't utilized. The custom track designs are a bit bland and probably could have been better, but its still impressive that they were able to pull it off. The last addition are the new tracks. While I certainly can appreciate that they took the time to add them, they're a bit bland and not nearly as memorable as the tracks in the original. I don't like it as much as the N64 version but I'd be lying if I said that they didn't put any care into this remake. It is a great way for those who didn't originally get the chance to play the original to experience this classic.
